having caught the inhabited world with the hook and the dragnet of the word, they drew it up from the depth of idolatry and brought it safely to the harbor of the kingdom of heaven. For the sake of this the martyrs poured out their own blood, that they might not lose Christ. For this our God-bearing fathers and teachers of the world eagerly laid down their own souls for the catholic and apostolic Church; and we, the humble, have come under the protection of you our most honorable fathers and brothers, (27) so that, imitating them in everything as far as possible, we might both suffer and endure for your sake and bring it to completion for your edification and benefit, that we may present you as perfect sacrifices, rational whole burnt offerings, at the table of God. For you are the children of God, whom God has given me as little children, my own bowels, my own eyes. You are, to speak apostolically, my boast and the seal of my teaching.
Let us be zealous then, my beloved brothers in Christ, just as through all things, so also through love for one another to serve God and him whom you have chosen to have as a type of a spiritual father, even if I fall far short of his worth, so that God may rejoice in your unanimity and perfection, and I, the humble one, may also rejoice, always seeing the progress of your life according to God being extended for the better in faith, in purity, in the fear of God, in reverence, in compunction and tears, through which the inner man is cleansed and is filled with divine light and becomes entirely of the Holy Spirit in a contrite soul and a humbled mind, and my joy becomes a blessing for you and an increase of imperishable and blessed life in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory for ever. Amen.
Concerning fleeing the pestilent and corrupting of men and sending away their words and rising up to the work of virtue. And further, concerning the need to examine if we have the beatitudes of
Christ in ourselves. And concerning tears and compunction.
Discourse II. (28) Brothers and fathers, whoever wishes to find God, let him deny himself
and not spare his own soul, but let him set enmity between himself and between all those who walk according to the flesh. Let him not turn to the supposedly encouraging words of any of these, and let him not sit with them in a seat, nor speak evil conversations, through which the soul is poisoned and is forced to dwell in its former wicked thoughts and reflections. O man, fear the bait with a hook and listen to me and stay far from them. Do not again bring your soul down into Hades. Stop your thought and do not allow it to wander to hear vain things. Do not turn back, do not hesitate or be weighed down with sloth, do not give sleep to your eyes nor sweeten your throat with the pleasure of any food, until you see that for which and because of which you were called and toward which you are hastening to arrive according to your purpose. Do not accept the thought that suggests to you: (29) "What need have you," it says, "of so much toil and unseasonable hardship? You have already completed two and three years, and you have known no benefit." No, my brother, do not be caught in this trap, nor betray your own salvation, but rather use a more vigorous zeal and courage for the work of the virtues, not disbelieving the words and teachings of your fathers according to God. Therefore, determine in your soul to die first rather than to fall away
