expecting? And many other such things. Let us not then discuss such things, nor let us endure others discussing them; but let us consider what we must do, or what we must say, to please God. Again, it is possible to be silent for God's sake, being insulted, being reviled, suffering countless evils, if you bear it nobly, and utter no blasphemous word against the one doing these things. Not only to praise and to blame, nor to remain inside and to go out, nor to speak and to be silent, but it is also possible to weep and to be sad, and to be pleased and to rejoice for the glory of God. For when you see either a brother sinning, or yourself fallen into transgression, then you groan and are sad, you have gained from this sadness a salvation that brings no regret, just as Paul says: For godly sorrow produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret. If you see another prospering, and then you do not envy, but give thanks to God as for your own good things, to Him who made your brother glorious, you have received a great reward for this joy.

εʹ. What then, tell me, could be more pitiful than the envious, when it is possible both

to rejoice and to gain through that joy, they themselves choose rather to be sad at the successes of others, and with that sadness to draw upon themselves punishment from God, and unbearable chastisement? And why must one speak of praises, and blames, and sorrows, and joys, when indeed even from the smallest and most trivial of things it is possible to reap the greatest fruits, if we do them for God's sake? For what is more trivial than getting a haircut? But it is possible to do even this for God's sake. For when you do not arrange your hair, nor beautify your appearance, nor adorn yourself as a bait and deceit for those who see you, but simply and as it happens and only as much as necessity requires, you have done this for God's sake, and you will surely have your reward, because you have chastised an evil desire, and cut off an unseasonable ambition. For if he who gives only a cup of cold water for God's sake will inherit the kingdom of heaven, consider how great a reward he who does all things for God's sake will enjoy. It is possible also to walk for God's sake, and to look for God's sake. How is it possible to look for God's sake, and to walk? When you do not run toward wickedness, when you are not curious about the beauty of others, when upon seeing a woman approaching, you restrain your eye, you wall in your sight with the fear of God, you have done this for God's sake; when we put on not expensive things, which make us softer, but only those things that are able to cover us. It is possible to extend this law even to our footwear. For many have slipped into this foolishness and debauchery, so as to beautify their shoes, and to adorn them on all sides, no less than others do their faces; which is a sign of an unclean and corrupted soul. For even if it seems to be a small thing, yet this would be a sign and proof of great ruin, both in men and in women. It is possible, therefore, to use even footwear for God's sake, when we everywhere seek what is necessary, and make this the measure of our enjoyment. And that it is possible to glorify God both through walking and through dress, hear what a certain wise man says: A man's attire, and the laughter of his teeth, and the gait of his foot, declare what he is. For when we appear composed [and grave], and full of gravity, and displaying much soberness from every side; even from a mere encounter, the unbeliever, and the dissolute, and the boisterous will marvel at seeing such a person, even if he be the most insensitive of all. And if we take a wife, let us do this for God's sake, that we may be sober-minded, not that we may make our substance more abundant; that we may seek nobility of soul, not abundance of money, nor prominence of ancestors, but virtue and gentleness of manners; let us take a fellow-traveler of life, not a partner in trade. And why must I list everything? For it is possible for us henceforth from what has been said to examine each of the things that are done and acted, and to do all things for God's sake.

