He transferred Moses and Elijah on the mountain, and so great the transfiguration became, a bright cloud overshadowing and the Father's voice thundering? For what reason? Because the apostles thought the Lord Christ was a mere man, and not God in the flesh. Therefore, thinking him to be a simple man because of the tears of the economy and the figurative cowardice and the prayers and the yielding, the apostles often both contradicted and disbelieved and were astonished. In order, then, to cut them off from such a suspicion, having led them up on the mountain and slightly opened the door of the incarnation, he showed clearly how much glory was hidden in him. Furthermore, he also fully assured the apostles that he is the Lord of things in heaven and on earth and under the earth. From above he snared Elijah, and from below he hooked Moses, and from those on earth he presented Peter and James and John; for from the extremes the whole is known. Therefore Peter, seeing so great a glory, and Moses and Elijah standing by as servants and quietly murmuring, no longer rebukes, but worships and entreats, saying, as you just heard: Lord, it is good for us to be here and not to go up to Jerusalem. There Pilate and Caiaphas breathe death, here Moses and Elijah announce resurrection. Lord, it is good for us to be here; and if you wish, let us make three tabernacles, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah. But, O blessed Peter, why, being possessed by fear and shaken by cowardice, do you hasten to weave unfitting tents with pliant branches, ranking the Lord with the servants? He whom a cloud attends as a bodyguard, a hut cannot contain. For heaven and earth are full of his glory, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Ἐκεῖ Πιλᾶτος καὶ Καϊάφας θάνατον πνέοντες, ἐνταῦθα Μωϋσῆς καὶ Ἡλίας ἀνάστασιν μηνύοντες. Κύριε, καλόν ἐστιν ἡμᾶς ὧδε εἶναι· καὶ εἰ θέλεις, ποιήσωμεν τρεῖς σκηνάς, μίαν σοὶ καὶ Μωϋσῇ μίαν καὶ Ἡλίᾳ μίαν. Ἀλλ' ὦ μακάριε Πέτρε, τί τῷ φόβῳ κατεχόμενος καὶ τῇ δειλίᾳ κλονούμενος, ἀλλοκτίστους σκηνὰς λυγιδοπλεκτεῖν ἐπείγει, τὸν δεσπότην τοῖς δούλοις συντάττων; Ὃν νεφέλη δορυφορεῖ, τοῦτον καλύβη χωρῆσαι οὐ δύναται. Πλήρης γὰρ ὁ οὐρανὸς καὶ ἡ γῆ τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ, τοῦ πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
