of men leading to eternal life, it is not possible for their paths to be understood. Therefore, of the glorious kings of the earth or even rulers, no work alien to piety is left behind after death. For their glory has been extinguished. And they are not known, he says, not even the ways of a man in youth, inflamed with desires on account of the instability of his ways; and of the adulteress, likewise on account of shamelessness. Or this is the Church of the nations, which after being washed through baptism says it has done nothing wrong. But the righteous man is not in youth, since, being perfected in a short time, he fulfilled long years. Such is also every adulterous woman, or she who has alienated herself from the bridegroom, and a soul that has left her husband, and goes after her lovers. And it marches out from one command in an orderly way. So the locust is also praised as orderly, obeying the command of the word of God. Such is the Church, because it is despised by men, compared to a locust with respect to living on earth; but because it is gathered with Jesus and does not scatter, but puts on the whole armor of God, that it may stand against the schemes of the devil, encamping in an orderly way from one command; and it is without a king under Pharaoh, but not under God, and the labors of the Egyptians are handed over to it. Perhaps because we are not ruled before the kingdom of Christ, the locust is without a king. For they do not have a leader, as bees do, but each leads itself. These are they who by choice are lightened of earthly things, traveling an ordered life. Or also locusts, as many as, wishing to fly with their mind, being unable, run up a little from the earth. And if they should partake of the practical, they will be brought into one practical order. And a goat leading a flock of goats. Third, the goat according to the Seventy only, leading a flock of goats, both increasing and multiplying it and guiding it to pastures on high. For no herd of animals so climbs the heights. Such is the leader of Christ, leading those in the flock of goats to the height. In another way the goat typifies Christ, being offered for sin. This one being on high, the whole multitude of the pious follows.
