The people of the Jews, using all sorts of insults and slanders against the Lord; and the devil, taking the soul captive. "He has brought into my reins." Concerning the Lord, the demands made for [his] death, but concerning the soul, the devil, the death-bearing counsels against the soul. "I have become a laughter." The Lord, to the unbelievers; but the soul to the multitudes of demons. "Their song." Instead of, gladness, joy. "He has filled me." For they also gave him gall to drink on the cross; but sin is also the bitterness of the soul. "And he cast out by a decree." The Lord, he says, because he answered nothing to Pilate. But the soul says that the devil by the craftiness of sin has dimmed my senses. "And he has rejected." The people of the Jews, not willing to be at peace with their Savior; but the devil, having removed the soul from the peace of God. "And I said, It has perished." The Savior says these things about the people of the Jews, which was formerly his inheritance and hope of boasting. And the soul also says that, as my sins multiplied, I supposed that there was no recall for me. "I remembered." The Savior says that, remembering my voluntary emptying, and the sufferings which I endured, and having these and keeping them in myself, I endure, so that by long-suffering I might also win the Jews. But from the person of the one who has sinned, you will understand it thus: Of poverty, of the turning; for after the turning the soul is given over to the persecutions of sin. "Of my bitterness." Of the things that happened to me in the land of sin. "And my soul will meditate upon me." Meditating on these things within itself, it will condemn itself. "This I will set." The memory, he says, of the condemnation I will store up in my own heart. "For this reason I will endure." For he who knows that he has sinned by choice, endures the discipline of God, and the mercy from him. "And he will endure." Certainly, he says, he will hope in the help of Christ and Savior. For he himself is the salvation of the Lord, according to Simeon who says: For my eyes have seen your salvation. "He will sit alone." The discipline for youthful deeds. "He will sit." He abides in the truth; for this 93.748 is one, but sin is many, and has many parts. "And he will be silent." Instead of, he will cease from such a way. "Because he has taken up." The yoke, that is. "He will give to the one who strikes." According to the one who said: If someone strikes you on the right [cheek], turn to him the other also. But with respect to the mind, to the reproof according to God. "He will be filled." In this age, so that not in the one to come. "And he did not answer." Not he himself, he says, prepared Adam to sin, and those from him; for God did not legislate