I am waiting. Jesus says to her: I am he, the one speaking to you. O what great and paradoxical wonders! What he did not reveal to many of the apostles, this he reveals openly to the prostitute.

4. In the case of Cleopas he did not reveal himself to the apostles; but when

he opened their eyes, then he became invisible to them, so that the disciples even said, ‘Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us on the way, and while he opened to us the Scriptures?’ To them he did not reveal himself, and to the woman he says: I am he, the one speaking to you. What he did for Paul alone, who ascended to the third heaven, who was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, who caught the world in his net, this he had already done for the Samaritan woman. To Paul he clearly revealed himself from heaven, saying: Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to kick against the pricks. And Saul answered, saying: Who are you, Lord? And he answered: I am Jesus Christ, whom you are persecuting. And this he now says to the Samaritan woman: I am he, the one speaking to you. At this, the disciples come, and find him talking with the woman; And they marveled that he was talking with a woman. He who is worshiped by the angels was conversing with a prostitute; he who reigns together with the Father an endless kingdom, was speaking alone with the lone woman. But she, leaving her water pot, went into the city. She left the water pot, since she was filled with the living waters, and going in to the citizens, she cried out: Come, see a man who told me all things that I ever did: is not this the Christ? Come, see a man. She did not say, ‘Come, see God among men,’ so that she might not seem to be mad to the people, so that people might not say, ‘She is crazy.’ For when did anyone see God walking about? When did anyone see God conversing with men? Come, see a man, who told me all things that I ever did. She rouses them to a desire to come out, and to be caught; as she was caught in the net, so she nets others; from a Jew she herself progressed to the Lord, from a man she leads them by the hand to God. O apostolic prostitute! The prostitute has become more powerful than the apostles. For the apostles, after the whole economy was fulfilled, then began their apostolic proclamations; but the prostitute, even before the Passion and the economy and the resurrection, proclaims the good news of the Christ.

Come, see a man, who told me all things that I ever did. I expose my sins, 59.542 so that I might lead you by the hand; so that you might see God come to men, I parade my evils; and let Christ be worshiped, who does not abhor sinners. Come, see a man, who told me all things that I ever did: is not this the Christ? See the wisdom of a woman, see the good judgment of a prostitute. Christ told her only one sin, that of her fornication, and she, leaving her water pot, ran into the city, saying: Come, see a man, who told me all things that I ever did. She proclaims the one who knows all things, she proclaims more powerfully than the apostles. She did not see him rising from the dead, she did not see Lazarus, four days dead, being called forth from the tomb, she did not see death being shut away, she did not see the sea being bridled by his word, she did not see the one who formed Adam, on the blind man supplying with clay what was lacking from creation, and she was proclaiming the potter in paradise on account of his word. Come, see a man, who told me all things that I ever did. And from that city of the Samaritans many believed in him because of the word of the woman testifying, ‘He told me all things that I ever did.’ Let us also imitate this Samaritan woman, and let us not be ashamed of our own sins, but let us fear God. But now I see the opposite happening; for we do not fear the one who is to judge us, but those who

