And when our Lord Jesus Christ was born according to the flesh and Herod had evilly departed this life, the saying was fulfilled, "a ruler shall not fail from Judah, until he comes for whom it is reserved," who is Christ. But the wretched Herod, being eaten by worms for days and spewing them forth, ended his life pitiably, just like his most impious father. But why has the resurrection of the Lord been named the eighth? This man, caring for justice, always wrote to the cities under him, saying, "If I write anything ordering it to be done contrary to the laws, it is not to be heeded; for I have done so in ignorance." But later, alas, having suddenly changed to a worse opinion, he turned to every unholy deed, bloodshed, and frenzy, and thus ended his life. Μετὰ δὲ Αὔγουστον ἐβασίλευσε Τιβέριος υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἔτη κγʹ, ὃς κτίσας πόλιν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ ἐκάλεσεν αὐτὴν εἰς τὸ ἴδιον ὄνομα Τιβεριάδα. οὗ τῷ ιεʹ ἔτει τῆς βασιλείας ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν βαπτισθεὶς τοῦ εὐαγγελικοῦ κηρύγματος ἀπήρξατο. ἐν δὲ τῷ ιηʹ 26 σταυρωθεὶς ἀνέστη τῇ κεʹ τοῦ Φαμενὼθ μηνὸς ἤτοι Μαρτίου, τοῦ πρωτοκτίστου μηνὸς Νισὰν παρ' Ἑβραίοις λεγομένου, ἐπιφωσκούσης κυριακῆς. διὰ τί δὲ ὀγδόη ἡ τοῦ κυρίου ἀνάστασις ἐπωνόμασται; ἐπειδὴ ἑπτάκις νεκρῶν ἀνάστασιν εὕρομεν ἐν τῇ θείᾳ γραφῇ καὶ μετὰ τοὺς ζʹ ὄγδοος ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀνέστη ὁ κύριος. πρὸ γὰρ τῆς Χριστοῦ ἀναστάσεως ἐν τῇ παλαιᾷ πρώτη γέγονεν ἡ τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς χήρας, ὃν Ἠλίας ἐν Σαράφθοις ἀνέστησεν, βʹ ἡ τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς Σουμανίτιδος, ὃν Ἐλισσαῖος ἤγειρεν, γʹ ἡ τοῦ στρατιώτου, ὃς ἐγγὺς Ἐλισσαίου ταφεὶς καὶ τοῖς ὀστέοις τοῦ προφήτου πλησιάσας ὡς ἀπὸ πυρὸς ἐξεπήδησεν, δʹ ἐν τῇ καινῇ ἡ τῆς θυγατρὸς τοῦ ἀρχισυναγώγου, εʹ ἡ τοῦ υἱοῦ τῆς χήρας, ʹ ἡ τοῦ Λαζάρου, ζʹ ὅτε πολλὰ σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων ἁγίων ἠγέρθη, ηʹ δὲ ἡ τοῦ κυρίου ἀνάστασις μετὰ τὸ σωτήριον πάθος. οὗτος φροντίζων τοῦ δικαίου ἔγραφεν ἀεὶ ταῖς ὑπ' αὐτὸν πόλεσι λέγων "ἐάν τι γράψω παρὰ τοὺς νόμους προστάσσων γίνεσθαι, τούτῳ μὴ προσεκτέον· ἠγνόηκα γάρ." ἀλλ' ὕστερον, φεῦ, αἰφνίδιον εἰς τὴν χείρονα μεταβληθεὶς γνώμην πρὸς πᾶσαν ἀνοσιουργίαν μιαιφονίαν τε καὶ οἰστρηλασίαν ἐτράπη, καὶ οὕτω τὸν βίον κατέστρεψεν. Μετὰ δὲ Τιβέριον ἐβασίλευσε Γάϊος υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἔτη δ', ὃς πρῶτον μὲν μεγαλοφρόνως διεῖπε τὰ τῆς βασιλείας πράγματα καὶ τοῖς ὑπηκόοις καθηκόντως ἐκέχρητο, ὕστερον δὲ μετὰ δύο χρόνους 27 ἐκστὰς τῆς ἀνθρωπίνης φρονήσεως κατὰ μίμησιν τοῦ πατρὸς ἑαυτὸν ἀπεθέωσεν καὶ ἀνδριάντας
