Do you not weep a tear? May you never meet such a judge. Are you not ashamed of the love for humanity of Jesus, the one who took our infirmities, and bore our diseases, the one who came not for the righteous, but for sinners to repentance, the one who desires mercy rather than sacrifice, the one who forgives sins seventy times seven? How blessed would be your loftiness, if it were purity and not pride, legislating beyond what is human, and undoing correction with despair. For it is equally evil, both unrestrained indulgence and unforgiving condemnation; the one letting loose the whole rein, the other strangling by its severity. Show me your purity, and I accept your audacity. But now I fear that, teeming with sores, you may introduce the incurable. Do you not accept David repenting, for whom repentance even preserved the prophetic gift? Nor great Peter who suffered something human around the time of the saving passion? But Jesus accepted him, and by the threefold questioning and confession, he healed the threefold denial. Or do you not even accept one perfected through blood? For this too is part of your 36.357 madness. Nor the one who sinned in Corinth? But Paul even ratified love, since he saw the correction; and the reason: "lest such a one be swallowed up by excessive sorrow," being weighed down by the immoderation of the rebuke. Nor do you give the young widows in marriage, on account of the vulnerability of their age? But Paul dared this, whose teacher you obviously are, as if you had reached a fourth heaven, and another paradise, and had heard more ineffable words, and had encompassed a greater circle with the Gospel.

19. But these things were not after baptism. What is the proof? Either show it, or do not condemn. But if it is doubtful, let love for humanity prevail. But Novatus, he says, did not accept those who had fallen away during the persecution. What of that? If they were not repentant, rightly so; neither do I accept those who are either unbending, or unworthily so, nor those who do not counterbalance the evil with correction; and when I do accept them, I assign them their proper place. But if it was those who were wasted away with tears, I will not imitate him. And what law to me is the misanthropy of Novatus, who did not punish avarice, the second idolatry, but so bitterly condemned fornication, as if he were without flesh and without a body? What do you say? Do we persuade you with these words? Come, stand with us human beings. Let us magnify the Lord together. Let none of you dare to say, not even if he is very confident in himself: "Do not touch me, for I am pure, and who is so as I am?" Share with us also your splendor. But do we not persuade you? We will also weep for you. Therefore, let these men, if they wish, go our way and Christ's, but if not, let them go their own. Perhaps there they will be baptized with fire, the final baptism, the more painful and longer one, which eats up the material like grass, and consumes the lightness of all evil.

20. But let us honor the baptism of Christ today, and let us celebrate well, not feasting with the belly, but rejoicing spiritually. But how shall we feast? Wash yourselves, become clean. If you are scarlet in your sin, and less bloody, be made white as snow; but if you are crimson and men of utter bloodshed, may you yet attain to the whiteness of wool. In every way, be purified and be cleansed. As 36.360 God rejoices in nothing so much as in the correction and salvation of a human being, for whom is every word and every mystery; that you may become as lights in the world, a life-giving power to other people, that as perfect lights standing beside the great light, you may be initiated into the illumination there, being illumined by the Trinity more purely and more clearly, of which you have now moderately received the one ray from the one Godhead, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory, and the power unto the ages of ages. οὐ δακρύεις δάκρυον; Μὴ σύ γε τοιούτου κριτοῦ τύχοις. Οὐκ αἰδῇ τὸ Ἰησοῦ φιλάνθρωπον, τοῦ τὰς ἀσθενείας ἡμῶν λαβόντος, καὶ τὰς νόσους βαστάσαντος, τοῦ μὴ δικαίοις ἐλθόντος, ἀλλ' ἁμαρτωλοῖς εἰς μετάνοιαν, τοῦ ἔλεον θέλοντος μᾶλλον ἢ θυσίαν, τοῦ ἑβδομηκοντάκις ἑπτὰ συγχωροῦντος τὰ ἁμαρτήματα; Ὡς μακάριόν σου τὸ ὑψηλὸν, εἰ καθαρότης ἦν, ἀλλὰ μὴ τῦφος, νομοθετῶν ὑπὲρ ἄνθρωπον, καὶ λύων τῇ ἀπογνώσει τὴν ἐπανόρθωσιν. Ὁμοίως γάρ ἐστι κακὸν, καὶ ἄνεσις ἀσωφρόνιστος, καὶ κατάγνωσις ἀσυγχώρητος· ἡ μὲν ὅλην ἐφιεῖσα τὴν ἡνίαν, ἡ δὲ τῷ σφοδρῷ κατάγχουσα. ∆εῖξόν μοι τὴν καθαρότητα, καὶ δέχομαί σου τὴν θρασύτητα. Νῦν δὲ δέδοικα, μὴ βρύων ἕλκεσιν, εἰσάγῃς τὸ ἀνιάτρευτον. Οὐδὲ τὸν ∆αβὶδ δέχῃ μετανοοῦντα, ᾧ καὶ τὸ προφητικὸν χάρισμα ἡ μετάνοια συνετήρησεν; Οὐδὲ Πέτρον τὸν μέγαν παθόντα τι ἀνθρώπινον περὶ τὸ σωτήριον πάθος; Ἰησοῦς δὲ ἐδέξατο, καὶ τῷ τρισσῷ τῆς ἐρωτήσεως καὶ τῆς ὁμολογίας, τὸ τρισσὸν τῆς ἀρνήσεως ἐθεράπευσεν. Ἢ οὐδὲ τελειωθέντα δέχῃ δι' αἵματος; Ἔστι γὰρ καὶ τοῦτο τῆς σῆς ἀπο 36.357 νοίας. Οὐδὲ τὸν ἐν Κορίνθῳ παρανομήσαντα; Παῦλος δὲ καὶ ἀγάπην ἐκύρωσεν, ἐπειδὴ τὴν διόρθωσιν εἶδε· καὶ τὸ αἴτιον· Ἵνα μὴ τῇ περισσοτέρᾳ λύπῃ καταποθῇ ὁ τοιοῦτος, βαρηθεὶς τῇ ἀμετρίᾳ τῆς ἐπιπλήξεως. Οὐδὲ τὰς νέας γαμίζεις χήρας, διὰ τὸ τῆς ἡλικίας εὐάλωτον; Παῦλος δὲ τοῦτο ἐτόλμησεν, οὗ σὺ δηλαδὴ διδάσκαλος, ὡς ἐπὶ τέταρτον οὐρανὸν φθάσας, καὶ ἄλλον παράδεισον, καὶ ἀποῤῥητοτέρων ἀκούσας ῥημάτων, καὶ μείζονα κύκλον τῷ Εὐαγγελίῳ περιλαβών.

