of the same body, by the same inbreathing. And children are born to him, both male and female. And having lived nine hundred and thirty years, he paid the debt of nature. His child was Seth, and his son Enos, and in succession Cainan, Mahalalel, Jared. As the tradition that has come down to us contains, from this point evil-doing began to arise in the world, and from the beginning through the disobedience of Adam, then through the fratricide of Cain, and now in the times of Jared and beyond, sorcery and magic, licentiousness, both adultery and injustice. 1.173 Not some other opinion, not a changed doctrine, but one language and one race was sown upon the earth at that time. And to this Jared is born a child named Enoch, who “pleased God and was not found; for God translated him” and “did not see death.” And Enoch begets Methuselah, Methuselah Lamech, Lamech Noah. And the just judgment of God, bringing a flood of water upon the inhabited world, wiped out all flesh of both men and of the others *, but preserved in an ark by command Noah, who had pleased him and found grace, both the aforementioned Noah himself and his three sons, Shem, Ham, Japheth, and his own wife and the three wives of his three sons, so that eight human souls in the ark at that time were saved from the water of the flood, and from every kind of wild beast and living creature, both cattle and the others upon the earth for the re-establishment of the existence of all things in the world, from some two by two and from others seven by seven. And thus the tenth generation passed, of two thousand two hundred and sixty-two years. And the flood has ceased and Noah and his house have become a remnant for the world. Not yet was there heterodoxy, not any differing nation, not a name of heresy, nor even idolatry. But since each of men followed his own opinion—for not one law existed; for each became a law to himself and followed his own opinion, as is the usage in the apostle, not only of Barbarism, but also of the others; for he says, “in Christ Jesus there is neither barbarian, nor Scythian, nor Greek, nor Jew,”—Barbarism was then called the name in the ten generations of time. 1.174 2. Scythianism. After the flood, when the ark of Noah came to rest on the mountains of Ararat, between the Armenians and the Cardyaians on the mountain called Lubar, there first a dwelling of men came to be after the flood, and there Noah the prophet plants a vineyard, and he becomes the founder of the place. And children are born to his children—for it no longer shows that he himself begot—and children of children until the fifth generation, of six hundred fifty-nine years, apart from Shem. In sequence, I will go through the genealogy of the one son: Shem, then, begets Arphaxad, Arphaxad Cainan, Cainan Salah, Salah Eber, reverent and God-fearing, Eber Peleg. And there was nothing upon the earth—not heresy, not another and another opinion, but only men they were called, “of one lip and one language.” But there was only impiety and piety, the law according to nature and the will of each according to nature, not from teaching nor from the writings of authors an error, not Judaism, not Hellenism, not any other heresy, but, so to speak, the faith now practiced in the present holy catholic church of God, being from the beginning and later revealed again. For to the one wishing to see * truthfully, * the beginning of all things is the catholic and holy church, from this very point. For Adam the first-formed was fashioned not circumcised, 1.175 but uncircumcised in the flesh, and he was not an idolater and he knew God the Father and Son and Holy Spirit; for he was a prophet. Therefore not having circumcision he was not a Jew, but wooden idols
