But such a woman, leaping upon her husband's grave and provoking her husband after his death, how could she weep for her husband while smiling at her lover? Let us take thought for good order, O friends, let us honor the oversight of the Holy Spirit, let us hear the scripture, and let us obey the Lord. You surely heard the other day, O friend, what the Lord did when he came to the tomb of Lazarus. You also do the same things as a Christian. And what did the Lord do when he came? Did he weep with measure, or drink wine without measure? Was he deeply moved in spirit after praying, or did he leap about and start a fight? It is surely clear to everyone that he both prayed and wept and was deeply moved in the spirit and troubled himself, offering himself to us as an example of sympathy. Therefore, let us follow after the Lord and hear the scripture which says: Weep for the dead, for the light has failed. It said, Weep, not Celebrate. In church, celebrate; at the grave, weep, and this with measure, as the Lord did for Lazarus. Hear Ecclesiastes saying: A time to weep, and a time to laugh. Why do they stamp their feet upon the grave today, and clash satanic-sounding cymbals, and sing theatrical songs? For have they conquered an enemy, or overthrown a tyrant, that having formed satanic choruses they parade so through the marketplace? O, the absurd deeds! What absurd things do the tomb-drunkards not do today? Today they build tombs architecturally, today they promise to build up the monuments, today they are lavish in their babbling: If I must sell my hair, I will not leave the tomb bare. I do not want the neighbor to pass by here, nor widowers to pass by. And as soon as they depart from the monument, immediately they also cast off the memory. For drunkenness is the destroyer of the best memory, the inventor of unseemly thoughts, the murderer of divine teachings. Therefore let us avoid drunkenness, let us show the Jews to be slanderers, who just now said that the apostles are filled with new wine, let us carry out the teaching of the Lord which says, as we have just heard: If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink; he who believes in me, as the scripture said, out of his belly will flow rivers of living water. Listen with understanding. He taught about living water, not about intoxicating wine. But some will surely say—for a drunkard is not lacking a contradiction—What then? Is wine evil, since you slander it? But if wine is evil, why did our master Christ change the water into wine? Thus, he says, wine is most excellent. Listen with understanding. We do not insult wine, for it is a gift of God, but we abominate drunkenness, for it is a work of the devil. Nevertheless, in addition to what has been said, hear this also; for the discourse is already looking for silence. The Lord did indeed change the water into wine. But nevertheless he did this in Cana of Galilee at the wedding, and not in Bethany of Judea on account of the dead Lazarus. The Lord changed the water into wine, having done this for those who were marrying, and not for those who were mourning Lazarus. Where there was a wedding, he changed water into wine; where there was a dead man, he supplied a tear. And to God who fills all things let us send up glory, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