προσδοκήσας; καὶ πολλὰ ἕτερα τοιαῦτα. Μὴ δὴ τὰ τοιαῦτα διαλεγώμεθα, μηδὲ ἑτέρων διαλεγόντων ἀνεχώμεθα· ἀλλὰ σκοπῶμεν τί ποιοῦντας, ἢ τί λέγοντας ἔστιν ἀρέσαι Θεῷ. Πάλιν ἔστι σιγῆσαι διὰ τὸν Θεὸν, ὑβριζόμενος, λοιδορούμενος, μυρία πάσχων κακὰ, ἂν φέρῃς γενναίως, καὶ μηδὲν ῥῆμα βλάσφημον ἐξενέγκῃς εἰς τὸν ταῦτα ποιοῦντα. Οὐκ ἐπαινέσαι δὲ καὶ ψέξαι μόνον, οὐδὲ ἔνδον μεῖναι καὶ ἐξελθεῖν, οὐδὲ φθέγξασθαι καὶ σιγῆσαι, ἀλλὰ καὶ κλαῦσαι καὶ λυπηθῆναι, καὶ ἡσθῆναι καὶ εὐφρανθῆναι ἔστιν εἰς δόξαν Θεοῦ. Ὅταν γὰρ ἴδῃς ἢ ἀδελφὸν ἁμαρτάνοντα, ἢ σαυτὸν παραπτώματι περιπεσόντα, εἶτα στενάξῃς καὶ λυπηθῇς, ἐκέρδανας ἀπὸ τῆς λύπης σωτηρίαν ἀμεταμέλητον, καθάπερ ὁ Παῦλός φησιν· Ἡ γὰρ κατὰ Θεὸν λύπη σωτηρίαν ἀμεταμέλητον κατεργάζεται. Ἂν ἴδῃς εὐδοκιμοῦντα ἕτερον, εἶτα μὴ βασκήνῃς, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐπὶ οἰκείοις ἀγαθοῖς εὐχαριστήσῃς τῷ Θεῷ, τῷ ποιήσαντι λαμπρόν σου τὸν ἀδελφὸν, καὶ τῆς χαρᾶς ταύτης πολὺν ἔλαβες τὸν μισθόν.

