unspeakable joy. Blessed is he who has acquired you, because he will count the treasures of the world as nothing, for you are truly the inexhaustible wealth. Blessed and thrice-blessed also is he whom you have received; for in visible dishonor he will be more glorious than all the glorious and more honored and revered than all the honored. Praiseworthy is he who pursues you, more praiseworthy is he who has found you, more blessed is he who is loved by you, who is received by you, who is taught by you, who has dwelt in you, who is fed through you with the food, Christ the immortal, Christ our God.
O divine love, where do you contain Christ? Where do you hide Him? Why, having taken the Savior of the world, have you gone far from us? Open for us unworthy ones your little door, so that we too may see Christ who suffered for us and may believe in His mercy, that we shall no longer die, from the moment we behold Him. Open to us, you who became a door for Him for His appearance in the flesh, you who compelled the unstinting and uncompelled compassion of our Master to bear the sins and sicknesses of all, (25) and do not reject us, saying: "I do not know you". Be with us, so that you may know us; for we happen to be unknown to you. Dwell in us, so that through you the Master, coming, may visit us humble ones, being met beforehand by you—for we are entirely unworthy—, that He might remain a little while speaking with you and receive us sinners also, to fall at His immaculate feet, and that you might speak good things on our behalf and intercede for the debt of our evil deeds to be forgiven us, so that we might again be deemed worthy through you to serve the Master Himself and be cared for and nourished by Him; for to owe nothing, but to be perishing from the famine of poverty, is nearly the cause of equal punishment and torment.
May we be forgiven by you, holy love, and through you may we come to enjoy the good things of our Master, whose sweetness no one will taste, except through you. For he who has not loved you as he ought and has not been loved by you as is right, runs perhaps, but has not yet attained; and everyone running, before finishing the race, is uncertain. But he who has attained you or been attained by you, is completely secure, since you are the end of the law, you who surround me, you who inflame me and from pain of heart enkindle in me an infinite longing for God and for my brothers and fathers. For you are the teacher of the prophets, the companion of the apostles, the power of the martyrs, the inspiration of the fathers and teachers, the perfection of all the saints and my own appointment now to the present ministry.
(26) But forgive me, brothers, for having been slightly carried away from the catechetical discourse, the longing of love having done this. For I remembered her and "my heart was gladdened" according to the divine David, and I turned to a hymn of her wonders. Therefore I ask your love also to pursue her, with all your strength, and running with faith to attain her, and you will in no way miss your hopes. For all zeal and all ascetic practice with many labors that does not arrive at love in a contrite spirit, is vain and ends in nothing useful. For neither in any other virtue nor even in the fulfillment of a command of the Lord can one be known as a disciple of Christ; "For by this," He says, "all will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another". For her sake the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, for whose sake having become man, He willingly endured all the life-giving passions, in order to free His own creation, man, from the bonds of Hades and taking him up, to lead him up to the heavens. For her sake the apostles ran that unceasing race and the whole
