And he showed them also how to shine and to beautify and the choice stones and the art of dyeing. and the sons of men made them for themselves and for their daughters, and they transgressed and led astray the holy ones, and there was much impiety upon the earth; and they corrupted their ways. Furthermore, their chief, Semiazas, taught them to have anger against the mind, and the roots of the herbs of the earth. The 11th, Pharmaros, taught sorceries, incantations, sophistries, and the loosing of incantations. The 9th taught the observation of stars. The 4th taught astrology. The 8th taught the observation of the air. The 3rd taught the signs of the earth. The 7th taught the signs of the sun. The 20th taught the signs of the moon. And all these began 13 to reveal the mysteries to their wives and to their children. And after these things, the giants began to devour the flesh of men; and men began to be diminished upon the earth. And the rest cried out to heaven concerning their mistreatment, saying that their memorial should be brought before the Lord. And hearing, the four great archangels Michael and Uriel and Raphael and Gabriel looked down upon the earth from the holy places of heaven; and seeing much blood poured out upon the earth and all impiety and lawlessness having come upon it, they entered in and said to one another that the spirits and the souls of men are groaning, interceding and saying, "Bring our judgment to the Most High, and our destruction before the glory of the majesty, before the Lord of all lords in majesty." And they said to the Lord of the ages: "You are the God of gods and Lord of lords and the King of kings and God of the ages, and the throne of your glory is for all the generations of the ages, and your name is holy and blessed for all the ages," and so forth. Then the Most High commanded the holy archangels, and they bound their leaders and cast them into the abyss, until the judgment, and so forth. And these things Enoch testifies. But the God-seer Moses says in Genesis: "And it came to pass, when men began to be many upon the earth, and daughters were born to them. And the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were beautiful, they took to themselves wives from all whom they chose." Then, "and after that, when the sons of God went in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them, those were the giants of old, the men of renown," and so forth. But the chief and apostle Peter in his second epistle says thus concerning them: "For if God did not spare the angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly." 14 These things, for the benefit of those who wish, I have set forth from the divine scriptures. And it is worthwhile also to set forth a certain usage of Zosimus of Panopolis the philosopher concerning them from the things written by him to Theosebeia in the 9th book of Imouth, which runs as follows: "The sacred scriptures or books say, O woman, that there is a certain race of demons which makes use of women. And Hermes mentioned it in his physical works, and almost every account, both manifest and secret, has mentioned this. Therefore, the ancient and divine scriptures said this, that certain angels desired women and, having descended, taught them all the works of nature, on account of which, he says, having given offense, they remained outside of heaven, because they taught men all evil things and nothing that profits the soul. From them, the same scriptures say that the giants were also born. Therefore, their first tradition is Chemeu concerning these arts. And he called this book Chemeu, whence the art is also called chemistry," and so forth. Since these things are so concerning the Watchers from Seth, it is necessary to know that in the

Ὁ δὲ κορυφαῖος καὶ ἀπόστολος Πέτρος ἐν ἐπιστολῇ δευτέρᾳ περὶ αὐτῶν οὕτω φησίν· «εἰ γὰρ ὁ θεὸς ἀγγέλων ἁμαρτησάντων οὐκ ἐφείσατο, ἀλλὰ σειραῖς ζόφου ταρταρώσας παρέδωκεν εἰς κρίσιν κολαζομένους τηρεῖν, καὶ ἀρχαίου κόσμου οὐκ ἐφείσατο, ἀλλ' ὄγδοον Νῶε δικαιοσύνης κήρυκα ἐφύλαξε, κατακλυσμὸν κόσμῳ ἀσεβῶν ἐπάξας.» 14 Ταῦτά τοι πρὸς ὠφέλειαν τῶν βουλομένων ἐκ τῶν θείων γραφῶν παρα τέθεικα. ἄξιον δὲ καὶ Ζωσίμου τοῦ Πανοπολίτου φιλοσόφου χρῆσίν τινα παραθέσθαι περὶ αὐτῶν ἐκ τῶν γεγραμμένων αὐτῷ πρὸς θεοσέβειαν ἐν τῷ θʹ τῆς Ἰμοὺθ βίβλῳ, ἔχουσαν ὧδε· «φάσκουσιν αἱ ἱεραὶ γραφαὶ ἤτοι βί βλοι, ὦ γύναι, ὅτι ἔστι τι δαιμόνων γένος ὃ χρῆται γυναιξίν. ἐμνημόνευσε δὲ καὶ Ἑρμῆς ἐν τοῖς φυσικοῖς, καὶ σχεδὸν ἅπας λόγος φανερὸς καὶ ἀπό κρυφος τοῦτο ἐμνημόνευσε. τοῦτο οὖν ἔφασαν αἱ ἀρχαῖαι καὶ θεῖαι γραφαί, ὅτι ἄγγελοί τινες ἐπεθύμησαν τῶν γυναικῶν καὶ κατελθόντες ἐδίδαξαν αὐτὰς πάντα τὰ τῆς φύσεως ἔργα, ὧν χάριν, φησί, προσκρούσαντες ἔξω τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἔμειναν, ὅτι πάντα τὰ πονηρὰ καὶ μηδὲν ὠφελοῦντα τὴν ψυχὴν ἐδίδαξαν τοὺς ἀνθρώπους. ἐξ αὐτῶν φάσκουσιν αἱ αὐταὶ γραφαὶ καὶ τοὺς γίγαντας γεγενῆσθαι. ἔστιν οὖν αὐτῶν ἡ πρώτη παράδοσις Χημεῦ περὶ τούτων τῶν τεχνῶν. ἐκάλεσε δὲ ταύτην τὴν βίβλον Χημεῦ, ἔνθεν καὶ ἡ τέχνη χημεία καλεῖται» καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς. Τούτων οὕτως ἐχόντων περὶ τῶν ἐκ τοῦ Σὴθ ἐγρηγόρων δέον γινώσκειν ὅτι παρὰ μὲν τῇ
