did they make it false? By working wickedness, living luxuriously, being drunk, and doing countless most shameful and difficult things. And that this is true, listen to what follows. For he shows what I am saying through what he immediately adds and says: They who sleep upon ivory beds, and live wantonly upon their couches, they who eat the kids from the flocks, and suckling calves from the herds, they who drink strained wine, and anoint themselves with the finest ointments. You received the Sabbath, that you might deliver your soul from wickedness; but you work it all the more. For what could be worse than this stupidity, than sleeping on ivory beds? Other sins may have some small pleasure, such as drunkenness, greed, and debauchery; but to sleep on ivory beds, what pleasure does it have? What comfort? For does the beauty of the bed make our sleep sweeter and more pleasant? Rather, this is most burdensome and most oppressive, if we have sense. 48.973 For when you consider that, while you are sleeping on an ivory bed, another does not even have bread to enjoy in security, will not your conscience condemn you, and rise up to accuse you of this inequality? But if sleeping on ivory beds is a crime, when they are also covered all over with silver, what defense shall we have? Do you wish to see the beauty of a bed? I will show you now, not the elegance of a private citizen's bed, nor a soldier's, but of a royal bed. For even if you were the most ambitious of all, I know well that you would not wish to have a more elegant bed than the king's; and what is more, not of any king, but of the first, and the most kingly of all kings, and one who is sung of even now throughout the whole world; I show you the bed of the blessed David. What sort of bed, then, was that one? It was not adorned with silver and gold, but on all sides with tears and confessions. And he himself says this, speaking thus: I will wash my bed every night; I will water my couch with my tears. For his tears were fixed upon it on all sides like pearls. 8. And consider for me the soul that loves God; for since during the day the many cares for rulers, commanders, nations, peoples, soldiers, wars, peace, political affairs, domestic affairs, things far and near, were distracting him and leading him away; that leisure, which we all spend on sleeping, he spent on confession and prayers and tears. And he did not do this for one night, and then stop on the second, nor for two or three, and then skip those in between, but he did this every night. For I will wash my bed every night, he says; I will water my couch with my tears, showing the abundance of his tears and their constancy. For while all were resting and in quiet, he alone then met with God, and the sleepless eye was present for him as he lamented and wept and confessed his own evils. You too, prepare such a bed. For silver spread about it both stirs up envy from men, and kindles wrath from above. But such tears as David's know how to quench even the very fire of Gehenna. Do you wish me to show you another bed? I mean that of Jacob. He had the ground beneath him, and a stone under his head; for this reason he also saw the spiritual stone, and that ladder, on which angels were ascending and descending. Let us too devise such beds, so that we may also see such dreams. But if we are lying upon a silver one, not only shall we reap no pleasure, but we shall also endure despondency. For when you consider that in the extreme cold, in the middle of the night, while you are sleeping on a bed, the poor man is cast upon a pallet in the gateways of the baths, clothed in straw, trembling, stiff with the cold, choked with hunger; even if you were more stone-like than all, I know well that you will