mindful of the divine hypostases, he has declared with equal honor: "And now the Lord has sent me, and his Spirit." Whence Moses is often found praising: "The Lord God who goes before your face." And giving thanks they sang a hymn in this manner: "To him who led his people through the wilderness, for his 39.632 mercy endures forever." But also God the Father, showing that there is nothing different in substance, and power, and will, and glory between himself and the only-begotten Word, and his one holy Spirit, says through almost all of Scripture: "I brought you up from the land of Egypt. You are witnesses, if there was a strange God among you, except me." And he who is of the same nature and same mind with the most high Father and with his holy Spirit, our gentle .......
CHAP. X. ........................... against my Spirit, or concerning my Spirit.
And I think that, sparing them for this reason alone, he commanded them to come to Job, so that he might pray for them; clearly on account of the words that tended toward him, because they, incomprehensibly and very fittingly, I know not from where, said: "The divine Spirit is that which made me, and the breath of the Almighty is that which teaches me;" and in a short saying recounted great power, and the creative and evil-averting nature. Did Elihu, then, stop here in his theology? And yet he expressly added many things concerning the almighty God the Father, to which nothing must be opposed. For he said: "For he is eternal who is above mortals;" and again: "If there are a thousand death-bearing angels, not one of them will wound any of them, if he conceives in his heart to turn to the Lord;" and again: "He will pray to the Lord, and it will be acceptable to him;" and again: "Save my soul, that it may not go out to corruption; and my life will see light. Behold, the Mighty One does all these things." Therefore his words, concerning God and his Spirit, are good; but in other things, they are in error. Since indeed Job also, having named the Holy Spirit divine, as was said before, received such great praise from God. Consider, then, that even if you do not accept the testimony of Elihu, even so the 39.633 sacred heralds who called the Holy Spirit divine are sufficient; and even one of them testifying is worthy of belief; and that often the demon, wishing to deceive, mixes with the lie, as bait, some truth known to the one to whom his word is addressed. Indeed, in the Gospel we hear of the devil discoursing from the divine Scriptures with the Master of all, and weaving the holy writings with his unholy reasonings and words, and saying temptingly: "If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down; for it is written, That he will command his angels concerning you, to guard you;" and further, even of the demons theologizing better than the Arians, who ordained your heresiarch Macedonius, and after him Marathonius: "What have we to do with you, Jesus, Son of the living God? Have you come here before the time to torment us?" And James, showing that faith without works is dead, and the opposite, and that the one works with the other, and from both comes perfection, openly proclaims: "You believe that God is one? You do well; even the demons believe, and shudder." But not only this, but also the Samaritan woman, having been reproached for what she said at the beginning by Christ who wishes all to be saved. spoke the second time faithfully, and not as a Samaritan; and was deemed worthy of both praise and mercy. And perhaps many other such things might be found by those who labor more diligently on these matters. Do you see then, O Macedonian, that you do not even believe concerning the Holy Spirit as Elihu does; but every sober thought concerning him has flowed away from you; and because of the diminution which you work concerning his divine substance, and your not being a perfect partaker of his grace,
