now sitting at the right hand of the Father. For what harm could come to God from this dispensation, or what stain? Do you not see this sun, whose body is perceptible and corruptible and perishable, even if Greeks and Manicheans are choked ten thousand times on hearing these things? Not only this, but also the earth, and the sea, and simply all of visible creation, has been subjected to futility. And hear Paul declaring this, in what he says: For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope. Then, explaining what it is to be subjected to futility, he added, saying: that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God.

So now it is perishable, and it is corruptible; for to be in bondage to corruption is nothing other than to be corruptible. If, therefore, the sun, being a corruptible body, sends its rays everywhere, and associates with mud and pollutions and many other such things, it is in no way harmed in its own purity by its association with these bodies, but even draws back its rays pure again, imparting its own virtue to many of the bodies that received it, while itself taking on not even the slightest stench or pollution; much more the Sun of righteousness, the Master of the incorporeal powers, having come into pure flesh, was not only not defiled, but even made this very flesh purer and more holy. Therefore, considering all these things, and remembering the voice that says: I will dwell in them, and walk among them; and again, You are the temple of God, and the Spirit of God dwells in you, let us also say to them, and stop the shameless mouths of the impious, and rejoice in our good things, and glorify the incarnate God for such great condescension, and according to our ability, let us give him worthy honor and recompense; but no recompense could come from us to God, except only the salvation of us and our souls, and the care for virtue. 7. Let us not, therefore, be ungrateful to the benefactor, but let us all bring forth all things according to our ability: faith, hope, love, self-control, almsgiving, hospitality. And what I urged you before, this I also urge you now, and I will not cease urging you always. What is this? When you are about to approach this awesome and divine table and sacred mystery, do so with fear and trembling, with a pure conscience, with fasting and prayer, not making a disturbance, nor kicking, nor pushing your neighbors; for this is of the utmost madness, and of no small contempt.

Wherefore he also brings great punishment and vengeance upon those who do these 49.361 things. Consider, O man, what sacrifice you are about to touch, what table you are approaching; remember also that, being earth and ashes, you are partaking of the blood and body of Christ. And when a king calls you to a feast, you recline with fear, and partake of the foods set before you with reverence and quiet; but when God calls you to his own table, and sets forth his own Son, with angelic powers standing by with fear and trembling, and the Cherubim veiling their faces, the Seraphim crying out with trembling, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord; do you shout, tell me, and make a disturbance at this spiritual feast? Do you not know that the soul must be full of calm at that time? There is a need for much peace and quiet, not for noise and anger and turmoil; for these things make the approaching soul unclean. What pardon, then, could there be for us, if after so many sins we do not even at the time of our approach purify ourselves of those irrational passions? And what is at all more necessary than the things set before us? or what disturbs us, that we should hurry, leaving this behind, there

Ποία γὰρ ἂν βλάβη τῷ Θεῷ γένοιτ' ἂν ἀπὸ τῆς οἰκονομίας ταύτης, ἢ ποία κηλίς; Οὐχ ὁρᾶτε τουτονὶ τὸν ἥλιον, οὗ τὸ σῶμά ἐστιν αἰσθητὸν καὶ φθαρτὸν καὶ ἐπίκηρον, κἂν μυριάκις ἀποπνίγωνται Ἕλληνες καὶ Μανιχαῖοι ταῦτα ἀκούοντες; Οὐχ οὗτος δὲ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ γῆ, καὶ θάλασσα, καὶ πᾶσα ἁπλῶς ἡ ὁρωμένη κτίσις, τῇ ματαιότητι ὑποτέτακται. Καὶ ἄκουε Παύλου τοῦτο δηλοῦντος, ἐν οἷς φησι· Τῇ γὰρ ματαιότητι ἡ κτίσις ὑπετάγη, οὐχ ἑκοῦσα, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὑποτάξαντα ἐπ' ἐλπίδι. Εἶτα δηλῶν, τί ποτέ ἐστι, ματαιότητι ὑποταγῆναι, ἐπήγαγε, λέγων· Ὅτι καὶ αὐτὴ ἡ κτίσις ἐλευθερωθήσεται ἀπὸ τῆς δουλείας τῆς φθορᾶς εἰς τὴν ἐλευθερίαν τῆς δόξης τῶν τέκνων τοῦ Θεοῦ.

