they were profaning the sabbath. Therefore, as if blaspheming against him, they were saying the "This man is not from God." But others, even in part coming to their senses, were contending against them, saying that these things were done by a divine power and not by the agency of sinners, and they had their own opinion divided. 80Jo 9, 17 Being divided from one another, they again inquire of the blind man. But he, speaking boldly, no longer calls him simply a man, but a prophet. 81Jo 9, 18-19 The Pharisees came to such shamelessness as not to believe even the one who had regained his sight, that he was formerly blind, even though his neighbors and those who knew him said this. until they sent for his parents and asked them, if this is their son, who they say was born blind. 82Jo 9, 22 For wickedness had so mastered the rulers that they not only harmed themselves through unbelief, but now also were closing the way of salvation to the rest through threats. 83Jo 9, 24-25 Because of excessive wickedness, the Jews called the righteous man a sinner. But the one who had regained his sight not only clearly confessed the grace of the Lord's good deed, but also, for the refutation of their impiety, he said the "One thing I know, that being blind, he made me see." 85Jo 9, 26 They were asking continuously, not so that, being amazed, they would desist from impiety, but so that they might fight more against what was being said. 86Jo 9, 27 Knowing that they wished to fight, he answered them thus. 87 Jo 9, 28 As if reviling him greatly, they called him a disciple of the Lord, and themselves of Moses, not as honoring him, but as opposing the teaching of the Lord. 88 Jo 9, 29 Speaking without judgment and not knowing that he himself was the one who had spoken to Moses, they say things contrary to themselves, now saying, "we do not know where this man is from," and at another time having said, "we know where this man is from." But when the Christ comes, it says, no one knows where he is from. 89 Jo 9, 30 Refuting them as ungrateful, he says, that one ought not, on account of your ignorance, to set aside his power, but it is necessary to bring forward his favor for the refutation of your unbelief. 90Jo 9, 31 So that he might not seem, by his silence, to agree with those who call him a sinner, he shows that through the good deeds he did for him, he is God-fearing; for the good pleasure of God which occurred concerning my healing is a sign of the piety of the one who was heard. 91Jo 9, 32 For though these holy men and prophets were distinguished, and Moses himself, no one opened the eyes of a blind man. And he says "from birth," so that no one might use either art or nature as a pretext, which might likely be said in the case of someone who had seen for a time and was later blinded and then regained sight. 