For it seems to me that circumcision accomplishes three things: first, as by a kind of sign and seal, it sets apart the descendants of Abraham, and distinguishes them from the other nations; second, it prefigures in itself the grace and power of divine baptism; for just as the one who was circumcised was of old designated as the people of God through the seal; so the one who is baptized, having impressed the seal of Christ upon himself, is enrolled into the adoption of God. And third, it is a symbol of the faithful who are established in grace, who cut out and put to death the uprisings of fleshly pleasures and passions with the cutting word of faith and with ascetic labors, not cutting the body, but purifying the heart, and being circumcised in spirit, not in letter; of whom the divine Paul testifies that their praise (E f. 90) does not require human judgment, but depends on the decree from above. (E f. 120 b, K f.4 b) Since, therefore, the law went against every woman giving birth to male or female, and made the condemnation most general for us, the holy Virgin is exempted from this disrepute, from whom we say Christ was born according to the flesh. For behold, if you please, the precision of the law: "A woman," it says, and not just any woman indiscriminately, but "whoever is impregnated with seed and bears a male, let her be unclean." But in this case, the divine body was formed from the Holy Spirit, being ineffably fashioned in the holy Virgin, and paying little heed to the laws of nature; for the firstborn of the saints, the firstfruits of those who have obtained regeneration from God through the Spirit, had no need at all of the deposit of seed; concerning whom it is clearly stated: "Who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God." Therefore, the holy Virgin indeed escaped the condemnation of the law, having in no way been impregnated with seed, but having brought forth for us the divine infant by the energy of the Spirit. The turtledove is the most talkative among sparrows; but the pigeon, a gentle and meek animal. And such has the Maker and Lord of all become for us, possessing meekness to the utmost, and like a turtledove charming what is under heaven and filling his own vineyard with his beautiful voice, that is, us who have believed in him. For it is written in the Song of Songs, that "The voice of the turtledove was heard in our land; the vines are in blossom;" for Christ has spoken to us the divine and evangelical proclamation, the salvation of the whole world. Therefore, a turtledove and a pigeon were slain, so that he himself might again be signified to us as through types, enduring death according to the flesh for the life of the world. For he himself is the most melodious turtledove, he himself the guileless pigeon. He himself therefore

