angelic. Then in the middle a law was inserted; but after these things that former life was called back again, having been brought to greater perfection through the way of life according to Christ. Pharaoh's chief cook, Potiphar, bought Joseph; he put him in charge of the affairs of the household. He did not yield to his mistress who commanded him to transgress. He was slandered, he was thrown into prison; he was a ruler there too, he interpreted the dreams for the chief cupbearer and the chief baker. It came to pass as he said; and the one was executed, but the other returned to his former honor. Pharaoh saw the dreams of the cows, of the ears of grain; by which the abundance was shown, and the famine that succeeded it. Joseph was brought out of the prison, that he might interpret; for the chief cupbearer had informed him. He interpreted, and also gave counsel that would alleviate the famine. He becomes second to Pharaoh, and having gathered much grain in the seven years of abundance, when the famine began, he sold to those who wished. His brothers also came to buy. But when he did not see Benjamin with them, fearing that they had destroyed him also, he accuses them of being spies of the land, and that there was no other solution to the charge, unless they could bring down their younger brother Benjamin to Egypt and show him. And taking Simeon 56.324 from them and binding him, he sent the rest away, giving them both the grain and the money. And when they saw the money as they were emptying their sacks, they were disturbed by the strange event, and they asked to take Benjamin from their father, reporting all that had happened. But he held onto the child. But when the famine grew severe, and Judah insisted on wanting to take Benjamin, promising to bring him back safe and sound, Jacob gave both double the money, commanding them to carry other gifts as well. And when they came to Joseph, he received them kindly, and asked about their father, and feasted them splendidly. But when it was time to depart, he commands the silver cup to be placed in Benjamin's sack, without them knowing. And when it was placed and they had taken it and departed, Joseph orders the one over his house to pursue the men. And having pursued them, he accused them, because they had repaid their benefactor with evil things. And as they were being troubled, and decreeing death for the one caught in the theft, if he should be found, and slavery for themselves, it is found with Benjamin. Then Judah came in, and having delivered a long speech about his father and about Joseph and Benjamin, he who had chosen to serve himself instead of the youth, cast Joseph into such pity, that the whole pretense was exposed. For having sent everyone out, so that it might be permitted for him to weep with freedom, he makes himself known to his brothers, and sends to his father with gifts and wagons; and this was also pleasing to Pharaoh. And when Jacob heard the things concerning Joseph, he was overjoyed, and at God's command he went down into Egypt. The father sees Joseph, these things were reported to Pharaoh, and he settled in Rameses. And when the money of the land was spent, the people, giving livestock, received grain; and when these also failed, and the famine did not cease, they gave themselves with their land; and having become slaves to Pharaoh, they sowed, and they gave a fifth part to him, keeping the four parts for themselves. And when Jacob was about to die, he requires an oath from Joseph, that he not bury him in Egypt, but in the tomb of his fathers. And Joseph's sons, Ephraim and Manasseh, he enrolls not in the rank of grandsons, but of sons. And Jacob's sight was dim; and when he had kissed them, and it was time to bless them, Joseph placed Ephraim on Jacob's left, and Manasseh on his right. But Jacob placed his right hand upon the younger one standing on the left, and his left hand upon the one on the right, and he blessed them, and when Joseph thought his father was doing this out of ignorance, and was correcting him, Jacob did not permit it; for he said he was doing this knowingly, not in ignorance. Then Jacob gives to Joseph Shechem as an extra portion, which Simeon and Levi had taken. And he blesses his sons. Here he prophesies concerning Christ.
