He showed the cross, by which He led the thief, in the person of Adam, into paradise.

For since the Greeks did not believe, nor the Jews, nor the children of heretics, that God begot without flux and without passion, for this reason today, having come forth from a passible body, He kept the passible body impassible, that He might show that just as being born of the Virgin He did not destroy her virginity, so also God, the holy substance remaining without flux and 56.394 unchangeable, as God begot God in a manner befitting God. For since men, having forsaken Him, carved man-shaped idols, which they also worshipped to the insult of the Creator, for this reason today the Word of God, being God, was seen in the form of a man, that He might both destroy the falsehood and secretly bring worship to Himself. To this Christ, therefore, who made a way out of difficulties, let us send up glory with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and forever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
