of those who have arrived <***> For in one place the land of the unburied barbarians has produced a crop of corpses more than of trees, and in another the sea, troubled and covered over by the mass of remains, is reddened with the blood of foreigners; and now it is properly called the Red [Sea], well dyed with the dye of the barbarians. For it was necessary, I think, for it, seeing the second Pharaoh and you as the new Moses, to represent the scenes of the Red Sea; and now the waves hold as tombs a watery memory and an Egyptian burial; for it was not fitting to see the new punishment as inferior to the old. Let us therefore sing the hymn, not by booming arrhythmically on timbrels, but from the instruments within us mystically tuned; and let us stretch our living strings, and our tongues as plectra, and our lips as cymbals, and with the five-stringed composition of our senses let us sound the highest note for the first. For thus the sight of the eyes cleanses every harmful vision; and again the intelligible gate of hearing will not open its doors to disorderly sounds, nor again may a seasoning of bitter pleasure snatch away a deceived sense of smell, and taste will not be a cause of corruption, but prepared for incorruptible food, and with a touch free from fleeting gains let us handle the Christ-brotherly members, so that the architect of all being, the all-powerful support of things seen and unseen, the firm foundation, who guides nature for its benefit and frightens away the childish disorder of the passions with chastening teachers, may now array his fire-gleaming allies against the dark barbarians, and show the Tigris and the Istrian channel bloodied as the stream of the Nile was before, so that the barbarian mind, having unfortunately tasted it, might be made drunk with the blood of its kin, and may he increase your pious planting, the master flourishing with divine branches; and may he open doors for many words of his conquering the barbarians everywhere. Here now the conclusion of my purpose marks the end of my slow-tongued discourse; but for your son, the younger power, I prepare to address these words: Appear as victory; now it is possible for you to take this bridegroom, to whom you have already given the slaughter of the barbarians as wedding gifts.
