Jesus Christ, and to keep His commandments and to do them and to abstain from every evil thing; for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad; for the fashion of this world is passing away and the Lord is about to come from heaven to judge the living and the dead. Therefore do not be negligent, knowing that at an hour you do not expect, our Lord is coming. Endure hardship, therefore, and in hope strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord has drawn near.Remember all that I have spoken to you, saying that the things of this present life are short-lived, whether the good or the painful, and all things will quickly pass away, but all things of the age to come are likewise eternal and unending; for neither will the kingdom of heaven ever pass away, nor does judgment have an end, but it remains forever, punishing sinners immortally and unceasingly. Be diligent, therefore, that you may be found blameless and spotless on that day, so that you do not fall into that immortal and unending Gehenna. Remember the signs and wonders that God performed among you through me, His servant, and pray for me; for I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure is at hand, as our Lord Jesus Christ has revealed to me. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith, now there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, and not only for me, but also for all who strive for His name."
And having said these things, he prayed with all of them; and there was much weeping among all, because the apostle had said that the time of my departure is at hand. And Barnabas, taking bread and a cup, and performing the whole rite, partook with the brethren of the Eucharist of the mysteries. And after these things, taking Mark and withdrawing privately, he said to him: "On this day I must be perfected at the hands of the unbelieving Jews; but you, going out of the city to the west, will find my body; and having buried it, depart from Cyprus and go to Paul and be with him, until the Lord shall arrange matters concerning you; for your name is to be magnified in all the inhabited world."After these things, Barnabas entered the synagogue and was teaching the Jews, persuading them concerning the Lord Jesus, that this is the Christ, the Son of the living God. But the Jews from Syria, filled with anger, rose up and laid hands on him and put him in a dark room in the synagogue until late evening; and bringing him out and torturing him sufficiently, they led him by night outside the city, and there the lawless ones stoned him; and having lit a great fire, they threw the blessed one there so that not even a remnant of him might be found. But by the providence of God, the body of the apostle remained unharmed, and the fire did not injure it at all. And Mark, according to what had been commanded him, going out of the city to the west with some brethren in secret, collected the relic of Saint Barnabas and, having buried it in a cave about five stadia from the city, they departed, making great lamentation over him.
And it happened at that time that a great persecution arose against the church in Salamis, and all were scattered, one here, another there; and from then on, the tomb of the holy apostle Barnabas became unknown. But Mark, sailing from the land of the Cypriots, came to Paul in Ephesus and announced to him concerning the perfection of Barnabas; and when he heard, he wept with great weeping for him, and kept Mark with him. And after these things, when Peter, by a revelation of God, was setting out for Rome, he took Mark with him, in a way making him his son; there he composed the evangelical history; which Peter, having read and
