of those who labor, and do not increase the laziness of those who are sleeping. For if the many were persuaded that Gehenna does not exist, when will they refrain from wickedness? And where will what is just appear? I do not speak concerning sinners and the just, but concerning sinners and sinners. For this reason one was punished here, while another was not punished, sinning the same things, or even much worse things. For if Gehenna does not exist, he will be able to offer nothing in defense for these things to those who bring charges. Therefore I exhort all of you, having ceased from this satanic laughter, to silence those who speak against these things to you. For the examination even of the smallest things in sins and in right actions will be exact. For we will pay the penalty even for licentious eyes, and for an idle word, and for disorderly laughter, and for simple reviling, and for an evil thought, and we will undergo an accounting for drunkenness; just as again in good things we will receive a reward even for a cup of cold water, and for a good word, and for a single sigh. For give, it says, the sign upon the face of those who groan and are in pain. How then do you dare to say that God, examining our affairs with such exactness, threatened Gehenna simply and at random? Do not, I beseech you, do not, I entreat you, do not destroy yourselves and those who are persuaded by you with these empty hopes. For if you disbelieve our words, examine the Jews, 59.627 Greeks, all the heretics, and all as from one mouth will answer that there will be a judgment and a recompense. But are men not sufficient? Ask also the demons themselves, and you will hear them saying: Why have you come here before the time to torment us? and having gathered all these things together, persuade yourselves not to speak in vain; 59.628 so that you might not learn of Gehenna through experience, but having been brought to your senses from this you may be able to escape those torments, and to attain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion, with the Father and the Holy Spirit, unto the ages of ages. Amen.