δʹ. Ἐπὶ τοῦ Κλεώπα ἑαυτὸν τοῖς ἀποστόλοις οὐκ ἀπ εκάλυψεν· ἀλλ' ὅτε

διήνοιξεν αὐτῶν τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς, τότε ἄφαντος ἐγένετο ἀπ' αὐτῶν, ὡς καὶ τοὺς μαθητὰς εἰπεῖν, ὅτι Οὐχὶ ἡ καρδία ἡμῶν καιομένη ἦν ἐν ἡμῖν, ὡς ἐλάλει ἡμῖν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ, ὡς διήνοιγεν ἡμῖν τὰς Γρα φάς; Ἐκείνοις ἑαυτὸν οὐκ ἀπεκάλυψε, καὶ τῇ γυναικὶ λέγει· Ἐγώ εἰμι, ὁ λαλῶν σοι. Ὃ ἐποίησε Παύλῳ μόνῳ, τῷ ἕως τρίτου οὐρανοῦ ἀνελθόντι, τῷ ἁρπαγέντι εἰς τὸν παράδεισον, καὶ ἄῤῥητα ῥήματα ἀκούσαντι, τῷ τὴν οἰκουμένην σαγηνεύσαντι, τοῦτο προλαβὼν καὶ τῇ Σα μαρείτιδι πεποίηκεν. Παύλῳ σαφῶς ἀπεκάλυψεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ λέγων· Σαῦλε, Σαῦλε, τί με διώκεις; Σκλη ρόν σοι πρὸς κέντρα λακτίζειν. Ὁ δὲ Σαῦλος ἀπ εκρίθη λέγων· Τίς εἶ, Κύριε; Ὁ δὲ ἀπεκρίθη· Ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς, ὃν σὺ διώκεις. Τοῦτο δὲ νῦν τῇ Σαμαρείτιδι λέγει· Ἐγώ εἰμι, ὁ λαλῶν σοι. Ἐπὶ τούτοις ἔρχονται οἱ μαθηταὶ, καὶ εὑρίσκουσιν αὐτὸν ὁμιλοῦντα τῇ γυναικί· Καὶ ἐθαύμασαν, ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει. Ὁ παρὰ τῶν ἀγγέλων προσκυνούμε νος, μετὰ πόρνης διελέγετο· ὁ μετὰ τοῦ Πατρὸς συμβα σιλεύων βασιλείαν τὴν ἀτελεύτητον, μόνος πρὸς μόνην τὴν γυναῖκα ὡμίλει. Ἀλλ' ἐκείνη τὴν ὑδρίαν ἀφεῖσα, εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν. Ἀφῆκε τὴν ὑδρίαν, ἐπειδὴ ἐν επλήσθη τῶν ζώντων ὑδάτων, καὶ εἰσελθοῦσα πρὸς τοὺς πολίτας, ἐβόα· ∆εῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάν τα, ὅσα ἐποίησα· μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός; ∆εῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον. Οὐκ εἶπε, ∆εῦτε, βλέπετε Θεὸν ἐν ἀν θρώποις, ἵνα μὴ τοῖς ἀνθρώποις δόξῃ παραφρονεῖν, ἵνα μὴ εἴπωσιν ἄνθρωποι, Αὕτη μαίνεται. Πότε γὰρ εἶδέ τις Θεὸν περιπατοῦντα; πότε τις εἶδε Θεὸν μετ' ἀνθρώπων συν αναστρεφόμενον; ∆εῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησα. ∆ιεγείρει αὐτοὺς πρὸς ἐπιθυμίαν ἐξελθεῖν, καὶ θηρευθῆναι· ὡς ἐσαγηνεύθη, σαγηνεύει· ἀπὸ Ἰουδαίου εἰς Κύριον προέκοπτεν αὐτὴ, ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου εἰς Θεὸν χειραγωγεῖ. Ὢ πόρνης ἀποστολικῆς· ἡ πόρνη γέγονε τῶν ἀποστόλων δυνατωτέρα. Οἱ γὰρ ἀπόστολοι μετὰ τὸ πληρωθῆναι πᾶσαν τὴν οἰκονομίαν, τότε τῶν ἀποστολικῶν ἤρξαντο κηρυγμάτων· ἡ δὲ πόρνη καὶ πρὸ τοῦ Πάθους καὶ τῆς οἰκονομίας καὶ τῆς ἀναστάσεως τὸν Χριστὸν εὐαγγελίζεται.

∆εῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησα. Στηλιτεύω τὰ ἐμὰ ἁμαρτή 59.542 ματα, ἵνα ὑμᾶς χειραγωγήσω· ἵνα ὑμεῖς ἴδητε Θεὸν πρὸς ἀνθρώπους παραγενόμενον, ἐκπομπεύω μου τὰ κακά· καὶ προσκυνείσθω Χριστὸς ὁ τοὺς ἁμαρτωλοὺς μὴ βδελυτ τόμενος. ∆εῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησα· μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός; Βλέπε σο φίαν γυναικὸς, βλέπε πόρνης εὐγνωμοσύνην. Ἓν ἁμάρ τημα εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ Χριστὸς μόνον τὸ τῆς πορνείας, κἀ κείνη ἀφεῖσα τὴν ὑδρίαν, ἔδραμεν εἰς τὴν πόλιν, λέγουσα· ∆εῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίη σα. Κηρύττει τὸν εἰδότα τὰ πάντα, κηρύττει τῶν ἀπο στόλων ἰσχυρότερα. Οὐκ εἶδεν αὐτὸν ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν ἐγειρόμενον, οὐκ εἶδε τετραήμερον Λάζαρον ἐκ τοῦ τάφου ἀνακαλούμενον, οὐκ εἶδε θάνατον κλειόμενον, οὐκ εἶδε θάλασσαν τῷ ῥήματι χαλινουμένην, οὐκ εἶδε τὸν πλά σαντα τὸν Ἀδὰμ, ἐπὶ τοῦ τυφλοῦ τὸ ἐλλεῖπον τῆς δημιουρ γίας πηλῷ προσαναπληροῦντα, καὶ τὸν ἐν παραδείσῳ κεραμέα διὰ τὸν λόγον ἀνακηρύττουσα ἦν. ∆εῦτε, ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον, ὃς εἶπέ μοι ἅπαντα ὅσα ἐποίησα. Ἐκ δὲ τῆς πόλεως ἐκείνης τῶν Σαμαρειτῶν πολλοὶ ἐπί στευσαν εἰς αὐτὸν διὰ τὸν λόγον τῆς γυναικὸς μαρ τυρούσης, ὅτι Εἶπέ μοι πάντα, ὅσα ἐποίησα. Μιμη σώμεθα τὴν γυναῖκα ταύτην τὴν Σαμαρεῖτιν καὶ ἡμεῖς, καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς οἰκείοις ἁμαρτήμασι μὴ αἰσχυνώμεθα, ἀλλὰ φοβώμεθα τὸν Θεόν. Νῦν δὲ τὸ ἐναντίον ὁρῶ γινόμενον· τὸν μὲν γὰρ μέλλοντα κρίνειν ἡμᾶς οὐ δεδοίκαμεν, τοὺς δὲ
