and offering manifold supplications for her to be released from the 315 retribution for the offenses committed against him and to stop the shaking of her coffin, which for thirty-five years was incessantly agitated as if in an earthquake, which, as one who for so many years had shaken the church, she was herself shaken and wandered away in the likeness of Cain. And indeed he obtains his requests, as it is possible to infer the unseen from the seen. But see here the most fervent purpose of the Christ-loving emperor; for he converses with that holy and thrice-desired relic as if it were alive. For it was truly a wonder to see, surpassing all thought. For as his senses were now at rest, he reckoned that the saint was sleeping sweetly. And indeed he spread the royal mantle over that sacred tabernacle, as if making the truly imperial rule of the Romans subject to him, at once hoping that through it both he and the Roman dominion would be sanctified. Then after him also the chosen priesthood. There was much pushing both of those in authority and of the people to get near and to touch only the sacred coffin. Then with abundant light and lavish fragrances of incense and spices, and with the raised songs of hymns and piercing voices, as if in triumph through the middle of the city, he is brought to the great and catholic church of Peace. And having been placed upon his own throne by the holy Proclus, and with the whole city crying out with much gladness and joy, 'Enjoy your throne and your people, whom you enlightened with your teachings, O divinely appointed high priest,' then thus by the royal command of the emperor that sacred tabernacle was placed reverently and auspiciously upon a royal chariot, just as the sun is carried in a fiery chariot. And if Proclus was also a companion to the wise Chrysostom, laboring and ministering about his holy tabernacle, thanks to the good teacher who both chose him for discipleship and appointed him a rightful successor of his throne and virtue. So the renowned Proclus, placing that heavy coffer of the holy relic before himself, settles it at the famous and most beautiful church of the Holy Apostles. And thus raised upon the holy cathedra and here established upon the divine throne, and having mystically moved his closed lips and given peace to the flock, as was said and believed by those who were deemed worthy to see such things more clearly, he was laid in the coffin of his repose, and there this inviolable good has been treasured up for us, and now it is for emperors and rulers, for high priests and clergy and the people a most precious treasure, a ceaseless heirloom, an inalienable treasure, a fount of healings, an ever-flowing river of teachings, a foundation of orthodoxy, a pillar of the churches, a bulwark 316 and ornament and crown of boasting for the great city that received him. For it was not right that she who was directed by so many good things and adorned with so many statues of virtue should be, as it were, mutilated in her most vital part and be deprived of her proper adornment, and should be clothed in a squalid and mournful garment, seeing him who with the beauty of his words had adorned her like a bride, dwelling neglected beyond the border. And when the divine and bloodless sacrifice had been celebrated according to custom, the all-renowned Proclus with the priestly order, and with the emperor Theodosius present at the rites and the whole senatorial council assembled in the same place, they turn to the burial of that God-bearing and truly undefiled relic. And again a wonder within a wonder, and one that surpasses reason and is, as it were, extraordinary; for a certain man afflicted with the disease of arthritis and for many years paralyzed by it in both his hands and feet, and lying on a bed like some other paralytic, and having despaired of all recovery and nearly expired, they brought him and touched him to this precious relic of the blessed one. And as the paralyzed man himself with tears was supplicating the saint for what was fitting, it came to pass that he did not fail to obtain the cure, so that all who beheld it sent up glory to God who such grace