Καὶ τρίτον, σύμβολον τῶν ἐν χάριτι καθισταμένων πιστῶν, οἳ τῶν σαρκικῶν ἡδονῶν καὶ παθῶν τὰς ἐπαναστάσεις τῷ τμη τικῷ τῆς πίστεως λόγῳ, καὶ πόνοις ἀσκητικοῖς ἐκ τέμνουσι καὶ ἀπονεκροῦσιν, οὐ σῶμα τέμνοντες, ἀλλὰ τὴν καρδίαν καθαίροντες, καὶ πνεύματι οὐ γράμματι περιτεμνόμενοι· ὧν καὶ τὸν ἔπαινον (Ε f. 90) οὐκ ἀνθρωπίνης ἐπικρίσεως δεῖσθαι, ἀλλὰ τῆς ἄνωθεν ἠρτῆσθαι ψήφου, Παῦλος ὁ θεῖος διαμαρτύρεται. (Ε f. 120 b, K f.4 b) Ἰόντος τοίνυν τοῦ νόμου κατὰ γυναικὸς ἁπάσης τικτούσης ἄρσεν ἢ θῆλυ, καὶ γενικωτάτην ἡμῖν ποιουμένου τὴν κατάῤῥησιν, ὑπ εξαίρεται τῆς δυσφημίας ἡ ἁγία Παρθένος, ἧς ἐκ φῦναί φαμεν τὸ κατὰ σάρκα Χριστόν. Θέα γὰρ, εἴ σοι δοκεῖ, τοῦ νόμου τὸ ἀκριβές· "Γυνὴ" γὰρ, φησὶ, καὶ οὐ πᾶσα τυχὸν ἀδιακρίτως, ἀλλ' "ἥτις ἂν σπερματισθῇ καὶ τέκῃ ἄρσεν, ἀκάθαρτος ἔστω." Ἐνταῦθα δὲ ἐκ Πνεύματος ἁγίου τὸ θεῖον συνέστη σῶμα, πλαστουργούμενον ἀῤῥήτως ἐν τῇ ἁγίᾳ Παρθένῳ, καὶ τῶν τῆς φύσεως νόμων ὀλίγα πεφροντικός· ἥκιστα γὰρ σπερματικῆς ἐδεῖτο καταβολῆς ὁ τῶν ἁγίων πρωτότοκος, ἡ ἀπαρχὴ λαχόντων τὴν ἐκ Θεοῦ διὰ Πνεύματος ἀναγέννησιν· περὶ ὧν εἴρηται σαφῶς· "Οἳ οὐκ ἐξ αἱμάτων, οὐδὲ ἐκ θελήματος σαρκὸς ἢ ἀνδρὸς, ἀλλ' ἐκ Θεοῦ ἐγεννήθησαν." ∆ιέδρα δὴ οὖν τὴν ἐκ νόμου καταβοὴν ἡ ἁγία Παρθένος, σπερματισθεῖσα μὲν οὐδαμῶς, ἐνεργείᾳ δὲ τῇ διὰ Πνεύματος τὸ θεῖον ἡμῖν ἀποκυήσασα βρέφος. (Ε f. 120, H f. 103 b) Μετὰ τὸ περιτμηθῆναι, τὸν τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ πάλιν ἀναμένει καιρόν· καὶ ὅτε ἐπληρώθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι (πλήρωσις δὲ ἡμερῶν ἡ τεσσαρακοστὴ ἦν), τότε ἀνάγεται εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα, καὶ εἰς ὄψιν ἄγεται τοῦ Πατρὸς, ὡς ἄνθρωπος καθ' ἡμᾶς, ὁ συνεδριάζων αὐτῷ Θεὸς Λόγος, ὁ καὶ διὰ τῆς τοῦ νόμου σκιᾶς ἐν τοῖς πρωτοτόκοις γραφόμενος. Ἅγια γὰρ καὶ ἱερὰ τῷ Θεῷ καὶ τὰ πρὸ τῆς ἐνανθρωπήσεως πρωτότοκα, ἅπερ ἔθυον αὐτῷ κατὰ νόμον. Ὢ μεγάλης οἰκονομίας! ὢ βάθος πλούτου καὶ σοφίας καὶ γνώσεως Θεοῦ! Ὁ ἐν κόλποις ὢν τοῦ Πατρὸς, ᾧ τὰ πάντα προσάγεται δουλοπρεπῶς, ὁ ταῖς παρὰ πάντων λατρείαις δοξαζόμενος, ὅτε γέγονεν ἐν 72.501 τοῖς τῆς ἀνθρωπότητος μέτροις, τῷ ἰδίῳ Γεννήτορι προσφέρει θυσίαν. Ὧ τοῦ παραδόξου πράγματος! Τοὺς τοῦ νόμου τύπους τετήρηκεν ἡ ἀλήθεια. ∆ιὰ ποίαν αἰτίαν; Ὅτι καὶ νομοθέτης ἦν ὡς Θεὸς, καὶ ὑπὸ νόμον ὡς ἄνθρωπος. Τί δὲ δὴ προσκεκόμικεν; Ὡς πρωτότοκος καὶ ἄρσην, ζεῦγος τρυγόνων καὶ δύο νεοσσοὺς περιστερῶν, κατὰ τὸ τῷ νόμῳ διηγο ρευμένον. Ἀλλὰ τί βούλεται ταῦτα δηλοῦν; Ἡ μὲν τρυγὼν, ἔστι λαλίστατον ἐν στρουθίοις· ἡ δὲ περιστερὰ, ζῶον ἤπιον καὶ πρᾶον. Γέγονε δὲ τοιοῦτος εἰς ἡμᾶς ὁ τῶν ὅλων Ποιητὴς καὶ Κύριος, πραότητα μὲν τὴν εἰς ἄκρον ἔχων, τρυγόνος δὲ δίκην κατα κηλήσας τὴν ὑπ' οὐρανὸν καὶ τῆς ἑαυτοῦ καλλιφω νίας τὸν ἴδιον ἀμπελῶνα πληρῶν, τουτέστιν ἡμᾶς τοὺς πιστεύσαντας εἰς αὐτόν. Γέγραπται γοῦν ἐν τῷ Ἄσματι τῶν ᾀσμάτων, ὅτι "Φωνὴ τῆς τρυγόνος ἠκούσθη ἐν τῇ γῇ ἡμῶν· αἱ ἄμπελοι κυπρίζουσι·" λελάληκε γὰρ πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὸ θεῖόν τε καὶ εὐαγγελικὸν κήρυγμα, τὸ παντὸς τοῦ κόσμου σωτήριον, ὁ Χριστός. Ἐσφάζετο μὲν οὖν τρυγὼν καὶ περιστερὰ, ἵνα πάλιν αὐτὸς ὡς διὰ τύπων ἡμῖν σημαίνηται, τὸν ὑπὲρ τῆς κόσμου ζωῆς ὑπομένων θάνατον κατὰ σάρκα.