sin, but we endured the turning by our own choice. "To humble." The word is connected with what is above; that God declared [perhaps: did not declare] for the adversary to be humbled under his feet [perhaps: of the adversary]. And the prisoners of the earth, that is, those bound by the chains of their own sins. "To turn aside judgment." To turn the faculty of judgment to opposing the Most High. "To condemn." God, he says, did not command, so as to be condemned by the adversary when being judged before him. "Who has so spoken?" The way of disobedience, and the sower of deceit. "From the mouth." But only the good. "If a man will murmur." Let no one, he says, blame God as the cause of sin, because man, having sinned by his own choice, is also able to repent; and the excuses are vain. "It was searched out." For the Judge is unerring. "Upon our hands." That is, having lightened our souls of earthly things, let us offer them to God; as if bringing our own souls as a certain offering through our deeds. "We have sinned." Since we have provoked, you were not propitiated, instead of, We have suffered justly. "You have covered." You have covered over, he says, like the clouds, so that prayer does not pass through to you. "To close my eyes." The turning away, he says, of your face has worked an absence of light for me, and as for those who close their eyes, darkness came upon me. "You have placed us in the midst of the peoples." Of perceptible, or of intelligible ones, on account of sins

Κατὰ μὲν τοῦ Κυρίου, τὰς εἰς θάνατον ἐξαιτηθεὶς [ἐξαιτήσεις], κατὰ δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς ὁ διάβολος, τὰς κατὰ τῆς ψυχῆς θανατηφόρους συμβουλάς. "Ἐγενήθη γέλως." Ὁ μὲν Κύριος, τῷ τῶν ἀπίστων· ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ τοῖς τῶν δαιμόνων πλήθεσιν. "Ψαλμὸς αὐτῶν." Ἀντὶ τοῦ, εὐφροσύνη, χαρά. "Ἐχόρτασέ με." Καὶ γὰρ χολὴν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ σταυρῷ ἐπότισαν· πικρία δὲ καὶ τῆς ψυχῆς ἡ ἁμαρτία. "Καὶ ἐξέβαλε ψήφῳ." Ὁ μὲν Κύριος, φησὶν, διὰ τὸ μηδὲν Πιλάτῳ ἀποκρίνασθαι. Ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ λέγει, ὅτι Ὁ διάβολος τῇ πανουργίᾳ τῇ τῆς ἁμαρτίας τὰ αἰσθητήριά μου ἐξημαύρωσεν. "Καὶ ἀπώσατο." Ὁ μὲν Ἰουδαίων λαὸς, μὴ θελήσας εἰρηνεῦσαι πρὸς τὸν ἑαυτοῦ Σωτῆρα· ὁ δὲ διάβολος, ἐκ τῆς εἰρήνης τοῦ Θεοῦ τὴν ψυχὴν ἀποστήσας. "Καὶ εἶπα, Ἀπώλετο." Ταῦτα ὁ Σωτὴρ περὶ τοῦ Ἰουδαίων λαοῦ φησὶν, ὃς πρότερον κληρονομία αὐτοῦ ἦν, καὶ ἐλπὶς καυχήματος. Φησὶν δὲ καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ, ὅτι Πληθυνθεισῶν μου τῶν ἁμαρτιῶν ὑπενόησα τὴν ἀνάκλησίν μου μὴ εἶναι. "Ἐμνήσθην." Ὁ Σωτήρ φησιν, ὅτι Μνησθεὶς τῆς ἑκουσίου κενώσεώς μου, καὶ τῶν παθῶν, ὧν ὑπέμεινα, καὶ ταῦτα ἔχων, καὶ φυλάττων ἐν ἐμαυτῷ, ὑπομένω, ἵνα τῇ μακροθυμίᾳ καὶ τοὺς Ἰουδαίους