Ὅρα δ' ἐνταῦθα τὴν τοῦ φιλοχρίστου βασιλέως θερμοτάτην προαίρεσιν· καὶ γὰρ ὡς ζῶντι τῷ ἁγίῳ ἐκείνῳ καὶ τριποθήτῳ λειψάνῳ προσομιλεῖ. Ἦν γὰρ ἰδεῖν ὄντως θαῦμα πᾶσαν ὑπερεκπίπτον ἔννοιαν. Ὡς ἄρτι γὰρ τῶν αἰσθήσεων ἠρεμουσῶν ἡδέως καθεύδειν τὸν ἅγιον ἐλογίζετο. Καὶ δὴ καὶ τὴν βασίλειον χλαῖναν προσεφαπλοῖ ἄνωθεν τοῦ ἱεροῦ ἐκείνου σκήνους ὡς ὑπεξούσιον αὐτῷ δῆθεν ποιῶν τὴν αὐτοκρατορικὴν ὄντως τῶν ῥωμαίων ἀρχὴν ὁμοῦ τε δι' αὐτῆς ἁγιασθῆναι καὶ τὸ ῥωμαίων κράτος ἐπηλπικώς. Ἔπειτα μετ' ἐκεῖνον καὶ τὸ ἔκκριτον ἱεράτευμα. Πολὺς ἦν ὠθισμὸς καὶ τῶν ἐν τέλει καὶ τοῦ λαοῦ πρὸς τὸ πλησίον γενέσθαι καὶ ψαῦσαι μόνον τοῦ ἱεροφόρου σοροῦ. Εἶτα δαψιλεῖ τῷ φωτὶ καὶ ἀφθόνοις εὐωδίαις θυμιαμάτων καὶ ἀρωμάτων ἐπηρμέναις τε τῶν ὕμνων ᾠδαῖς καὶ διαπρυσίοις φωναῖς διὰ μέσης οἷον θριαμβεύων τῆς πόλεως ἐπὶ τὴν τῆς Εἰρήνης μεγάλην καὶ καθολικὴν ἀπάγεται. Ἐπὶ δὲ τὸν ἴδιον θρόνον παρὰ τοῦ ἱεροῦ Πρόκλου ἀνατεθείς, πάσης δὲ τῆς πόλεως μετὰ πολλῆς θυμηδίας καὶ χαρμονῆς ἐκβοησάσης ἀπόλαυέ σου καὶ θρόνον καὶ τὸν λαόν, ὃν ταῖς σαῖς διδαχαῖς ἐφώτισας, ἀρχιερεῦ θεοπρόβλητε, εἶθ' οὕτως τῇ βασιλικῇ κελεύσει τοῦ αὐτοκράτορος τὸ ἱερὸν ἐκεῖνο σκῆνος βασιλείῳ ἅρματι εὐλαβῶς ἅμα καὶ αἰσίως ἐπετέθη καθάπερ ἥλιος τῷ πυρίνῳ ἅρματι διφρευόμενος. Εἰ δὲ καὶ Πρόκλος συνέποχος ἦν τῷ σοφῷ Χρυσοστόμῳ περὶ τὸ ἅγιον αὐτοῦ σκῆνος πονῶν καὶ διακονῶν, χάρις τῷ καλῷ διδασκάλῳ τῷ καὶ προελομένῳ εἰς μαθητείαν καὶ ἀναδείξαντι καὶ θρόνου καὶ ἀρετῆς κύριον διάδοχον. Ὁ μὲν οὖν ἀοίδιμος Πρόκλος πρὸ ἑαυτοῦ θεὶς τὴν πολύολκον ἐκείνην τοῦ ἁγίου λειψάνου θήκην πρὸς τῷ τῶν θείων ἀποστόλων περιωνύμῳ καὶ περικαλλεῖ ναῷ ἀποικίζεται. Καὶ οὕτως ἐπὶ τῆς ἱερᾶς καθέδρας ἀνυψωθεὶς καὶ τῷ θείῳ κἀνταῦθα θρόνῳ ἐνιδρυθεὶς μυστικῶς τε τὰ μεμυκότα κινήσας χείλη καὶ εἰρηνεύσας τὸ ποίμνιον ὡς παρὰ τῶν διαυγέστερον ἠξιωμένων τὰ τοιαῦτα ὁρᾶν ἐλέγετό τε καὶ ἐπιστεύετο τῇ τῆς ἀναπαύσεως ἐναπετέθη σορῷ, κἀνταῦθα ἡμῖν τὸ ἄσυλον τοῦτο ἀποτεθησαύρισται ἀγαθὸν καὶ νῦν ἐστι βασιλεῦσι καὶ ἄρχουσιν, ἀρχιερεῦσι καὶ κλήρῳ καὶ τῷ λαῷ πολύτιμος ὄλβος, κειμήλιον ἄπαυστον, θησαυρὸς ἀναφαίρετος, ἰαμάτων πηγή, διδαγμάτων ἀέναος ποταμός, ὀρθοδοξίας κρηπίς, στύλος ἐκκλησιῶν, ὀχύρωμα 316 καὶ κόσμος καὶ καυχήσεως στέφανος τῆς ὑποδεξαμένης μεγαλοπόλεως. Οὐ γὰρ ἔδει τὴν τοσούτοις εὐθυνουμένην καλοῖς καὶ τοσούτοις ἐναγλαϊζομένην ἀγάλμασιν ἀρετῆς οἷον ἠκρωτηριᾶσθαι περὶ τὸ καιριώτερον καὶ τὸν οἰκεῖον περιῃρεῖσθαι κόσμον, πιναρὰν δὲ καὶ πένθιμον στολὴν ἐνδιδύσκεσθαι τὸν τῷ κάλλει τῶν λόγων ὡς νύμφην ταύτην καταστολίσαντα κατὰ τὴν ὑπερόριον ὁρῶσαν παροραθέντα αὐλίζεσθαι. Τῆς δὲ θείας καὶ ἀναιμάκτου θυσίας κατὰ τὸ εἰωθὸς τελεσθείσης Πρόκλος ὁ παναοίδιμος μετὰ τοῦ ἱερατικοῦ καταλόγου καὶ τοῦ βασιλέως παρόντος Θεοδοσίου τοῖς τελουμένοις καὶ πάσης τῆς συγκλήτου βουλῆς εἰς ταὐτὸ συγκεκροτημένης πρὸς τὴν κηδείαν τρέπονται τοῦ θεοφόρου ἐκείνου καὶ ὄντως ἀκηράτου λειψάνου. Καὶ πάλιν θαῦμα ἐν θαύματι καὶ λογισμοὺς ἐκβαῖνον καὶ οἷον ἐξαίσιον· ἄνθρωπον γάρ τινα νόσῳ ἀθρίτιδι κατεσχημένον καὶ ἐπὶ πολλοῖς ἔτεσιν ἐξ αὐτῆς χεῖράς τε καὶ πόδας παρειμένον καὶ ὡς ἄλλον τινὰ παραλελυμένον ἐπὶ κλίνης βεβλημένον καὶ σωτηρίας ἁπάσης ἀπειρηκότα καὶ μικροῦ ἀποψύχοντα ἐνεγκόντες τῷ τιμίῳ τούτῳ λειψάνῳ κατέψων τοῦ μακαρίου. Αὐτοῦ δὲ τοῦ παρειμένου σὺν δάκρυσι τὸν ἅγιον ἱκετεύοντος τὰ εἰκότα ἐγένετο μὴ ἀποτυχεῖν τῆς ἰάσεως ὥστε πάντας τοὺς θεασαμένους δόξαν ἀναπέμψαι θεῷ τῷ τοιαύτην χάριν
