But he who reads the prophetic words with care and attention, experiencing from the reading itself a trace of divine inspiration, will be persuaded by what he experiences that what we believe to be the words of God are not the compositions of men. And the light inherent in the law of Moses, hidden away under a veil, shone forth at the coming of Jesus, when the veil was removed, and the good things, of which the letter was a shadow, came gradually to be known. 1.7 It would be a great task now to recount the most ancient prophecies concerning each of the future events, so that through them the one who doubts, being struck as by divine inspiration, laying aside all double-mindedness and distraction, might give himself with his whole soul to the words of God. But if the superhuman quality of the thoughts does not seem to the unlearned to be evident in every letter, it is not at all surprising; for also in the works of the providence that touches the whole world, some things appear most clearly to be works of providence, while others are so hidden that they seem to provide room for disbelief concerning the God who governs all things with ineffable skill and power. For the rational evidence of a provider's art is not so clear in things on earth as it is in the sun and moon and stars; and it is not so manifest in the accidents of human affairs as it is in the souls and bodies of animals, where the 'to what end' and 'for what purpose' is very much discovered by those who study these things, concerning the instincts and perceptions and natures of animals, and the structures of their bodies. But just as providence is not discredited by the things that are not known, at least by those who have once rightly accepted it; so neither is the divinity of Scripture, which extends through all of it, discredited because our weakness is not able in every phrase to perceive the hidden splendor of the doctrines, stored away in humble and despised language. For we have this treasure in earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of the power of God may shine forth, and not be thought to be from us men. For if the well-trodden ways of proofs among men, laid up in books, had prevailed over men, our faith would reasonably have been supposed to rest in the wisdom of men, and not in the power of God; but now it is clear to one who lifts up his eyes, that the word and the preaching has prevailed among the many not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power. Wherefore, since a heavenly, or even super-heavenly, power strikes us to worship only the one who created us, let us try, leaving the word of the beginning of Christ,