92Jo 9, 33 Through this he refutes the audacity of those who had said, "This man is not from God, because he does not keep the sabbath." 93Jo 9, 34 Not being able to face what was being said, they turned to insults, saying things which are not possible, not even being taught by the blind man that it is impossible for one who has not come into existence to have sinned, but after the entrance into life of each one who uses the free will of the soul as he wishes, nor does a child suffer for a father. They therefore, speaking and doing all things without judgment, cast him out and separated him from their own council. 94 Jo 9, 35-36 In addition to healing him, he also wished to provide the illumination of true knowledge. Therefore he asked him if he believes, so that, when he agreed, he might also hand down the precision of the dogma; for he was grateful toward his benefactor. Therefore, hearing "Do you believe in the Son of God," he immediately agreed and hastened to learn precisely who he is before believing in him, saying, "And who is he, Lord, that I may believe in him." 95Jo 9, 38 He agreed not only with words, but also through worship he showed the devotion of his soul, no longer calling him a man or a prophet, but confessing him Lord and God through worship. 96Jo 9, 39 Not only were those blind in their eyes healed, but also those formerly blinded by unbelief were enlightened through the teaching of the Lord, but those who

σάββατον ἐβεβήλουν. διὸ καὶ ὡς βλασφημοῦντες κατ' αὐτοῦ ἔλεγον τὸ οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ θεοῦ. ἄλλοι δὲ κἂν ἐκ μέρους εἰς αἴσθησιν ἐλθόντες διεμάχοντο πρὸς ἐκείνους ὑπὸ θείας δυνάμεως λέγοντες γίνεσθαι ταῦτα οὐ μὴν διὰ ἐνεργείας ἁμαρτωλῶν καὶ διαμερισθεῖσαν εἶχον τὴν ἰδίαν γνώμην. 80Jo 9, 17 Σχιζόμενοι ἀπ' ἀλλήλων διαπυνθάνονται πάλιν τοῦ τυφλοῦ. ὁ δὲ οὐκέτι ἄνθρωπον ἁπλῶς, ἀλλὰ προφήτην ὀνομάζει παρρησιαζόμενος. 81Jo 9, 18-19 Εἰς τοσαύτην ἀναίδειαν ἦλθον οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὡς μηδὲ αὐτῷ τῷ ἀναβλέ ψαντι πιστεύειν, ὅτι τυφλὸς ἦν πρότερον καίπερ τῶν γειτόνων καὶ τῶν ἐπι σταμένων αὐτὸν τοῦτο εἰπόντων. ἕως ὅπου τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ μεταπεμ ψάμενοι ἠρώτησαν αὐτούς, εἰ αὐτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς αὐτῶν, ὃν λέγουσιν τυφλὸν γεγεννῆσθαι. 82Jo 9, 22 Οὕτω γὰρ ἦν ἡ κακία κατακρατήσασα τῶν ἀρχόντων ὡς μὴ μόνον ἑαυτοὺς βλάπτειν διὰ ἀπιστίαν, ἀλλ' ἤδη καὶ τοῖς λοιποῖς ἀποκλείειν τὴν ὁδὸν τῆς σωτηρίας διὰ ἀπειλῆς. 83Jo 9, 24-25 ∆ιὰ ὑπερβολὴν πονηρίας ἁμαρτωλὸν τὸν δίκαιον ἔλεγον οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι. ὁ δὲ ἀναβλέψας οὐ μόνον, ὅτι τῆς εὐεργεσίας τὴν χάριν σαφῶς ὁμολογεῖ τοῦ κυρίου, ἀλλὰ καὶ πρὸς ἔλεγχον τῆς ἐκείνων δυσσεβείας ἔλεγε τὸ ἓν οἶδα, ὅτι τυφλόν με ὄντα ἐποίησεν ἀναβλέψαι. 85Jo 9, 26 Ἠρώτων συνεχῶς οὐχ ἵνα θαυμάσαντες ἀποστῶσι τῆς ἀσεβείας, ἀλλ' ἵνα ἐπὶ πλεῖον μάχωνται πρὸς τὰ λεγόμενα. 