that these were at work, and they themselves, being afraid, called for Antony. But he listened more to these than he cared for those. And coming near the door, he urged the men to withdraw and not to be afraid; for thus he said the demons make phantoms against the timid. You, therefore, seal yourselves, and depart confidently; and let these play by themselves. So they went away, fortified by the sign of the cross. But he remained, and was in no way harmed by them; nor did he grow weary in the struggle; for the addition of the heavenly visions that came to him, and the weakness of the enemies, provided him much rest from his labors, and prepared him for greater zeal. For his acquaintances constantly came by, expecting to find him dead, and heard him chanting: Let God arise, and let His enemies be scattered, and let them that hate Him flee from His face. As smoke vanishes, let them vanish; as wax melts before the face of fire, so let the sinners perish from the face of God; and again: All the nations surrounded me, and in the name of the Lord I repelled them. For nearly twenty years, then, he continued, practicing asceticism thus by himself, neither going forth, nor being seen continuously by anyone. But after these things, when many longed and wished to emulate his asceticism, and other acquaintances came and by force threw down and pushed open the door; Antony came forth as if from some shrine, initiated in the mysteries and inspired by God; and then for the first time he appeared from the fort to those who came to him. They, then, when they saw him, were amazed to see that his body had the same condition, and was neither grown fat, as if from lack of exercise, nor gaunt from fasting and fighting 26.865 with demons; for he was such as they had known him before his withdrawal. And again, the character of his soul was pure; for it was neither constricted as by grief, nor dissipated by pleasure, nor possessed by laughter or dejection; for he was neither disturbed at seeing the crowd, nor did he rejoice at being embraced by so many; but he was entirely balanced, as one governed by reason, and established in his natural state. Indeed, the Lord healed through him many of those present who were suffering in their bodies; and others he cleansed from demons. And He gave grace to Antony in his speech; and so he comforted many who were grieving, and others who were quarreling he reconciled to friendship; urging all to prefer nothing in the world to the love of Christ. And conversing and exhorting them to be mindful of the good things to come and of the love of God for us, who did not spare His own Son, but gave Him up for us all; he persuaded many to choose the solitary life; and so, thereafter, monasteries came to be in the mountains, and the desert was made a city by monks, who came out from their own homes and registered for the citizenship in heaven. And when there was need for him to cross the Arsenoite canal (the need was a visit to the brethren), the canal was full of crocodiles. And having only prayed, both he and all who were with him embarked, and crossed unharmed. And returning to the monastery, he held to the same revered and youthful labors. And by discoursing continually, he increased the zeal of those who were already monks, and moved most of the others to a love of the ascetic life, and quickly, as his word drew them, very many monasteries came into being, and he guided them all as a father. One day, then, having come forth, and when all the monks had come to him, asking to hear a word from him 26.868, he said these things to them in the Egyptian tongue: The
