approaching the soul, there must be great calm, great quiet, profound peace of thoughts. But you have been greatly wronged. And you cannot bear to let go of the anger? Why then do you wrong yourself much more greatly and grievously? For the enemy, whatever he may do, will not inflict such things on you as you do to yourself by not being reconciled to him, but trampling on the laws of God. Did that man insult you? Therefore do you insult God, tell me? For not being reconciled to the one who has grieved you, is not so much defending yourself against him, as it is insulting God who legislated these things. Therefore, do not look to your fellow servant, nor to the magnitude of his wrongdoings; but taking God and the fear of him into your mind, consider this, that the more violence you suffer in your soul, being compelled after countless evils to be reconciled to the one who has grieved you, so much the more honor you will enjoy from God who commanded these things; and just as you receive him with much honor here, so also will he himself receive you with much glory there, repaying you ten thousandfold the rewards for this obedience; of which may it be for all of us to attain by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father be glory, honor, power and worship, together with the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. ἐπιβαίνοντος τῇ ψυχῇ, πολλὴν εἶναι δεῖ τὴν γαλήνην, πολλὴν τὴν ἡσυχίαν, βαθεῖαν τῶν λογισμῶν τὴν εἰρήνην. Ἀλλὰ μεγάλα ἠδίκησαι. καὶ οὐ φέρεις ἀφεῖναι τὴν ὀργήν; τί τοίνυν σαυτὸν πολλῷ μείζονα ἀδικεῖς καὶ χαλεπώτερα; Οὐ γὰρ τοιαῦτά σε διαθήσεται ὁ ἐχθρὸς ὅσαπερ ἂν ποιῇ, οἷα σὺ σαυτὸν μὴ καταλλαττόμενος πρὸς ἐκεῖνον, ἀλλὰ τοὺς τοῦ Θεοῦ καταπατῶν νόμους. Ὕβρισέ σε ἐκεῖνος; διὰ τοῦτο οὖν σὺ τὸν Θεὸν ὑβρίζεις, εἰπέ μοι; Τὸ γὰρ μὴ καταλλάττεσθαι τῷ λελυπηκότι, οὐκ ἐκεῖνόν ἐστιν ἀμυνομένου τοσοῦτον, ὅσον τὸν Θεὸν ὑβρίζοντος τὸν ταῦτα νομοθετήσαντα. Μὴ τοίνυν πρὸς τὸν σύνδουλον ἴδῃς, μηδὲ πρὸς τὸ μέγεθος τῶν ἀδικημάτων ἐκείνου· ἀλλὰ τὸν Θεὸν καὶ τὸν ἐκείνου φόβον εἰς νοῦν βαλλόμενος, ἐκεῖνο σκόπησον, ὅτι ὅσῳ ἂν μείζονα πάσχῃς βίαν κατὰ ψυχὴν, μετὰ μυρία κακὰ ἀναγκαζόμενος καταλλάττεσθαι τῷ λελυπηκότι, τοσούτῳ πλείονος ἀπολαύσῃ τῆς τιμῆς παρὰ τοῦ ταῦτα κελεύσαντος Θεοῦ· καὶ καθάπερ αὐτὸν μετὰ πολλῆς ὑποδέχῃ τῆς τιμῆς ἐνταῦθα, οὕτω καὶ αὐτὸς μετὰ πολλῆς ὑποδέξεταί σε τῆς δόξης ἐκεῖ, μυριοπλασίους ἀποδιδούς σοι τῆς ὑποκοῆς ταύτης τὰς ἀμοιβάς· ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, μεθ' οὗ τῷ Πατρὶ δόξα, τιμὴ, κράτος καὶ προσκύνησις, ἅμα τῷ ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