86Jo 9, 27 Εἰδὼς ὅτι μάχεσθαι ἤθελον, οὕτως αὐτοῖς ἀπεκρίνατο. 87 Jo 9, 28 Ὡς λοιδοροῦντες αὐτὸν σφόδρα τοῦ κυρίου μαθητὴν ὠνόμαζον, ἑαυτοὺς δὲ Μωυσέως οὐχ ὡς ἐκεῖνον τιμῶντες, ἀλλ' ὡς ἐναντιούμενοι τῇ τοῦ κυρίου διδασκαλίᾳ. 88 Jo 9, 29 Ἀκρίτως φθεγγόμενοι καὶ οὐκ εἰδότες, ὅτι αὐτὸς ἦν ὁ Μωυσεῖ λαλήσας, ἐναντία ἑαυτοῖς φθέγγονται νῦν μὲν λέγοντες οὐκ οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστὶν οὗτος, ἄλλοτε δὲ εἰπόντες τοῦτον οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν. ὁ δὲ Χριστὸς ὅταν ἔλθῃ, φησίν, οὐδεὶς οἶδε πόθεν ἐστίν. 89 Jo 9, 30 Ὡς ἀγνώμονας αὐτοὺς διελέγχων φησίν, ὅτι οὐκ ὀφείλει τις διὰ τὴν ὑμε τέραν ἄγνοιαν ἀθετεῖν τὴν ἐκείνου δύναμιν, ἀλλὰ χρὴ τὴν ἐκείνου φιλίαν προ φέρειν εἰς ἔλεγχον τῆς ὑμῶν ἀπιστίας. 90Jo 9, 31 Ἵνα μὴ δόξῃ δι' ὧν σιωπᾷ τοῖς λέγουσιν αὐτὸν ἁμαρτωλὸν συντίθεσθαι ἐπιδείκνυσιν, ὅτι δι' ὧν αὐτὸν εὐηργέτησεν, θεοσεβής ἐστιν· ἡ γὰρ τοῦ θεοῦ εὐδοκία ἡ γενομένη περὶ τὴν ἐμὴν θεραπείαν γνώρισμά ἐστι τῆς τοῦ εἰσακουσ θέντος εὐσεβείας. 91Jo 9, 32 ΤοJoύτων γὰρ ἁγίων καὶ προφητῶν διαπρεψάντων καὶ αὐτοῦ Μωυσέως οὐδεὶς ἤνοιξεν ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ. ἐκ γενετῆς δέ φησιν, ἵνα μή τις ἢ τὴν τέχνην ἢ τὴν φύσιν προφασίσηται, ὅπερ ἦν εἰκὸς λεχθῆναι ἐπί τινος τῶν ἀπὸ χρόνου βλεπόντων καὶ τυφλωθέντων ὕστερον καὶ πάλιν ἀναβλεψάντων. 92Jo 9, 33 ∆ιὰ τούτου τὴν τόλμαν ἐλέγχει τῶν εἰρηκότων ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος οὐκ ἔστιν ἀπὸ θεοῦ, ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ. 93Jo 9, 34 Οὐ δυνάμενοι ἀντιβλέψαι πρὸς τὰ λεγόμενα εἰς ὕβρεις ἐτράπησαν λέγοντες ἃ μὴ ἐγχωρεῖ, μηδὲ ὑπὸ τοῦ τυφλοῦ διδασκόμενοι, ὅτι τὸν μὴ ἐλθόντα εἰς ὕπαρξιν ἀδύνατον ἁμαρτῆσαι, ἀλλὰ μετὰ τὴν εἰς τὸν βίον πάροδον ἑκάστου τοῦ αὐτεξουσίᾳ τῆς ψυχῆς χρωμένου ὡς βούλεται, ἀλλ' οὐδὲ παῖς ὑπὲρ πατρὸς πάσχει. ἐκεῖνοι οὖν ἀκρίτως πάντα λαλοῦντες καὶ ποιοῦντες ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν καὶ ἀφώρισαν τοῦ ἰδίου συνεδρίου. 94 Jo 9, 35-36 Πρὸς τῷ θεραπεῦσαι αὐτὸν καὶ τῆς ἀληθοῦς γνώσεως παρασχεῖν τὸν φωτισμὸν ἐβούλετο. διὸ αὐτὸν ἠρώτησεν, εἰ πιστεύει, ἵνα συνθεμένου αὐτοῦ καὶ τὴν τοῦ δόγματος ἀκρίβειαν παραδῷ· ἦν γὰρ εὐχάριστος περὶ τὸν εὐεργέτην. διὸ ἀκούσας πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ θεοῦ εὐθὺς συνθέμενος ἔσπευσεν ἀκριβῶς μαθεῖν τίς ἐστι πρὸ τοῦ εἰς αὐτὸν πιστεῦσαι λέγων καὶ τίς ἐστιν, κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν. 95Jo 9, 38 Οὐ ῥήμασι μόνον συνέθετο, ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ τῆς προσκυνήσεως ἐδείκνυε τῆς ψυχῆς τὴν καθοσίωσιν οὐκέτι αὐτὸν ἄνθρωπον ἢ προφήτην ὀνομάζων, ἀλλὰ κύριον καὶ θεὸν διὰ τῆς προσκυνήσεως ὁμολογῶν. 96Jo 9, 39 Οὐ μόνον οἱ τοῖς ὄμμασιν τυφλοὶ ἐθεραπεύοντο, ἀλλὰ καὶ οἱ πρῴην τῇ ἀπιστίᾳ τυφλώττοντες ἐφωτίζοντο διὰ τῆς τοῦ κυρίου διδασκαλίας, οἱ δὲ
