Therefore the longed-for is returned to those who long for him, the child-loving father to his most faithful children, the all-wise teacher to his subjects, the protector to the orphans, the one who advocates freely for the wronged, the great helper to the abused, to those often enslaved by pleasures, the one who gives wings to their desire toward God, to those who have slipped into the pit of wickedness, the guide of repentance, to those overcome by satiety and luxury, the model of self-control, the one who everywhere has mastery over all things, the one who, by common consent, carried away from all the prize in all things, the one falling short of none before him in every kind of virtue and learning, the one who allowed none after him to come near to him, but rather to be left far behind by his surpassing virtue, the one who left no depth of the hidden mysteries of God unexamined, the one who marvelously opened up and unfolded the entire depth of Scripture and, as it were, brought it to light and truly transcribed it threefold. My heart blooms and my mind wells up 317 and desires to celebrate and yearns rather to speak. But come, all you who have partaken of his good things and who admire his works, complete with me for him this funeral song of hymns. You emperors, him who brightens your souls more with the all-golden streams of his tongue than the flower of purple brightens the body, and the beauty of pearls and the diadem of precious stones. You priests, the straight rule of the high-priestly state, you men of letters, him who eclipsed all sweet discourse in all things. You who are rich, the best steward of your stored-up and surplus wealth. You who are poor, the provider of necessities and the one who looses the bonds of poverty. You who are in mourning, your comfort, you in misfortunes, your consolation, you who through despair have been dashed down to the abyss of perdition, your recall. The one who became all things to all men, to speak according to Paul, the great apostle, that he might win all or most of them. Therefore from this irrigated meadow of the goods of the soul let us gather the roses of virtue and love, most sweetly from the soul and from burning affection supplying praises and speaking and at the same time naming him thus: a mighty shelter and a fortified palace, a living treasure of friendship, a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed, and a paradise of delight, opened and closed at the right time, a harbor of calm and of refreshment for those troubled by storms, the ever-flowing provider of golden and pure doctrines. Behold the graces of Chrysostom, behold the rewards of his labors. Remember all his sweetest and most pleasant teachings. I know this and I am conscious that you will always remember, and what affection you have for our common father and benefactor, and how you are dependent on this affection and love, and that you breathe and are refreshed by this alone. Behold how I am a partaker both of the zeal