having been intertwined on the tenth of the month, found its nature, and a month completed the period of the sun with twelve turnings, from which the cycles of years and changes of seasons gave form to the formless and unshaped age, as if with the variety of a many-flowered painting, for the rest and delight of those who ride through the course of life in it. 6.6 For just as for those who complete their races in a contest in hope of prizes the distances are marked by stadia, and for those traveling on long journeys the main road is defined by certain stages and signs, so that no one, by stretching out his expectation indefinitely, might grow weary in his zeal, in this same way, the King of all, having encompassed the entire age with the ordinances of wisdom, leads and directs it, variously driving it as seems good to him. And he, clothing the formerly unadorned age with beautiful colors and fresh flowers, brightened the white day with the sun, and having spread the night beneath with a darker color, he made the radiances of the stars shine in it like some gold-woven specks, and having kindled the bright rays of the morning star and the varied lights of the moon and the brilliant assemblies of the stars, he crowned the whole heaven, like a great robe, with the beauties of every kind of painting. And having stretched out the air to its depth from on high, and having animated the breadths and lengths of the whole cosmos with its power, he allowed all birds to be formed, spreading out a great sea for those borne through the air, both unseen and seen, to swim through. And having balanced the earth in the middle like a center, he surrounded it with the Ocean and the sea upon it gleams emerald, being beautified by the dark blue color of its surrounding. 6.7 And having designated it as the hearth and mother and nurse of all living creatures in it, and having watered it with streams of rain and from springs, he granted it to be green with all kinds of plants and beautiful flowers for the cheerful enjoyment of life. And having formed in it the most honorable of living creatures and the one dear to him, according to his own image, endowed with mind and knowledge, an offspring of reason and wisdom, rational man, he gave him the power to rule with authority over the rest of the things that creep and graze upon the earth. For man was to him the most beloved of God of the creatures on the earth, to whom, like a father, he delivered the races of irrational animals to serve, man, for whom he also made the sea navigable and crowned the earth with all kinds of plants, for whom also the creatures creeping in the depths and the birds on high have been made subject, to whom he also granted scientific faculties for the reception of all kinds of learning, for whom he also revealed the heavenly contemplations, making known the courses of the sun and the turnings of the moon and the periods of the planets and fixed stars, man, for whom alone of those on earth he ordained to know the heavenly Father and to honor the great King of the whole age with hymns. 6.8 But indeed, in addition to all these things, the maker of the cosmos girded the unchanging age with four turnings of the year, defining the winter hours by spring, and spring, the beginning of the yearly seasons, he balanced with equal scales, and then, having crowned the whole age with the fruitfulness of spring, he handed it over to the height of summer, then, as if giving it rest from toil, he recovered it in the autumnal interval, and washing it with the moist downpours of winter rains like some royal horse and making it brilliant with the streams from it, and having fattened it sufficiently with irrigations from the rains, he again places it at the front gates of spring. 6.9 From here, then, in the cycle of the whole year, with such reins of wisdom, the great King, having thus bound his age, ordained it to be borne by a greater pilot, by his only-begotten Word, the common Savior of all, having handed over the reins of the universe. And he, having received the inheritance from a good Father, and at the same time all things that the vault of heaven contains, having embraced both what is within and without it, binding them together in one harmony, he accomplishes directly, with justice the things that are fitting for those of his on earth