ΙΘʹ. Ἀλλ' οὐ μετὰ τὸ βάπτισμα ταῦτα. Τίς ἡ ἀπόδειξις; ἢ δεῖξον, ἢ μὴ κατάκρινε. Εἰ δὲ ἀμφίβολον, νικάτω τὸ φιλάνθρωπον. Ἀλλὰ Ναυάτος, φησὶν, οὐκ ἐδέξατο τοὺς ἐν τῷ διωγμῷ παραπεσόντας. Τί τοῦτο; Εἰ μὲν οὐ μεταγνόντας, δικαίως· οὐδὲ ἐγὼ δέχομαι τοὺς, ἢ μὴ καμπτομένους, ἢ μὴ ἀξίως, μηδὲ ἀντισηκοῦντας τῷ κακῷ τὴν διόρθωσιν· καὶ ὅταν δέξωμαι, τὴν προσήκουσαν αὐτοῖς ἀπονέμω χώραν. Εἰ δὲ τοὺς ἐκτακέντας τοῖς δάκρυσιν, οὐ μιμήσομαι. Καὶ τίς μοι νόμος ἡ Ναυάτου μισανθρωπία, ὃς πλεονεξίαν μὲν οὐκ ἐκόλασε, τὴν δευτέραν εἰδωλολατρείαν· πορνείαν δὲ οὕτω πικρῶς κατεδίκασεν, ὡς ἄσαρκος καὶ ἀσώματος; Τί φατε; Πείθομεν ὑμᾶς τοῖς λόγοις τούτοις; ∆εῦρο, στῆτε μεθ' ἡμῶν τῶν ἀνθρώπων. Μεγαλύνωμεν ἅμα τὸν Κύριον. Μή τις ὑμῶν εἰπεῖν τολμήσῃ, μηδὲ εἰ λίαν ἑαυτῷ τεθάῤῥηκε· Μή μου ἅπτου, καθαρὸς γάρ εἰμι, καὶ τίς οὕτως ὥσπερ ἐγώ; μετάδοτε καὶ ἡμῖν τῆς λαμπρότητος. Ἀλλ' οὐ πείθομεν; καὶ ὑπὲρ ὑμῶν δακρύσομεν. Οὗτοι μὲν οὖν, εἰ μὲν βούλοιντο, τὴν ἡμετέραν ὁδὸν καὶ Χριστοῦ, εἰ δὲ μὴ, τὴν ἑαυτῶν πορευέσθωσαν. Τυχὸν ἐκεῖ τῷ πυρὶ βαπτισθήσονται, τῷ τελευταίῳ βαπτίσματι, τῷ ἐπιπονωτέρῳ τε καὶ μακροτέρῳ, ὃ ἐσθίει ὡς χόρτον τὴν ὕλην, καὶ δαπανᾷ πάσης κακίας κουφότητα.

Κʹ. Ἡμεῖς δὲ τιμήσωμεν τὸ Χριστοῦ βάπτισμα σήμερον, καὶ καλῶς ἑορτάσωμεν, μὴ γαστρὶ τρυφῶντες, ἀλλὰ πνευματικῶς εὐφραινόμενοι. Τρυφήσωμεν δὲ πῶς; Λούσασθε, καθαροὶ γίνεσθε. Εἰ μὲν φοινικικοὶ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν ἐστὲ, καὶ ἧττον αἱματώδεις, λευκάνθητε ὡς χιών· εἰ δὲ κόκκινοι καὶ ἄνδρες αἱμάτων τέλειοι, κἂν εἰς ἐρίου λευκότητα φθάσατε. Πάντως δὲ καθάρθητε καὶ καθαίρεσθε. Ὡς 36.360 οὐδενὶ τοσοῦτον χαίρει Θεὸς, ὅσον ἀνθρώπου διορθώσει καὶ σωτηρίᾳ, ὑπὲρ οὗ λόγος ἅπας καὶ ἅπαν μυστήριον· ἵνα γένησθε ὡς φωστῆρες ἐν κόσμῳ, ζωτικὴ τοῖς ἄλλοις ἀνθρώποις δύναμις, ἵνα φῶτα τέλεια τῷ μεγάλῳ φωτὶ παραστάντες, καὶ τὴν ἐκεῖσε μυηθῆτε φωταγωγίαν, ἐλλαμπόμενοι τῇ Τριάδι καθαρώτερον καὶ τρανότερον, ἧς νῦν μετρίως ὑποδέδεχθε τὴν μίαν αὐγὴν ἐκ μιᾶς τῆς θεότητος, ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, ᾧ ἡ δόξα, καὶ τὸ κράτος εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
