Some were composing prayers of entry, as they were expecting to be deposed in the great church, while others were performing consecrations with water, and porticoes and balconies, and structures and columns, but also the precious icons of the greatest temple were being consecrated by the sprinkling of water. So then, Galaktion, being led by the hand, went about with a blind foot and sprinkled, and what seemed to them the defilement of the venerable icons was cleansed by them as they consecrated them. And those who could see also sought to be cleansed, (6) and indeed different penances were devised for the laity and different ones for the ordained. And it was the concern of the monks to set forth those for the laity, and as it seemed good to them, they imposed many and few things on those who came forward, if they had their communion only in psalmody and the partaking of the sacred bread, with moderate ones, but if also in the participation of the divine gifts, imposing greater penances. 21 But for the high priests and clergy, they, submitting themselves to the patriarch, referred the penalties to him. And indeed while he was ill, they themselves acting, and at times also referring their own opinions to him, who followed in many things even unwillingly, they established the church as seemed best to them. For heavy punishments followed those who would in any way stand against them. Wherefore, the temple also having been closed to all, when the high priests came in order to learn for what reasons they were doing these things, they, putting forward the patriarch like a lifeless burden, and having appointed the monk Gennadios as their spokesman, made that defense full of horror, that the greatest things had been transgressed by them, and the holy gospel had been violated. At which, being greatly distressed, a commotion and uproar arose, and they blamed the one who spoke, and indeed they inquired of the patriarch if these things were being said with his consent. But he mocked the one who had spoken, and smoothed over the present circumstances as much as possible. Finally they set forth the patriarch's decision and read it in church, imposing a period of three months on high priests and clergy, and on the laity according to the measure of their communion, except assigning lesser penances. But to the archdeacons, I mean Meliteniotes and Metochites, because being sent as envoys 22 by the emperor they came together with the pope while he was celebrating the liturgy and indeed stood with him, since here too the friars with John Parastron, they too having been sent as an embassy by the pope, had acted thus when the patriarch Joseph was then celebrating the liturgy, and it seemed tolerable and having no prejudice, but nevertheless for such reasons, as ones who had transgressed the greatest things, they brought complete deposition. 7. Then on the fifth of the month Hekatombaion, having sufficiently purified the temple late in the day (for the feast of the Theophany was pressing), they receive those of the church into the communion of chanting. And indeed when the hymns were finished, since it was also necessary for the ceremony of the blessing of the waters to take place, they gather around the phiale of the church, at once they, and at once the clergy, and at once the people, as many of the Greeks and as many of the Latins, and they appoint the blind Galaktion to lead the ceremony, and with much and abundant light, with candles given also to the Latins themselves, the rites of the feast were celebrated. And they did these things, with the emperor, as it pleased them, permitting them to do all things. So that, at least, only the things of yesterday's storm might be settled, on account of which he was clearly grieving before to those faithful to him, co-ruling and cooperating with his father, even if he was not able to oppose at all, being constrained by the difficulties of the time. So they, thus having taken along 23 also those of the clergy, but others, seeing the Latins standing with candles, on whose account yesterday and the day before the church was being opened, being purified by propitiatory prayers, seemed to see dreams in what was being done. But the time then allowed it, and such things were being done for a while. For the emperor, being a mind that delighted in the good, and for the peace of the church even giving up his own soul, allowed many things to happen even against his own judgment, trusting only in the outcome, that if somehow from this the people might be at peace, the goads of discord having been blunted. For which reason also
