That one delivered the cruel fellow-servant to punishment. 12. But you, see how much more ungrateful and 51.364 senseless you have become than that one, praying against your enemies. He did not ask the master to demand payment, but he himself demanded the hundred denarii; but you call upon the Master himself for this shameless and forbidden demand. And that one, not in the sight of the lord, but outside, was choking the fellow-servant; but you, standing before the king at the very time of prayer, do these things. But if that one, neither calling upon the master for the demand, and doing these things after he had gone out, received no forgiveness, you, who both stir up the Master for this forbidden exaction, and do these things in His sight, what penalty will you not pay, tell me? But is your mind inflamed and swollen with the memory of enmity, and your heart agitated, and, remembering the one who has grieved you, are you unable to quell the swelling of your thoughts? But oppose to this inflammation the memory of your own sins, the fear of the coming punishment. Remember for how many things you are accountable to the Master, and that you owe Him penalties for all of them, and this fear will certainly overcome that anger, since this is much more powerful than that passion. Remember gehenna and chastisement and punishment at the time of prayer, and you will not even be able to take your enemy into your mind. Crush your mind, humble your soul with the memory of your sins, and anger will not even be able to trouble you. But this is the cause of all evils, that we examine the sins of others with great exactness, but we pass over our own with great carelessness. But one ought to do the opposite: to keep one's own evils unforgotten, and never to take thought of others'. If we do this, we shall both have God merciful, and we shall cease from being eternally angry with our neighbors, and we shall never have any enemy; and if we ever should have one, we shall quickly also dissolve the enmity, and receive swift forgiveness for our own sins. For just as he who bears a grudge against his neighbor does not allow the punishment for his own sins to be dissolved, so he who is pure of anger, will also quickly be pure of sins. For if we, who are wicked and enslaved to anger, on account of the command of God overlook all the sins against us, much more will the lover of mankind, who is good and pure of all passion, overlook our offenses, repaying to us the reward for kindness to our neighbor in the forgiveness of our own sins; may it be that we all obtain this, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory and the power, forever and ever. τὸν σύνδουλον ὠμότητος ἔδωκε τὴν τιμωρίαν ἐκεῖνος. ιβʹ. Σὺ δὲ κἀκείνου θέα πόσον ἀγνωμονέστερος καὶ 51.364 ἀναισθητότερος γέγονας, τῶν ἐχθρῶν κατευχόμενος, Ἐκεῖνος οὐχὶ τὸν δεσπότην ἠξίου ἀπαιτῆσαι, ἀλλ' αὐτὸς ἀπῄτει τὰ ἑκατὸν δηνάρια· σὺ δὲ καὶ τὸν ∆εσπότην ἐπὶ τὴν ἀπαίτησιν ταύτην τὴν ἀναίσχυντον καὶ κεκωλυμένην παρακαλεῖς. Κἀκεῖνος μὲν οὐκ ἐπ' ὄψεσι τοῦ κυρίου, ἀλλ' ἔξω τὸν σύνδουλον ἦγχε· σὺ δὲ ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ καιρῷ τῆς εὐχῆς πρὸ τοῦ βασιλέως ἑστὼς ταῦτα ποιεῖς. Εἰ δὲ ἐκεῖνος οὔτε τὸν δεσπότην παρακαλέσας ἐπὶ τὴν ἀπαίτησιν, καὶ μετὰ τὸ ἐξελθεῖν ταῦτα ποιῶν, οὐδεμιᾶς ἔτυχε συγγνώμης, σὺ καὶ τὸν ∆εσπότην ἐπὶ τὴν κεκωλυμένην ταύτην ἔκτισιν διεγείρων, καὶ ἐπ' ὄψεσιν αὐτοῦ ταῦτα ποιῶν, ποίαν οὐ δώσεις τιμωρίαν, εἰπέ μοι; Ἀλλὰ φλεγμαίνει σου τῇ μνήμῃ τῆς ἔχθρας ἡ διάνοια καὶ οἰδεῖ, καὶ ἀνέστηκεν ἡ καρδία, καὶ τοῦ λελυπηκότος ἀναμιμνησκόμενος οὐ δύνασαι καταστεῖλαι τὸ οἴδημα τῶν λογισμῶν; Ἀλλ' ἀντίστησον τῇ φλεγμονῇ ταύτῃ τὴν ἀπὸ τῶν σῶν ἁμαρτημάτων μνήμην, τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης κολάσεως φόβον. Ἀναμνήσθητι πόσων ὑπεύθυνος εἶ τῷ ∆εσπότῃ, καὶ ὅτι πάντων ἐκείνων δίκας ὀφείλεις αὐτῷ, καὶ κρατήσει πάντως οὗτος ὁ φόβος τῆς ὀργῆς ἐκείνης, ἐπειδὴ καὶ πολὺ δυνατώτερον τοῦτο ἐκείνου τοῦ πάθους. Ἀναμνήσθητι γεέννης καὶ κολάσεως καὶ τιμωρίας κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τῆς εὐχῆς, καὶ οὐδὲ εἰς νοῦν λαβεῖν δυνήσῃ τὸν ἐχθρόν. Σύντριψον τὴν διάνοιαν, ταπείνωσον τὴν ψυχὴν τῇ μνήμῃ τῶν σοι πεπλημμελημένων, καὶ οὐδὲ ἐνοχλῆσαι δυνήσεταί σοι θυμός. Ἀλλὰ τοῦτό ἐστι τὸ πάντων αἴτιον τῶν κακῶν, ὅτι τὰ μὲν τῶν ἄλλων ἁμαρτήματα μετὰ πολλῆς ἐξετάζομεν τῆς ἀκριβείας, τὰ δὲ ἡμέτερα μετὰ πολλῆς παραπεμπόμεθα τῆς ῥᾳθυμίας. Τοὐναντίον δὲ ποιεῖν ἐχρῆν· τὰ μὲν οἰκεῖα κακὰ ἄληστα ἔχειν, τῶν δὲ ἀλλοτρίων μηδέποτε ἔννοιαν λαμβάνειν. Ἂν τοῦτο ποιῶμεν, καὶ τὸν Θεὸν ἕξομεν ἵλεων, καὶ τοῖς πλησίον παυσόμεθα ἀθάνατα ὀργιζόμενοι, καὶ ἐχθρὸν οὐδένα οὐδέποτε ἕξομεν· εἰ δὲ καὶ σχοίημέν ποτε, ταχέως καὶ τὴν ἀπέχθειαν καταλύσομεν, καὶ τῶν οἰκείων ἁμαρτημάτων ταχεῖαν λάβωμεν συγχώρησιν. Ὥσπερ γὰρ ὁ τῷ πλησίον μνησικακῶν οὐκ ἀφίησι τὴν ἐπὶ τοῖς οἰκείοις ἁμαρτήμασι καταλυθῆναι κόλασιν, οὕτως ὁ καθαρὸς ὢν ὀργῆς, καθαρὸς καὶ ἁμαρτημάτων ἔσται ταχέως. Εἰ γὰρ ἡμεῖς οἱ πονηροὶ καὶ θυμῷ δουλεύοντες, διὰ τὸ τοῦ Θεοῦ πρόσταγμα πάντα τὰ εἰς ἡμᾶς παρορῶμεν ἁμαρτήματα, πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὁ φιλάνθρωπος καὶ ἀγαθὸς καὶ παντὸς καθαρὸς ὢν πάθους παραβλέψεται ἡμῶν τὰ πλημμελήματα, τῆς εἰς τὸν πλησίον φιλοφροσύνης, ἐν τῇ τῶν οἰκείων ἁμαρτημάτων συγχωρήσει, τὴν ἀμοιβὴν ἡμῖν ἀποδιδούς· ἧς γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν, χάριτι καὶ φιλανθρωπίᾳ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καὶ τὸ κράτος, εἰς τοὺς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