κερδήσω. Ἐκ δὲ τοῦ προσώπου τοῦ ἁμαρτήσαντος οὕτω νοήσεις· Πτωχείας, τῆς τροπῆς· μετὰ γὰρ τὴν τροπὴν διωγμοῖς ἁμαρτίας παραδίδοται ἡ ψυχή. "Πικρίας μου." Τῶν συμβάντων μοι ἐν τῇ χώρᾳ τῆς ἁμαρτίας. "Καὶ καταδολεσχήσει ἐπ' ἐμὲ ἡ ψυχή μου." Ταῦτα ἐν ἑαυτῇ μελετῶσα καταγνώσεται ἑαυτῆς. "Ταύτην τάξω." Τὴν μνήμην, φησὶ, τῆς καταγνώσεως ἐναποθήσομαι τῇ ἐμαυτοῦ καρδίᾳ. "∆ιὰ τοῦτο ὑπομενῶ." Ὁ γὰρ εἰδὼς, ὅτι ἐκ προαιρέσεως ἥμαρτεν, ὑπομένει τοῦ Θεοῦ τὴν παιδείαν, καὶ τὸν ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔλεον. "Καὶ ὑπομενεῖ." Βεβαίως, φησὶν, ἐλπίσει εἰς τὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ Σωτῆρος βοήθειαν. Καὶ αὐτὸς γάρ ἐστι τὸ σωτήριον τοῦ Κυρίου κατὰ τὸν Συμεὼν λέγοντα· Ὅτι εἶδον οἱ ὀφθαλμοί μου τὸ σωτήριόν σου. "Καθήσεται κατὰ μόνας." Τὸ τῶν νεωτερικῶν πράξεων παιδευτήριον. "Καθήσεται." Ἐμμένει τῇ ἀληθείᾳ· αὕτη γὰρ 93.748 μόνη ἐστὶν, ἡ δὲ ἁμαρτία πολλὴ, καὶ πολυμερής. "Καὶ σιωπήσεται." Ἀντὶ τοῦ, καταπαύσει τὸν τοιοῦτον τρόπον. "Ὅτι ἦρεν." Τὸν ζυγὸν δηλονότι. "∆ώσει τῷ παίοντι." Κατὰ τὸν εἰρηκότα· Ἐάν τις ῥαπίσῃ εἰς τὴν δεξιὰν, στρέψον αὐτῷ καὶ τὴν ἄλλην. Πρὸς δὲ διάνοιαν, τῷ κατὰ Θεοῦ ἐλεγμῷ. "Χορτασθήσεται." Ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ, ἵνα μὴ ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι. "Καὶ οὐκ ἀπεκρίθη." Οὐκ αὐτὸς, φησὶν, ἁμαρτῆσαι παρεσκεύασεν τὸν Ἀδὰμ, καὶ τοὺς ἐξ αὐτοῦ· οὐ γὰρ ἁμαρτίαν ὁ Θεὸς ἐνομοθέτησεν, ἀλλὰ προαιρετικῶς τὴν τροπὴν ὑπεμείναμεν. "Τοῦ ταπεινῶσαι." Ὁ λόγος τοῦ ἄνω ἔχεται· ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς ἀπεφήνατο [ἴσ. οὐκ ἀπεφ.] ταπεινωθῆναι ὑπὸ τοὺς πόδας τὸν ἐναντίον [ἴσ. τοῦ ἐναντίου]. Τοὺς δὲ δεσμίους τῆς γῆς, τουτέστιν τοὺς ταῖς σειραῖς τῶν ἑαυτῶν ἁμαρτιῶν δεδεμένους. "Τοῦ ἐκκλῖναι κρίσιν." Τοῦ τρέψαι τὸ κριτικὸν εἰς τὸ ἐναντιοῦσθαι τῷ Ὑψίστῳ. "Καταδικάσαι." Ὁ Θεὸς, φησὶν, οὐ προσέταξεν, ὥστε κατακρίνεσθαι ἐκ τοῦ ἐναντίου ἐν τῷ δικάζεσθαι πρὸς αὐτόν. "Τίς οὕτως εἶπε;" Ὁ τῆς παρακοῆς τρόπος, καὶ ὁ τῆς ἀπάτης σπορεύς. "Ἐκ στόματος." Ἀλλὰ μόνον τὸ ἀγαθόν. "Εἰ γογγύσει ἄνθρωπος." Μηδεὶς, φησὶ, μεμφέσθω ὡς αἴτιον ἁμαρτίας τὸν Θεὸν, διότι προαιρετικῶς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτὼν, δύναται καὶ μετανοῆσαι· καὶ μάταιαι αἱ προφάσεις. "Ἐξηρευνήθη." Ἀλάθητος γὰρ ὁ Κριτής. "Ἐπὶ χειρῶν ἡμῶν." Τουτέστιν, ἐκ τῶν γηΐνων τὰς ψυχὰς ἀνακουφίσαντες, προσενέγκωμεν Θεῷ· ὥσπερ τινὰ προσφορὰν διὰ τῶν πράξεων τὰς ἑαυτῶν ψυχὰς προσενεγκόντες. "Ἡμαρτήσαμεν." Ἐπειδὴ παρεπικράναμεν, οὐχ ἱλάσθης, ἀντὶ τοῦ, ∆ίκαια πεπόνθαμεν. "Ἐπεσκέπασας." Κατεκάλυψας, φησὶν, ὥσπερ τὰ νέφη, τοῦ μὴ διελθεῖν πρὸς σὲ τὴν προσευχήν. "Καμμύσαι με." Ἡ ἀποστροφὴ, φησὶ, τοῦ προσώπου σου ἀπουσίαν φωτός μοι εἰργάσατο, καὶ ὥσπερ τοῖς καμμύουσιν σκότος μοι ἐπεγένετο. "Ἔθηκας ἡμᾶς ἐν μέσῳ τῶν λαῶν." Αἰσθητῶν, ἢ νοητῶν, διὰ τὴν ἐξ ἁμαρτιῶν