συμπλακεῖσα δεκάτῃ μηνὸς ἀνεῦρε φύσιν, μὴν δὲ τροπαῖς δώδεκα ἡλίου περίοδον ἐπλήρου, ἔνθεν ἐνιαυτῶν κύκλοι καιρῶν τε μεταβολαὶ τὸν ἄμορφον καὶ ἀνείδεον αἰῶνα, ὥσπερ ἐν ποικιλίᾳ γραφῆς πολυανθοῦς, ἐμόρφουν εἰς ἀνάπαυλαν καὶ θυμηδίαν τῶν ἐν αὐτῷ τὸν τῆς ζωῆς διϊππευόντων δρόμον. 6.6 ὡς γὰρ καὶ τοῖς ἐπ' ἐλπίδι βραβείων ἐν ἀγῶνι τοὺς δρόμους διεξανύουσι σταδίοις ὥρισται τὰ διαστήματα, τοῖς τε μακρὰς πορείας ὁδοιποροῦσι σταθμοῖς τισι καὶ σημείοις περιγράφεται ἡ λεωφόρος, ὡς ἂν μὴ εἰς ἄπειρόν τις τὴν προσδοκίαν ἐκτείνων ἀποκάμοι τὴν προθυμίαν, τὸν αὐτὸν δὴ τρόπον καὶ τὸν σύμπαντα αἰῶνα σοφίας θεσμοῖς ὁ τῶν ὅλων βασιλεὺς περιβαλὼν ἄγει καὶ φέρει, ποικίλως ἡνιοχῶν ᾗ καλῶς ἔχειν αὐτῷ καταφαίνεται. ὁ δ' αὐτὸς χρώμασιν ὡραίοις καὶ νεαροῖς ἄνθεσι τὸν πρὶν ἀσχημάτιστον ἀμφιεννὺς αἰῶνα, λευκὴν μὲν ἐφαίδρυνεν ἡμέραν ἡλίῳ, νύκτα δ' ὑποστρώσας μελαντέρῳ χρώματι ὥσπερ τινὰ χρυσοϋφῆ ψήγματα στίλβειν ἐν αὐτῇ τὰς τῶν ἀστέρων λαμπηδόνας ἐποίησε, φωσφόρου δ' ἐξάψας λαμπρὰς ἀκτῖνας σελήνης τε ποικίλα φέγγη ἄστρων τε συνόδους πολυαυγεῖς τὸν σύμπαντα οὐρανὸν οἷον μέγαν πέπλον παντοίοις γραφῆς κάλλεσιν ἐστεφάνου. ἀέρα δ' ἐκτείνας εἰς βάθος ἄνωθεν ἐξ ὕψους, πλάτη τε καὶ μήκη τοῦ σύμπαντος κόσμου τῇ τούτου ψυχώσας δυνάμει, πτηνοῖς ἅπασιν ἀνῆκε μορφοῦσθαι, τοῖς δι' ἀέρος φερομένοις ἀφανέσι τε καὶ ὁρωμένοις μέγα πέλαγος ἐξαπλώσας διανήχεσθαι. γῆν δ' ἐν μέσῳ κέντρου δίκην σταθμησάμενος, ὠκεανῷ ταύτην περιέβαλε σμαραγεῖ τε πόντος ἐπ' αὐτῇ, τῷ τῆς περιβολῆς κυανῷ χρώματι καλλωπιζομένην. 6.7 ταύτην δ' ἑστίαν καὶ μητέρα καὶ τιθήνην ζώων ἁπάντων τῶν ἐν αὐτῇ καταδείξας, ὀμβρίοις τε καὶ πηγαίοις νάμασιν ἀρδεύσας, χλοάζειν παντοίοις καὶ φυτοῖς καὶ ὡραίοις ἄνθεσιν εἰς εὔθυμον ζωῆς ἀπόλαυσιν ἐδωρήσατο. ζώων δ' ἐν αὐτῇ τὸ τιμιώτατον καὶ αὐτῷ φίλον κατ' εἰκόνα τὴν αὐτοῦ πλασάμενος, νοῦ καὶ ἐπιστήμης ἐπήβολον, λόγου τε καὶ σοφίας ἔκγονον, λογικὸν ἄνθρωπον, τῶν λοιπῶν ὅσα κατὰ γῆν ἕρπει καὶ νέμεται ἀρχικῇ δυνάμει κρατεῖν τούτῳ ἔδωκεν. ἄνθρωπος γὰρ ἦν αὐτῷ ζώων τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς τὸ θεοφιλέστατον, ᾧ καὶ τὰ τῶν ἀλόγων γένη δουλεύειν οἷα πατὴρ παραδέδωκεν, ἄνθρωπος, ᾧ καὶ θάλατταν πλωτὴν ἀνῆκε καὶ γῆν παντοίοις φυτοῖς ἐστεφάνωσεν, ᾧ καὶ τὰ ἐν βυθοῖς ἕρποντα πτηνῶν τε τὰ μετάρσια ὑποχείρια πεποίηται, ᾧ καὶ δυνάμεις ἐπιστημονικὰς εἰς παντοίων μαθημάτων ὑποδοχὴν ἐδωρήσατο, ᾧ καὶ τὰς οὐρανίους ἐξεκάλυψε θεωρίας, δρόμους ἡλίου καὶ σελήνης τροπὰς περιόδους τε πλανήτων καὶ ἀπλανῶν ἀστέρων ἐκφήνας, ἄνθρωπος, ᾧ μόνῳ τῶν ἐπὶ γῆς τὸν πατέρα γινώσκειν τὸν ἐπουράνιον καὶ τὸν μέγαν τοῦ σύμπαντος αἰῶνος βασιλέα γεραίρειν ὕμνοις διετάξατο. 6.8 ἀλλὰ γὰρ ἐπὶ τούτοις ἅπασιν ὁ κοσμοποιὸς τέτταρσιν ἐνιαυτοῦ τροπαῖς τὸν ἄτρεπτον αἰῶνα περιεζώννυ, χειμερίους μὲν ὥρας ἔαρι περιγράψας, ἔαρ δέ, ἐνιαυσίων ὡρῶν ἀρχήν, ἰσορρόποις ταλαντεύσας ζυγοῖς, κἄπειτα ἔαρος πολυκαρπίᾳ τὸν σύμπαντα στεφανώσας αἰῶνα, θέρους ἀκμῇ τοῦτον μεταπαραδέδωκεν, εἶθ' οἷα καμάτου διαναπαύσας ἀνεκτήσατο μετοπωρινῷ διαστήματι, ὑγραῖς τ' αὐτὸν ὄμβρων χειμερίων φοραῖς ὥσπερ τινὰ βασιλικὸν ἀποσμήχων ἵππον καὶ τοῖς ἐξ αὐτοῦ νάμασι λαμπρὸν ἀπεργαζόμενος, τοῖς τ' ἐξ ὑετῶν αὐτάρκως πιάνας ἀρδεύμασιν, αὖθις αὐτὸν ἔαρος ἐν προθύροις ἵστησι πύλαις. 6.9 ἐνθένδε δὴ ἐν τῷ τοῦ παντὸς ἐνιαυτοῦ κύκλῳ τοιαῖσδε σοφίας ἡνίαις ὁ μέγας βασιλεὺς ὧδε περιδησάμενος τὸν αὐτοῦ αἰῶνα, ὑπὸ μείζονι φέρεσθαι διετάξατο κυβερνήτῃ, τῷ αὐτοῦ μονογενεῖ λόγῳ, τῷ δὴ κοινῷ τῶν ὅλων σωτῆρι, τὰς τοῦ παντὸς παραδοὺς ἡνίας. ὁ δ' οἷα παρὰ πατρὸς ἀγαθοῦ τὸν κλῆρον ὑποδεδεγμένος, ὁμοῦ τε πάντα ὅσα κύτος οὐρανοῦ εἴσω τε καὶ ἐκτὸς αὐτοῦ περιλαβὼν ἔχει μιᾷ συνδησάμενος ἁρμονίᾳ, εὐθείᾳ περαίνει, σὺν δίκῃ τὰ πρόσφορα τοῖς κατὰ γῆν αὐτοῦ
