15.3 And when this command was read by me in the presence of him and the holy empress and their son the emperor, and them alone, finally he decreed to his son: My son, you have heard what I command concerning my own people who serve me; for it was written: my chamberlains, who have served me well and are well-disposed and servile, as is fitting, toward me, let them have from all of you, my sons, love and support and providence according to what is proportionate to each one.
15.4 And again I say to you privately concerning this Sphrantzes, that he 15.4 has served me well and ministered to me in matters of my soul and body; and now in my illness he ministers to me more than the others; I am confident that he will also manage well the affairs for my soul after death. Therefore, his youth and my old age left no opportunity for anything to be done for him worthy of his love and service. 15.5 Since with the despot lord Constantine I had a love and confidence, which God accepted, because my father's brother was his tutor, and his sons were his foster-brothers and friends and servants, and I with them; then time brought about my intimacy with his blessed and ever-memorable father, and the things he needed from him, many and necessary things, he found them through me, and he loved to have me especially in his service.
15.6 And it being the custom and order in the emperors' households, that the father's chamberlains should enter the chambers of his sons, but not the sons' into the father's, and this while the father is among the living, but not after death, when his blessed and ever-memorable father died, after his first memorial service, all of us, his chamberlains, having returned to the palace (for this is also the custom, that the emperor's chamberlains remain by his tomb until the first memorial service), I went also to the house where the said despot lord Constantine was staying, and I sat outside like the many.

Ἡ νεότης οὖν αὐτοῦ καὶ τὸ γῆρας τὸ ἐμὸν οὐδὲν ἀφῆκαν, ἵνα τι γένηται πρὸς αὐτὸν ἀντάξιον τῆς ἀγάπης καὶ δουλοσύ νης αὐτοῦ. Ἀφίημι δὲ αὐτὸν εἰς σὲ καὶ νὰ ἔχῃς τὴν εὐχήν μου, τὸ ἐτύ χενεν ἵνα γένηται παρ' ἐμοῦ καὶ οὐδὲν ἐγένετο, δι' ἃς αἰτίας εἶπον, ἄς γένηται παρὰ σοῦ. 15.5 Ἐπεὶ δὲ μετὰ τοῦ δεσπότου κυροῦ Κωνσταντίνου εἶχον ἀγάπην καὶ πληροφορίαν, ἣν ὁ θεὸς ἀπεδέχετο, ὅτι ὁ τοῦ πατρός μου ἀδελφὸς ἦν αὐτοῦ τατᾶς καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ συνανάτροφοι καὶ φίλοι καὶ δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐγὼ μετ' αὐτῶν· εἶτα ἔφερεν ὁ καιρὸς καὶ οἰκείωσιν ἐμοῦ εἰς τὸν μακαρίτην καὶ ἀοίδιμον πατέρα αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ ἔχρηζεν ἀπ' ἐκεῖνον, πολλὰ καὶ ἀναγκαῖα, εὕρισκεν αὐτὰ δι' ἐμοῦ, ἠγάπα καὶ τὸ νά με εἶχε καὶ ἰδίως εἰς τὴν δουλοσύνην του. 15.6 Καὶ συνηθείας καὶ τάξεως οὔσης εἰς τὰ τῶν βασιλέων ὁσπήτια, ὅτι τοῦ πατρὸς οἱ κελλιῶται νὰ χωρῶσι καὶ εἰς τὰ κελλία τῶν υἱῶν αὐ τοῦ, οὐχὶ δὲ τῶν υἱῶν εἰς τὸ τοῦ πατρός, τοῦτο δὲ ἕως ἂν ἐν τοῖς ζῶσιν ὁ πατὴρ εὑρίσκεται, οὐχὶ δὲ καὶ μετὰ θάνατον, ὡς ἀπέθανεν ὁ μακαρίτης καὶ ἀοίδιμος πατὴρ αὐτοῦ, μετὰ τὸ ἐκείνου πρῶτον μνημόσυ νον ἐπιστρέψαντες πάντες ἡμεῖς οἱ ἐκείνου κελλιῶται εἰς τὸ παλάτιν, ἔθος γὰρ ἔνι καὶ τοῦτο, ὅτι οἱ κελλιῶται αὐτοῦ δὴ τοῦ βασιλέως νὰ καταμένωσι περὶ τὸν τάφον αὐτοῦ μέχρι καὶ τοῦ πρώτου μνημοσύνου, ἀπῆλθον καὶ εἰς τὸ ὁσπήτιον, ὅπερ κατέμεινεν ὁ ῥηθεὶς δεσπότης κὺρ Κωνσταντῖνος καὶ ἐκάθισα ἔξω ὡς οἱ πολλοί. 15.7 Μαθὼν δὲ τοῦτο ἔστειλε τὸν θῖόν μου καὶ ὥρισέ μοι, ὅτι σὺ μὲν ἐτήρησας τὴν τάξιν καὶ οὐδὲν ἦλθες εἰς τὸ κελλίον μου ἐξ ὀρθοῦ, ὡς ἐποίεις ζῶντος τοῦ αὐθεντός μου τοῦ βασιλέως τοῦ πατρός μου· ἀμὴ πάλιν ἡμεῖς διὰ τὸ χρέος τῆς εἰς ἐκεῖνον ἀγάπης σου καὶ δουλοσύνης καὶ τῆς εἰς ἡμᾶς εὐεργετοῦμέν σοι καὶ οὕτως, ὡσὰν ᾗ εἰς τὴν δουλο