condemn yourself, you for living in luxury beyond what is needful, while not allowing him to enjoy even the things that are needful. Καὶ ὅτι τοῦτό ἐστιν ἀληθὲς, ἄκουσον τῶν ἑξῆς. ∆είκνυσι γὰρ ὃ λέγω δι' ὧν εὐθὺς ἐπάγει καὶ λέγει· Οἱ καθεύδοντες ἐπὶ κλινῶν ἐλεφαντίνων, καὶ κατασπαταλῶντες ἐπὶ τῶν στρωμνῶν αὐτῶν, οἱ ἐσθίοντες ἐρίφους ἐκ ποιμνίων, καὶ μοσχάρια ἐκ βουκολίων γαλαθηνὰ, οἱ πίνοντες τὸν διυλισμένον οἶνον, καὶ τὰ πρῶτα μύρα χριόμενοι. Τί γὰρ ἂν γένοιτο τῆς βλακείας ταύτης χεῖρον, ἢ τὸ ἐπὶ κλινῶν ἐλεφαντίνων καθεύδειν; Αἱ ἄλλαι ἁμαρτίαι κἂν μικράν τινα ἡδονὴν ἔχωσιν, οἷον ἡ μέθη, ἡ πλεονεξία καὶ ἀσωτία· τὸ δὲ ἐπὶ κλινῶν ἐλεφαντίνων καθευδῆσαι, ποίαν ἡδονὴν ἔχει; ποίαν παραμυθίαν; Μὴ γὰρ ἡδίω καὶ γλυκύτερον ἡμῖν τὸν ὕπνον ἐργάζεται τῆς κλίνης τὸ κάλλος; Φορτικώτατον μᾶλλον μὲν οὖν καὶ ἐπαχθέστατον τοῦτο, ἐὰν νοῦν 48.973 ἔχωμεν. Ὅταν γὰρ ἐννοήσῃς ὅτι, σοῦ καθεύδοντος ἐπὶ κλίνης ἐλεφαντίνης, ἕτερος οὐδ' ἄρτου μετὰ ἀδείας ἀπολαύειν ἔχει, οὐ καταγνώσεταί σου τὸ συνειδὸς, καὶ ἐπαναστήσεται κατηγοροῦν τῆς ἀνωμαλίας ταύτης; Εἰ δὲ τὸ ἐπὶ ἐλεφαντίνων κλινῶν καθεύδειν ἔγκλημα, ὅταν καὶ ἀργύρῳ περιβεβλημέναι πάντοθεν ὦσι, ποίαν ἕξομεν ἀπολογίαν; Βούλει κάλλος κλίνης ἰδεῖν; Ἐγώ σοι δείκνυμι νῦν, οὐκ ἰδιωτικῆς, οὐδὲ στρατιωτικῆς, ἀλλὰ βασιλικῆς κλίνης εὐπρέπειαν. Κἂν γὰρ φιλοτιμότατος ᾖς πάντων, εὖ οἶδα ὅτι τῆς τοῦ βασιλέως κλίνης οὐκ ἐθελήσεις ἔχειν εὐπρεπεστέραν· καὶ τὸ δὴ μεῖζον, οὐ τοῦ τυχόντος βασιλέως, ἀλλὰ τοῦ πρώτου, καὶ τοῦ πάντων βασιλέων βασιλικωτέρου, καὶ μέχρι νῦν ᾀδομένου πανταχοῦ τῆς οἰκουμένης· δείκνυμί σοι κλίνην τὴν τοῦ μακαρίου ∆αυΐδ. Ποταπὴ τοίνυν ἦν ἐκείνη; Οὐκ ἀργύρῳ καὶ χρυσῷ, ἀλλὰ δάκρυσι καὶ ἐξομολογήσεσι πάντοθεν ἦν κεκαλλωπισμένη. Καὶ ταῦτα αὐτός φησιν οὕτω λέγων· Λούσω καθ' ἑκάστην νύκτα τὴν κλίνην μου· ἐν δάκρυσί μου τὴν στρωμνήν μου βρέξω. Ὥσπερ γὰρ μαργαρῖται τὰ δάκρυα αὐτῇ ἐπεπήγει πάντοθεν. ηʹ. Καὶ σκόπει μοι φιλόθεον ψυχήν· ἐπειδὴ γὰρ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ πολλαὶ αἱ φροντίδες ἀρχόντων, ταξιαρχῶν, ἐθνῶν, δήμων, στρατιωτῶν, πολέμων, εἰρήνης, τῶν πολιτικῶν πραγμάτων, τῶν κατὰ τὴν οἰκίαν, τῶν πόῤῥωθεν, τῶν πλησίον, περιεῖλκον αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπῆγον· τὴν σχολὴν, ἣν πάντες εἰς τὸ καθεύδειν ἀναλίσκομεν, εἰς ἐξομολόγησιν καὶ εὐχὰς καὶ δάκρυα ἀνήλισκεν ἐκεῖνος. Καὶ οὐχὶ μίαν τοῦτο ἐποίησε νύκτα, τὴν δὲ δευτέραν ἐπαύσατο, οὐδὲ δύο καὶ τρεῖς, τὰς δὲ μεταξὺ διέλιπεν, ἀλλὰ καθ' ἑκάστην νύκτα τοῦτο ἔπραττε. Λούσω γὰρ καθ' ἑκάστην νύκτα, φησὶ, τὴν κλίνην μου· ἐν δάκρυσί μου τὴν στρωμνήν μου βρέξω, τὴν δαψίλειαν τῶν δακρύων καὶ τὴν συνέχειαν ἐμφαίνων. Πάντων γὰρ ἡσυχαζόντων, καὶ ἐν ἠρεμίᾳ ὄντων, μόνος τῷ Θεῷ τότε ἐνετύγχανε, καὶ παρῆν ὁ ἀκοίμητος ὀφθαλμὸς ὀδυρομένῳ καὶ θρηνοῦντι καὶ τὰ οἰκεῖα ἐξαγγέλλοντι κακά. Τοιαύτην καὶ σὺ κατασκεύασον κλίνην. Ὁ μὲν γὰρ ἄργυρος περικείμενος καὶ φθόνον παρὰ ἀνθρώπων ἐγείρει, καὶ ὀργὴν ἐκκαίει τὴν ἄνωθεν. Τὰ δὲ τοιαῦτα δάκρυα, οἷα τὰ τοῦ ∆αυῒδ, καὶ αὐτὸ τὸ τῆς γεέννης οἶδε κατασβέσαι πῦρ. Βούλει σοι καὶ ἑτέραν δείξω κλίνην; τὴν τοῦ Ἰακὼβ λέγω. Ἔδαφος εἶχεν ὑποκείμενον, καὶ λίθον ὑπὸ τὴν κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ· διὰ τοῦτο καὶ τὸν νοητὸν εἶδε λίθον, καὶ τὴν κλίμακα ἐκείνην, δι' ἧς ἀνέβαινον καὶ κατέβαινον ἄγγελοι. Τοιαύτας ἐπινοῶμεν κλίνας καὶ ἡμεῖς, ἵνα καὶ τοιαῦτα βλέπωμεν ὀνείρατα. Ἂν δὲ ἐπὶ τῆς ἀργυρᾶς ὦμεν κατακείμενοι, οὐ μόνον οὐδεμίαν ἡδονὴν καρπωσόμεθα, ἀλλὰ καὶ ἀθυμίαν ὑπομενοῦμεν. Ὅταν γὰρ ἐννοήσῃς, ὅτι ἐν κρυμῷ ἐσχάτῳ, ἐν νυκτὶ μέσῃ, σοῦ καθεύδοντος ἐπὶ κλίνης, ὁ πένης ἐπὶ στιβάδος ἔῤῥιπται ἐν τοῖς τῶν βαλανείων προπυλαίοις, καλάμην περιβεβλημένος, τρέμων, πηγνύμενος τῷ κρύει, ἀγχόμενος τῷ λιμῷ· κἂν ἁπάντων μᾶλλον λίθινος ᾖς, εὖ οἶδα, ὅτι καταγνώσῃ σαυτοῦ, σὺ μὲν ὑπὲρ τὴν χρείαν τρυφῶν, ἐκεῖνον δὲ μηδὲ τῶν κατὰ χρείαν ἀπολαύειν ἀφείς.
