THE LOVES OF THE DIVINE HYMNS
OF OUR HOLY AND GREAT FATHER
SYMEON THE NEW THEOLOGIAN,
WHO WAS ABBOT AND PRESBYTER
OF THE MONASTERY OF SAINT MAMAS
OF XEROKERKOS. (25) The table of the divine loves a. Concerning the divine radiance and illumination of the Holy Spirit; and that God is one place, in which after their fate all the Saints have their rest; and that he who falls away from God will not have rest in another place in the life to come.
b. What was the change that took place in this father and how, having been purified to the utmost, he was united to God and what he became from what he was, his loving words to God declare from this point; who also, theologizing, speaks at the end concerning angels.
c. Who the monk is and what his work is; and to what height of contemplation this divine father ascended.
d. Instruction for monks who have just renounced the world and the things in the world; and concerning what sort of faith one ought to have towards one’s own father.
e. An alphabet of the same, in double letter-form, exhorting and guiding one who has just departed from the world to run up to perfection of life.
f. Quatrains of the same, from this point showing his love for God. g. A prayer of the same to God; and how, being joined to God (26) and the glory of God working in him, he was astonished. h. To whom God reveals Himself and who come into possession of the good through the working of the
commandments. i. That he who has become a partaker of the Holy Spirit, being seized by its light and power, is carried above all passions, not being harmed by their approach.
j. That death afflicts with grief even the stronger. k. How God was seen by him as by Stephen and Paul the apostles, here the father, being astonished, relates.
l. Theology concerning the one in all things of the tri-hypostatic divinity; and through the things he says about himself, using humility, he shames the conceit of those who think they are something.
m. Exhortation to repentance; and how the will of the flesh, united to the will of the Spirit, makes man godlike.