εʹ. Τί γένοιτ' ἂν οὖν, εἰπέ μοι, τῶν βασκάνων ἐλεεινότερον, ὅταν ἐξὸν καὶ

χαίρειν καὶ κερδαίνειν διὰ τὴν χαρὰν, αὐτοὶ καὶ λυπεῖσθαι αἱρῶνται μᾶλλον ἐπὶ ταῖς τῶν ἑτέρων εὐδοκιμήσεσι, καὶ μετὰ τῆς λύπης ἔτι καὶ κόλασιν ἐπισπᾶσθαι παρὰ τοῦ Θεοῦ, καὶ τιμωρίαν ἀφόρητον; Καὶ τί χρὴ λέγειν ἐπαίνους, καὶ ψόγους, καὶ λύπας, καὶ χαρὰς, ὅπου γε καὶ ἀπὸ τῶν μικροτάτων αὐτῶν καὶ εὐτελεστάτων πραγμάτων τὰ μέγιστ' ἔστι καρπώσασθαι, ἂν διὰ τὸν Θεὸν αὐτὰ ποιῶμεν; Τί γὰρ τοῦ κείρασθαι εὐτελέστερον; Ἀλλ' ἔστι καὶ τοῦτο ποιῆσαι διὰ τὸν Θεόν. Ὅταν γὰρ μὴ τὴν κόμην διαθῇς, μηδὲ καλλωπίσῃς τὴν ὄψιν, μηδὲ πρὸς δέλεαρ καὶ ἀπάτην τῶν ὁρώντων σαυτὸν κατακοσμήσῃς, ἀλλ' ἁπλῶς καὶ ὡς ἔτυχε καὶ ὅσον ἡ χρεία ἀπαιτεῖ μόνον, διὰ τὸν Θεὸν τοῦτο ἐποίησας, καὶ πάντως ἕξεις τὸν μισθὸν, ὅτι ἐπιθυμίαν ἐκόλασας πονηρὰν, καὶ φιλοτιμίαν ἄκαιρον ἐνέκοψας. Εἰ γὰρ ὁ ποτήριον μόνον ψυχροῦ δοὺς διὰ τὸν Θεὸν, βασιλείαν οὐρανῶν κληρονομήσει, ὁ πάντα ποιῶν διὰ τὸν Θεὸν ἐννόησον πόσης ἀπολαύσεται τῆς ἀμοιβῆς. Ἔστι καὶ βαδίζειν διὰ τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ βλέπειν διὰ τὸν Θεόν. Πῶς ἔστι βλέπειν διὰ τὸν Θεὸν, καὶ βαδίζειν; Ὅταν μὴ πρὸς πονηρίαν τρέχῃς, ὅταν μὴ περιεργάζῃ τὰ ἀλλότρια κάλλη, ὅταν ἰδὼν γυναῖκα ἀπαντῶσαν, χαλινώσῃς τὸν ὀφθαλμὸν, τειχίσῃς τὴν ὄψιν τῷ τοῦ Θεοῦ φόβῳ, διὰ τὸν Θεὸν τοῦτ' ἐποίησας· ὅταν τὰ μὴ πολυτελῆ, καὶ μαλακωτέρους ἡμᾶς ποιοῦντα, ἀλλὰ τὰ δυνάμενα ἡμᾶς σκέπειν, ταῦτα περιβαλλώμεθα μόνον. Ἔστι καὶ μέχρις ὑποδημάτων τοῦτον ἐξαγαγεῖν τὸν νόμον. Καὶ γὰρ πολλοὶ πρὸς τοῦτο βλακείας καὶ ἀσωτίας ἐξώλισθον, ὡς καὶ τὰ ὑποδήματα καλλωπίζειν, καὶ πάντοθεν αὐτὰ ποικίλλειν, οὐχ ἧττον ἢ τὰς ὄψεις ἕτεροι· ὅπερ ψυχῆς ἐστιν ἀκαθάρτου καὶ διεφθαρμένης. Εἰ γὰρ καὶ αὐτὸ μικρὸν εἶναι δοκεῖ, ἀλλὰ μεγάλης ἐξωλείας δεῖγμα καὶ ἔλεγχος ἂν εἴη τοῦτο, καὶ ἐπ' ἀνδρῶν καὶ ἐπὶ γυναικῶν. Ἔξεστι τοίνυν καὶ ὑποδήμασι χρῆσθαι διὰ τὸν Θεὸν, ὅταν πανταχοῦ τὴν χρείαν ἐπιζητῶμεν, καὶ τοῦτο μέτρον τῆς ἀπολαύσεως ποιώμεθα. Καὶ ὅτι καὶ διὰ βαδίσεως καὶ διὰ στολῆς ἔστι τὸν Θεὸν δοξάσαι, ἄκουσον τί φησι σοφός τις ἀνήρ· Στολισμὸς ἀνδρὸς, καὶ γέλως ὀδόντων, καὶ βῆμα ποδὸς ἀναγγέλλει τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ. Ὅταν γὰρ κατεσταλμένοι [καὶ σεμνοὶ], καὶ σεμνότητος γέμοντες, καὶ πολλὴν πανταχόθεν ἐπιδεικνύμενοι τὴν σωφροσύνην φαινώμεθα· καὶ ἀπὸ ψιλῆς τῆς συντυχίας καὶ ὁ ἄπιστος, καὶ ὁ ἀκόλαστος, καὶ ὁ θορυβώδης τὸν τοιοῦτον ἰδὼν θαυμάσεται, κἂν ἁπάντων ἀναισθητότερος ᾖ. Κἂν γυναῖκα ἀγώμεθα, διὰ τὸν Θεὸν τοῦτο ποιῶμεν, ἵνα σωφρονῶμεν, οὐχ ἵνα τὴν οὐσίαν εὐπορωτέραν ἐργαζώμεθα, ἵνα ψυχῆς εὐγένειαν ἐπιζητῶμεν, μὴ χρημάτων περιουσίαν, μηδὲ προγόνων περιφάνειαν, ἀλλὰ τρόπων ἀρετὴν καὶ ἐπιείκειαν· συνέμπορον τοῦ βίου λαμβάνωμεν, οὐχὶ καπηλείας κοινωνόν. Καὶ τί δεῖ πάντα καταλέγειν; Ἔξεστι γὰρ λοιπὸν ἡμῖν ἐκ τῶν εἰρημένων ἕκαστον ἐφοδεύειν τῶν γινομένων καὶ πραττομένων, καὶ πάντα διὰ τὸν Θεὸν ποιεῖν.