πραχθέν, μήτε ὁ ῥύπος τῆς ἐσθῆτος τὴν ψυχὴν κηλιδωσάτω. Ἔστι γὰρ καὶ τοῦτο ἐνέργεια τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος· ἔστι γὰρ καὶ ὕδωρ καὶ ἔλαιον καὶ πῦρ. Ἡ δὲ τοιαύτη γυνὴ ἐπάνω τοῦ ἀνδρικοῦ τάφου σκιρτῶσα καὶ μετὰ θάνατον τὸν ἄνδρα παροξύνουσα, πῶς ἂν κλαύσῃ τὸν ἄνδρα τῷ φίλῳ προσγελῶσα; Τῆς εὐταξίας, ὦ φίλοι, φροντίσωμεν, τὴν τοῦ ἁγίου πνεύματος ἐπιστασίαν τιμήσωμεν, τῆς γραφῆς ἀκούσωμεν, καὶ τῷ κυρίῳ πειθαρχήσωμεν. Ἤκουες τῇ προτεραίᾳ πάντως, ὦ φίλε, τί ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος εἰς τὸ μνημεῖον Λαζάρου διεπράξατο. Τὰ ὅμοια καὶ σὺ διαπράττου ὡς Χριστιανός. Τί δὲ ἐλθὼν ὁ κύριος διεπράξατο; Συμμέτρως ἐδάκρυσεν, ἢ ἀμέτρως ᾠνοπότησεν; Ἐνε βριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι προσευξάμενος, ἢ ἐσκίρτησε καὶ μάχην εἰργάσατο; Παντί που δῆλον ὅτι καὶ προσηύξατο καὶ ἐδάκρυσεν καὶ ἐνεβριμήσατο τῷ πνεύματι καὶ ἐτάραξεν ἑαυτὸν συμπαθείας ὑπογραμμὸν ἑαυτὸν ἡμῖν παρεχόμενος. Κατόπιν τοίνυν ἀκολουθήσωμεν τῷ κυρίῳ καὶ τῆς γραφῆς λεγούσης ἀκούσωμεν· Κλαῦσον ἐπὶ νεκρῷ, ὅτι ἐξέλιπε φῶς. Κλαῦσον εἶπεν, οὐχὶ δὲ ἑόρτασον. Ἐν ἐκκλησίᾳ ἑόρτασον, ἐν τῷ τάφῳ Κλαῦσον, καὶ τοῦτο συμμέτρως, ὡς ὁ κύριος τὸν Λάζαρον. Ἄκουε τοῦ Ἐκκλησιαστοῦ λέγοντος· Καιρὸς τοῦ κλαῦσαι καὶ καιρὸς τοῦ γελάσαι. Τί ἐπάνω τοῦ τάφου ποδοκρουστοῦσι σήμερον, καὶ κύμβαλα σατανικόφωνα κινοῦσιν, καὶ ᾄδουσι μέλη θεατρικά; Μὴ γὰρ ἐχθρὸν ἐνίκησαν, ἢ τύραννον κατέστρεψαν, ὅτι χοροὺς σατανικοὺς συστησάμενοι οὕτω διὰ τῆς ἀγορᾶς πομπεύουσιν; Ὢ τῶν ἀτόπων πραγμάτων. Τί τῶν ἀτόπων οὐ διαπράττονται σήμερον οἱ ταφομεθυσταί; Σήμερον τοὺς τάφους ἀρχιτεκτονεύουσιν, σήμερον οἰκοδομεῖν ἐπαγγέλλονται τὰ μνήματα , σήμερον φλυαροῦντες δαψιλεύονται· Ἐὰν δέῃ με τὰς τρίχας μου πωλῆσαι, οὐ μὴ καταλείψω τὸν τάφον ἀτρίχωτον. Οὐ θέλω τὸν γείτονα διοδεύειν ἐντεῦθεν, οὔτε χήρους παρέρχεσθαι. Καὶ μόνον ἀποστῶσι τοῦ μνημείου, εὐθέως καὶ τὴν μνήμην ἀποδύονται. Μέθη γὰρ μνήμης ἀρίστης ἀφανίστρια, ἀσέμνων λογισμῶν ἐπινοήτρια , θεϊκῶν διδαγμάτων καταφονήτρια. Ἐκκλίνωμεν τοίνυν τὴν μέθην, δείξωμεν συκοφάντας τοὺς Ἰουδαίους, τοὺς ἀρτίως εἰρηκότας ὅτι γλεύκους μεμεστωμένοι εἰσὶν οἱ ἀπόστολοι, περαιώσωμεν τὴν τοῦ κυρίου διδασκαλίαν τὴν λέγουσαν, καθὼς ἀρτίως ἠκούσαμεν· Ἐάν τις διψᾷ, ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω· ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ , καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή, ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος. Ἄκουε συνετῶς. Περὶ ὕδατος ζῶντος ἐδίδαξεν, οὐχὶ δὲ περὶ οἴνου μεθύσκοντος. Ἐροῦσι δὲ πάντως τινέςοὐ λείπει γὰρ ἀντιλογία μεθυστῇ· Τί οὖν; Κακὸς ὁ οἶνος, ἐπειδὴ διαβάλλεις τοῦτον; Εἰ δὲ κακὸς ὁ οἶνος, διὰ τί ὁ δεσπότης ἡμῶν Χριστὸς τὸ ὕδωρ εἰς οἶνον μετέβαλεν; Οὕτω φησὶ κάλλιστος ὁ οἶνος ὑπάρχει. Ἄκουε συνετῶς. Οὐ τὸν οἶνον ὑβρίζομεν, θεοῦ γὰρ δῶρόν ἐστιν, ἀλλὰ τὴν μέθην βδελυττόμεθα, διαβόλου γὰρ ἔργον ὑπάρχει. Ὅμως πρὸς τοῖς εἰρημένοις ἄκουε καὶ τοῦτο· ἤδη γὰρ ὁ λόγος τὴν σιωπὴν περιβλέπεται. Μετέβαλε μὲν ὁ κύριος τὸ ὕδωρ εἰς οἶνον. Ἀλλ' ὅμως τοῦτο πεποίηκεν ἐν Κανᾷ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐν τοῖς γάμοις, οὐχὶ δὲ ἐν Βηθανίᾳ τῆς Ἰουδαίας ἐπὶ Λαζάρου τοῦ τεθνεῶτος. Μετέβαλεν ὁ κύριος τὸ ὕδωρ εἰς οἶνον, ἐπὶ τῶν γαμούντων τοῦτο πεποιηκώς, οὐχὶ δὲ ἐπὶ τῶν πενθούντων τὸν Λάζαρον. Ὅπου γάμος, ὕδωρ εἰς οἶνον μετήνεγκεν· ὅπου νεκρός, δάκρυον ἐχορήγησεν. Τῷ δὲ θεῷ τῷ τὰ πάντα πληροῦντι δόξαν ἀναπέμψωμεν, νῦν καὶ ἀεὶ καὶ εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Ἀμήν.
