he dogmatizes, reviling all creation and the one who made it. But not in the same way as these did he introduce three principles, but one principle and one God, who is highest and unnameable, and that this one made another. And this one, he says, who came into being, being found wicked, made the world by his own depravity. 45 Severians. A certain Severus, again following Apelles, rejects wine, and mythologizes that the vine grew from the serpent-like Satan and the earth, when they came together with one another. And he rejects woman, saying that she belongs to the left-hand power. And he produces certain names of rulers and apocryphal books. And similarly to the others, he rejects the resurrection of the flesh and the Old Testament. 46 Tatianists. This Tatian flourished with Justin the most holy martyr and philosopher, but after the death of the holy Justin, he was corrupted by the doctrines of Marcion and dogmatized things equal to him, adding other things besides him. It was said that he came from Mesopotamia. These are the chapters of the three tomes of the first book concerning the forty-six heresies. -Recapitulation of the second book, fourth tome, in which there are 18 heresies. 47 Encratites, who being a splinter group of Tatian reject marriage, saying that it is of Satan, and prohibiting all eating of animate things. 48 The Cataphrygians and Montanists and Ascodrugites, who accept the Old and New Testament, but introduce other prophets, boasting in a certain Montanus and Priscilla. 49 Pepuzians, also called Quintillians, to whom the Artotyrites are joined, two heresies. They are from the Cataphrygians themselves, but they dogmatize other things besides them, deifying Pepuza, a certain deserted city between Galatia and Cappadocia and Phrygia and indeed considering it to be Jerusalem—and there is another Pepuza—and they give to women the right to rule and to be priests. And they initiate someone by piercing a young child with bronze needles, just like the Cataphrygians, and having mixed flour with his blood and made bread, they partake of it as an offering. And indeed they mythologize that Christ was revealed there in Pepuza to Quintilla or Priscilla in the form of a female. They likewise use the Old and New Testament, changing it according to their own understanding. 50 Quartodecimans. These celebrate the Passover on one day of the year, on whatever day the fourteenth of the moon might fall, whether on a Sabbath or on a Lord's day, and they celebrate that day by fasting and also keeping a vigil. 51 Alogi, so called by us, who reject the Gospel according to John and his Revelation because they do not accept the one who came from the Father being always God the Word. 52 Adamites, from a certain Adam living, so called, have their doctrine more from mockery than from truth. And it is something like this: Men and women gather together naked, as from their mother, and thus they perform the readings and the prayers and whatever else, supposedly being both solitaries and celibates and not accepting marriage, they consider their own church to be paradise. 53 Sampsaeans and Elkesaites, still to this day inhabiting the Arabia situated above the Dead Sea; who being deceived by a certain false prophet Elxai, whose female relatives Marthous and Marthina, worshipped by the heresy as goddesses, still existed to this day, having all things similarly to the Ebionites.
