13 Concerning the calling of the disciples.

But when indeed he reached the measure of glorious youth, then indeed he chose twelve best companions; for they seemed to him to be eminently the best, who would honor him in their heart as a god; for these were the called among mortals upon the boundless earth after him, among the others; and he was pre-eminent even among all. Having gathered them, he devised a wise plan: "Hear me, you suitors of the renowned kingdom, so that I may say what my spirit bids me in my breast; for I will not prophesy without experience, but as one who knows the sign well; for my word is not to be taken back nor is it deceitful. And I myself claim to be of a good father's lineage, the protector of strangers, who especially resents evil deeds; for I am his son; and he avows himself to be my father. For this reason he sent me forth, to teach all these things. We two indeed know the hidden signs of all things; and we know whatever happens on the all-nourishing earth, both the fate and the misfortune of mortal men, watching over both the insolence and the good order of men. But you too obey, since it is better to obey, us, because we are harmless guides of all, three, turning every way, sprung from one neck, of like age, bearing equally, whose strength is not feeble, whose virtue and honor and might are even greater than all things, whatever both breathes and creeps upon the earth and the shadowy mountains and the resounding sea." So saying he stirred the spirit and heart of each. He went to go ahead, and with his other hand he took Peter, who was the dearest of his companions. And he also led three others, whom he trusted most for every straight course, so that they might of their own accord witness the divine contest. And those were chosen whom he himself would have wished to choose, men of the sea, for whom the works of the sea were a concern.

13 Περὶ τῆς κλήσεως τῶν μαθητῶν.

Ἀλλ' ὅτε δή ῥ' ἥβης ἐρικυδέος ἵκετο μέτρον, καὶ τότε δὴ κρίνας ἑτάρων

δυοκαίδεκ' ἀρίστους· οἱ γάρ οἱ εἴσαντο διακριδὸν εἶναι ἄριστοι, οἵ κέν μιν περὶ κῆρι θεὸν ὣς τιμήσαντο· οὗτοι γὰρ κλητοί γε βροτῶν ἐπ' ἀπείρονα γαῖαν τῶν ἄλλων μετά γ' αὐτόν· ὁ δ' ἔπρεπε καὶ διὰ πάντων. τοὺς ὅγε ἀθροίσας πυκινὴν ἠρτύνετο μῆτιν· «κέκλυτέ μευ, μνηστῆρες ἀγακλειτῆς βασιλείης, ὄφρ' εἴπω, τά με θυμὸς ἐνὶ στήθεσσιν ἀνώγει· οὐ γὰρ ἀπειρήτως μαντεύσομαι, ἀλλ' εὖ εἰδὼς τέκμωρ· οὐ γὰρ ἐμὸν παλινάγρετον οὐδ' ἀπατηλόν. πατρὸς δ' ἐξ ἀγαθοῦ καὶ ἐγὼ γένος εὔχομαι εἶναι, ξεινίου, ὅστε μάλιστα νεμεσσᾶται κακὰ ἔργα· τοῦ γὰρ ἐγὼ πάις εἰμί· πατὴρ δ' ἐμὸς εὔχεται εἶναι. τοὔνεκά με προέηκε, διδασκέμεναι τάδε πάντα. σήματα δὴ καὶ νῶι κεκρυμμένα ἴδμεν ἁπάντων· ἴδμεν δ' ὅσσα γένηται ἐπὶ χθονὶ πουλυβοτείρῃ, μοῖράν τ' ἀμμορίην τε καταθνητῶν ἀνθρώπων, ἀνθρώπων ὕβριν τε καὶ εὐνομίην ἐφορῶντες. ἀλλὰ πίθεσθε καὶ ὔμμες, ἐπεὶ πείθεσθαι ἄμεινον, ἡμῖν, οὕνεκα πομποὶ ἀπήμονές εἰμεν ἁπάντων, τρεῖς, ἀμφιστρεφέες, ἑνὸς αὐχένος ἐκπεφυῶτες, ἥλικες, ἰσοφόροι, τῶν τε σθένος οὐκ ἀλαπαδνόν, τῶν περ καὶ μείζων ἀρετὴ τιμή τε βίη τε πάντων, ὅσσα τε γαῖαν ἔπι πνείει τε καὶ ἕρπει οὔρεά τε σκιόεντα θάλασσά τε ἠχήεσσα.» ὣς εἰπὼν ὤτρυνε μένος καὶ θυμὸν ἑκάστου. βῆ δ' ἴμεναι προτέρως, ἑτέρηφι δὲ λάζετο Πέτρον, ὅς οἱ κεδνότατος ἑτάρων ἦν. ἠδὲ καὶ ἄλλους τρεῖς ἄγεν, οἷσι μάλιστα πεποίθεε πᾶσαν ἐπ' ἰθύν, ὄφρα οἱ αὐτόματοι θεῖον δυσαίατ' ἀγῶνα. οἱ δ' ἔλαχον, τοὺς ἂν καὶ ἤθελεν αὐτὸς ἑλέσθαι, εἰνάλιοι, τοῖσίν τε θαλάσσια ἔργα μέμηλεν.
