to them; but he made Isaac the heir of his substance, and died. The names of the sons of Ishmael are inserted here; and he dwelt from Havilah to Shur. When Rebecca was barren, Isaac prayed to God, that she might conceive; and when she conceived, God said to her: Two nations are in your womb, and one people shall be stronger than the other people; foretelling the things concerning the Jews and us Christians. And when the children were born and grew up, 56.321 Esau gives up and sells his own birthright to Jacob for a pottage of lentils. And when Isaac wanted to go down to Egypt, since a famine prevailed, God prevented him, advising him to remain where he dwelt, and promising to be with him, and to bless his seed and multiply it. And Abimelech, king of Gerar, having learned that Rebecca was Isaac's wife (for he had suspected that she was his sister), decreed death if anyone should insult her. Then Isaac sowed, and found a hundredfold of barley. And as he came into great wealth from the blessing of God, the Philistines envied him, and Abimelech drove him from there. But he did not defend himself, but withdrew, and dug wells, and they fought over them. But he did not resist, but dug others, until they ceased. And God blessed him. And when Abimelech came to him, Isaac received him gladly and feasted him, not remembering the wrongs he had suffered. Esau took Canaanite wives, and they were a grief to Rebecca. Isaac grew old and his eyes were dim, and he commanded his son Esau to hunt and make him a savory meal, that he might bless him. But Jacob, with his mother cooperating with him, came before Esau; for having cooked two kids, and having put their skins on him, to conceal the smoothness of the boy, she gave the savory food into his hands, and sent him in. And he, having entered, received the blessings. But Esau, having come, and learned what had happened, cried out and wept, and asked to be blessed himself also, and he obtained it by persistence, though not as much as he had hoped; nevertheless he obtained it. Having then been blessed with small things instead of great, he was angry with his brother, held a grudge, and waited for his father's death, so that he might then plot against him more fearlessly. His mother reported these things to Jacob, and advised him to find safety in flight; and saying to Isaac that her life would be unlivable if Jacob also took a wife from the Canaanites, she arranged for Isaac to send Jacob to Mesopotamia to her brother Laban, and to take a wife from his daughters. And when Jacob had departed, Esau took the daughter of Ishmael as a wife for himself. And Ishmael was the son of Abraham, born to him from Hagar. Jacob sees the ladder, sets up a pillar, and promises to give a tenth of his possessions to God, if he should return in health. He comes to Mesopotamia, saw Rachel, and loved her; the girl went and told her father Laban. He himself came and recognized Jacob, and brought him to himself. He served him for the wages of his daughter; but he gave the elder. And when Jacob was displeased with the deceit, he proposed that he serve another seven years, if he wished to take the younger also. And he endured this also, and took the younger also. Now the elder was weak in the eyes, Leah; but the younger was beautiful, Rachel. And they are types, the 56.322 elder of the synagogue of the Jews, and the younger of the Church of Christ. Leah conceived, and bore Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah. But Rachel, since she did not bear children, gave Jacob a second wife, her handmaid Bilhah, and she bore Dan and Naphtali. And Leah also gave Zilpah her handmaid to Jacob as a wife; and she bore Gad and Asher. And next, after these things, Leah bore Issachar and Zebulun. Then Rachel also bore Joseph. And when Jacob wanted to depart to his own land, Laban gave him the wage which Jacob himself had determined, every dark-colored one among the lambs, and every white one among the goats; but since the many
