Sometime you will repent of your evil counsels, when repentance is of no benefit to you. Let the example of the virgins teach you prudence. For they, not having oil in their vessels, when it was necessary for them to enter with the bridegroom, then felt that they were in need of the necessities. Therefore the word called them foolish, because, having wasted the time for using the oil in going about and procuring it, they unwittingly shut themselves out from the splendor of the bridal chamber.

Lest you also, postponing from year to year, and from month to month, and from day to day, and not receiving the oil, the nourishment of the light, should someday fall into a day which you do not expect, when the resources of life shall finally fail you; and there be want from every side and inconsolable affliction, when the physicians have given up, and your own family has given up; when, seized with frequent and dry gasping, with a furious fever burning and smoldering within, you will groan from the depths of your heart, but will not find anyone to grieve with you. And you will utter something faint and feeble, but there will be no one listening; and everything spoken by you is despised as delirium. Who will give baptism then? Who will remind one stupefied by suffering? Your relatives are despondent, those outside your suffering despise it, a friend hesitates to remind you, as it would cause disturbance, and perhaps even the physician deceives you, and you do not despair of yourself because of the natural love of life. Night and a desolation of helpers; the one who baptizes is not present. Death is at hand; those who lead away are urging. Who is the one to rescue you? God, who was despised? But will He listen then? For you listen to Him now. Will he grant an extension? For you have used the one given well.

Let no one deceive you with empty words. For sudden destruction will come upon you, and ruin will arrive like a tempest. A grim angel will come, violently leading away and dragging your soul, bound by its sins, frequently turning back toward the things here, and wailing without a voice, the organ of lamentation having finally been shut. Oh, how much you will tear yourself apart! how much you will groan! repenting in vain for your decisions, when you see the brightness of the righteous in the splendid distribution of gifts, and the gloom of sinners in the deepest darkness. What things will you say in the anguish of your heart then? Woe is me, for not having cast off this heavy burden of sin, when the setting aside was so easy, but for dragging along this heap of evils. Woe is me, for not having washed away the stains, but for being marked with sins. Now I would be with the angels; now I would be reveling in the heavenly good things. O evil counsels! For a temporary enjoyment of sin I am tormented eternally; for the pleasure of the flesh I am given over to the fire. The judgment of God is just; I was called, and I did not obey; I was taught, and I did not pay attention; they testified to me, but I mocked. These things and such as these you will say, bewailing yourself, if you are snatched away before baptism. O man, either fear Gehenna, or lay claim to the kingdom. Do not dishonor the call. Do not say, 'Have me excused for this or that reason.' No excuse is sufficient for refusal. It comes upon me to weep, when I consider that you prefer the works of shame to the great glory of God, and because of the pleasure of licentiousness, clinging tenaciously to sin, you shut yourself out from the good things in the promises, so as not to see the good things of the heavenly Jerusalem. There are myriads of angels, festive gatherings of the firstborn, thrones of apostles, chief seats of prophets, scepters of patriarchs, crowns of martyrs, praises of the righteous. Desire to be numbered with them, having washed yourself and been sanctified according to the gift of Christ; for to Him is the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