Ὥστε νῦν ἐπίκηρός ἐστι, καὶ φθαρτή ἐστι· τὸ γὰρ τῇ φθορᾷ δουλεύειν οὐδὲν ἕτερόν ἐστιν, ἢ φθαρτὸν εἶναι. Εἰ τοίνυν ὁ ἥλιος, σῶμα φθαρτὸν ὢν, πανταχοῦ τὰς ἀκτῖνας ἀφίησι, καὶ βορβόροις καὶ μολυσμοῖς καὶ πολλοῖς ἄλλοις τοιούτοις ὁμιλῶν πράγμασι, οὐδὲν ἀπὸ τῆς ὁμιλίας τῶν σωμάτων εἰς τὴν οἰκείαν καθαρότητα παραβλάπτεται, ἀλλὰ καὶ καθαρὰς συστέλλει τὰς ἀκτῖνας πάλιν, τῆς οἰκείας ἀρετῆς πολλοῖς τῶν ὑποδεξαμένων αὐτὸν σωμάτων μεταδιδοὺς, τῆς δὲ δυσωδίας καὶ τοῦ μολυσμοῦ οὐδὲ τὸ τυχὸν αὐτὸς προσλαμβάνων· πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὁ τῆς δικαιοσύνης ἥλιος, ὁ τῶν ἀσωμάτων δυνάμεων ∆εσπότης, εἰς καθαρὰν σάρκα ἐλθὼν, οὐ μόνον οὐκ ἐμολύνθη, ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐτὴν ταύτην καθαρωτέραν, καὶ ἁγιωτέραν εἰργάσατο. Ταῦτα οὖν ἅπαντα ἐννοοῦντες, καὶ μνημονεύοντες τῆς φωνῆς τῆς λεγούσης· Ἐνοικήσω ἐν αὐτοῖς, καὶ ἐμπεριπατήσω· καὶ πάλιν, Ὑμεῖς ναὸς Θεοῦ ἐστε, καὶ τὸ Πνεῦμα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐνοικεῖ ἐν ὑμῖν, καὶ ἡμεῖς πρὸς ἐκείνους λέγωμεν, καὶ τὰ ἀναίσχυντα τῶν ἀσεβῶν ἀποφράττωμεν στόματα, καὶ ἐπὶ τοῖς ἡμετέροις ἀγαθοῖς εὐφραινώμεθα, καὶ τὸν σαρκωθέντα Θεὸν δοξάζωμεν ὑπὲρ τῆς τοσαύτης συγκαταβάσεως, καὶ κατὰ δύναμιν τὴν ἡμετέραν, ἀξίαν ἀποδῶμεν αὐτῷ καὶ τὴν τιμὴν καὶ τὴν ἀμοιβήν· Θεῷ δὲ ἀμοιβὴ οὐδεμία παρ' ἡμῶν γένοιτ' ἂν, ἀλλ' ἢ μόνον ἡ σωτηρία ἡμῶν καὶ τῶν ἡμετέρων ψυχῶν, καὶ ἡ περὶ τὴν ἀρετὴν ἐπιμέλεια. ζʹ. Μὴ τοίνυν γενώμεθα ἀγνώμονες περὶ τὸν εὐεργέτην, ἀλλὰ τὰ κατὰ δύναμιν ἅπαντες ἅπαντα εἰσενέγκωμεν, πίστιν, ἐλπίδα, ἀγάπην, σωφροσύνην, ἐλεημοσύνην, φιλοξενίαν. Καὶ ὃ πρώην ὑμᾶς παρεκάλεσα, τοῦτο καὶ νῦν, καὶ ἀεὶ παρακαλῶν οὐ παύσομαι. Τί δὲ τοῦτό ἐστι; Μέλλοντες προσιέναι τῇ φρικτῇ καὶ θείᾳ ταύτῃ τραπέζῃ καὶ ἱερᾷ μυσταγωγίᾳ, μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου τοῦτο ποιεῖτε, μετὰ καθαροῦ συνειδότος, μετὰ νηστείας καὶ προσευχῆς, μὴ θορυβοῦντες, μηδὲ λακτίζοντες, μηδὲ ὠθοῦντες τοὺς πλησίον· ἐσχάτης γὰρ τοῦτο παρανοίας, καὶ καταφρονήσεως οὐ τῆς τυχούσης.

∆ιὸ καὶ πολλὴν ἐπάγει τοῖς ταῦτα 49.361 ποιοῦσι τὴν κόλασιν καὶ τὴν τιμωρίαν. Ἐννόησον, ὦ ἄνθρωπε, ποίας μέλλεις ἅπτεσθαι θυσίας, ποίᾳ προσέρχεσθαι τραπέζῃ· ἐνθυμήθητι καὶ ὅτι γῆ ὢν καὶ σποδὸς, αἷμα καὶ σῶμα Χριστοῦ μεταλαμβάνεις. Καὶ βασιλέως μὲν εἰς εὐωχίαν καλοῦντος ὑμᾶς, μετὰ φόβου ἀνακλίνεσθε, καὶ τῶν προκειμένων μετὰ αἰδοῦς καὶ ἡσυχίας μεταλαμβάνετε ἐδεσμάτων· τοῦ Θεοῦ δὲ καλοῦντος ἐπὶ τὴν ἑαυτοῦ τράπεζαν, καὶ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ προτιθέντος Υἱὸν, ἀγγελικῶν δυνάμεων παρισταμένων μετὰ φόβου καὶ τρόμου, καὶ τῶν Χερουβὶμ κατακαλυπτόντων τὰ πρόσωπα, τῶν Σεραφὶμ κραζόντων τρόμῳ, Ἅγιος, ἅγιος, ἅγιος Κύριος· σὺ κράζεις, εἰπέ μοι, καὶ θορυβῇ πρὸς τὴν πνευματικὴν ταύτην ἐστίασιν; Οὐκ οἶδας, ὅτι γαλήνης δεῖ γέμειν τὴν ψυχὴν κατ' ἐκεῖνον τὸν καιρόν; Εἰρήνης πολλῆς καὶ ἡσυχίας χρεία, οὐχὶ θορύβου καὶ θυμοῦ καὶ ταραχῆς· ταῦτα γὰρ ἀκάθαρτον ποιεῖ τὴν προσιοῦσαν ψυχήν. Τίς οὖν ἂν γένοιτο ἡμῖν συγγνώμη, εἰ μετὰ τοσαῦτα ἁμαρτήματα μηδὲ τὸν καιρὸν τῆς προσελεύσεως καθαρεύομεν τῶν ἀλόγων παθῶν ἐκείνων; Τί δὲ ὅλως ἀναγκαιότερον τῶν προκειμένων; ἢ τί ἡμᾶς θορυβεῖ, ἵνα σπουδάσωμεν, τοῦτο καταλιπόντες, ἐκεῖ