and of the love for this wondrous and praiseworthy father and teacher, and would that we might become obedient to the sacred labors which he sets before us through his divinely inspired oracles, and to his most temperate way of life. And may it be so, O Master of mercy and Lord of all consolation, and may the whole world, and we before all, possess this one joy, the common hope, the inalienable exultation, the blameless, soul-nourishing memory, whom if we do not honor and love and hold fast to his saving teaching, what other shall we cherish, or whom of the better men who lead us to zeal for virtue shall we follow, or through whom shall we find the good things for which we hope? Yes, most fortunate children of a noble and venerable commonwealth of the blessed city

Οἱ βασιλεῖς τὸν λαμπρύνοντα μᾶλλον ὑμῶν τὰς ψυχὰς τοῖς ὁλοχρύσοις ῥείθροις τῆς γλώσσης αὐτοῦ ἢ τὸ σῶμα τὸ τῆς πορφύρας ἄνθος καὶ τῶν μαργάρων τὸ κάλλος καὶ τὸ ἐκ λίθων τιμίων διάδημα. Οἱ ἱερεῖς τὸν εὐθὺν κανόνα τῆς ἀρχιερατικῆς καταστάσεως, οἱ περὶ λόγους τὸν ἐν πᾶσι λόγων ἡδέα πάντα ἀποκρυψάμενον. Οἱ πλούσιοι τὸν ἄριστον οἰκονόμον τῶν ἀποθέτων ὑμῖν χρημάτων καὶ περιττῶν. Οἱ πένητες τὸν ποριστὴν τῶν ἀναγκαίων καὶ τὴν ἔνδειαν λύοντα. Οἱ ἐν πένθει τὴν παραμυθίαν, τὴν παράκλησιν οἱ ἐν συμφοραῖς, τὴν ἀνάκλησιν οἱ τῇ ἀπογνώσει πρὸς ἀπωλείας κατερραγμένοι βυθόν. Τὸν πάντα γεγονότα τοῖς πᾶσι κατὰ Παῦλον εἰπεῖν, τὸν μέγαν ἀπόστολον, ἵνα κερδήσῃ τοὺς πάντας ἢ πλείονας. Τοίνυν ἀπὸ τοῦ καταρρύτου τούτου λειμῶνος τῶν τῆς ψυχῆς ἀγαθῶν τὰ ῥόδα τῆς ἀρετῆς καὶ ἀγάπης τρυγήσωμεν ὡς ἥδιστα ἐκ ψυχῆς καὶ φίλτρου περικαοῦς ἐπιχορηγοῦντες τὰς εὐφημίας καὶ λέγοντες ἅμα καὶ οὕτω κατονομάζοντες σκέπην κραταιὰν καὶ ὠχυρωμένων βασίλειον, φιλίας κειμήλιον ἔμψυχον, κῆπον κεκλεισμένον, πηγὴν ἐσφραγισμένην παράδεισόν τε τρυφῆς, εὐκαίρως ἀνοιγόμενον τε καὶ συγκλειόμενον, λιμένα γαλήνης τοῖς ὑπὸ καταιγίδων ταραττομένοις καὶ ἀναψύξεως, τῶν χρυσῶν δογμάτων καὶ ἀκηράτων τὸν ἀέναον χορηγόν. Ὁρᾶτε τοῦ Χρυσοστόμου τὰ χάριτας, ὁρᾶτε τῶν αὐτοῦ πόνων τὰ γέρα. Μέμνησθε πάντων τῶν γλυκυτάτων αὐτοῦ καὶ ἡδίστων διδαχῶν. Οἶδα τοῦτο καὶ σύνοιδα μεμνησομένους ἀεὶ καὶ οἷον ὑμῖν τὸ φίλτρον περὶ τὸν κοινὸν πατέρα καὶ εὐεργέτην καὶ ὡς ἐξήρτησθε τοῦ φίλτρου τούτου καὶ τῆς ἀγάπης καὶ τοῦτο μόνον πνεῖτε καὶ ἀναψύχεσθε. Ὁρᾶτε οἷος ἐγὼ κοινωνῶν καὶ τοῦ ζήλου καὶ τῆς ἀγάπης τοῦ θαυμασίου τούτου καὶ ἀξιεπαίνου πατρὸς καὶ διδασκάλου, εἴθε δὲ καὶ τῶν ἱερῶν πόνων ὧν ἡμῖν διὰ τῶν αὑτοῦ θεοπνεύστων λογίων ὑποτίθεται καὶ τῆς σωφρονεστέρας διαγωγῆς ὑπηκόους γενέσθαι. Καὶ γένοιτο, δέσποτα τοῦ ἐλέους καὶ πάσης παρακλήσεως Κύριε, καὶ πάντα τὸν κόσμον καὶ πρὸ πάντων ἡμᾶς τοῦτο μόνον κεκτῆσθαι χαράν, τὴν κοινὴν ἐλπίδα, τὸ ἀναφαίρετον ἀγαλλίαμα, τὴν ἀνεπίληστον μνήμην, τὴν ψυχοτρόφον, ὃν εἰ μὴ τιμῶμεν καὶ ἀγαπῶμεν καὶ τῆς σωζούσης διδασκαλίας τούτου ἐχώμεθα, τίνα ἄλλον στέρξομεν ἢ τίνι τῶν κρειττόνων καὶ εἰς ζῆλον ἀρετῆς ἀναγόντων ἑψόμεθα ἢ διὰ τίνος εὑρήσομεν τὰ ἐλπιζόμενα ἀγαθά; Ναὶ τέκνα πολιτείας εὐγενοῦς τε καὶ φιλοσέμνου τῆς εὐδαίμονος πόλεως εὐτυχέστατα
