a child, the sources of milk she may not be able to provide for him abundantly; but nevertheless, even having a breast in want, she offers it, and he, taking it, draws and strains, and warming the chilled nipple with his mouth, calls forth more nourishment than is there; and the mother feels pain when her breasts are strained, but she does not push the child away; for she is a mother, and would gladly suffer anything rather than grieve the one she bore.

If, therefore, mothers are so affectionate toward their offspring, it is much more necessary for us to be so disposed toward your love. For the birth pangs of the Spirit are warmer than those of nature. So that even if our table is full of great poverty, not even so shall we hide it, but bringing forth all that is from us, we will set it before you. And if these things are small and of little worth, nevertheless we provide them. Since that man who was entrusted with the talent was not accused because he did not bring five talents, but because he even buried the one which he received, for this reason he was punished.

For that which is sought by God and men is not to set down few or many things, but to bring a contribution in no way less than one’s existing ability. You heard formerly, when we were counted worthy to discourse to your love, as they were reading that psalm, which, having cast the sinner out from the sacred precincts, exhorted angels and the powers above to praise the God of all.

Do you wish, then, today also that we should hear this mystical melody, standing somewhere near there? To me, at least, it seems so. For if defiled men, setting up choruses in the marketplace, in deep darkness and the unseasonable hours of the night, singing pornographic songs and broken melodies, stir up our entire city and draw it to themselves; shall we not run together with the heavenly peoples, with the choirs above who sing hymns to the king of this universe, shall we not hear that divine and blessed voice? And what pardon could there be for us? And how is it possible to hear? he says. By ascending to heaven itself, if it is possible, if not with the body, then with the mind; if not in presence, then in thought.

For the body, being earthy and heavy, is by nature meant to remain below; but the soul has been freed from this necessity, and boldly flies to the highest and most distant places. And if it should wish to go to the very ends of the inhabited world and to ascend into heaven, there is nothing to prevent it; so light are the wings of reasoning that God has given it. And not only has He given light wings, but He also has granted eyes that see much more sharply than the body’s. For the sight of the body, if it is carried through the empty air, proceeds for a great distance; but if it should strike against a small body, just like a flowing stream that is checked, it turns back again; but the eyes of the soul, even if they should find walls, or ramparts, or the masses of mountains, or the very vaults of the heavens meeting them, will easily pass by them all.

But nevertheless, though the soul possesses such speed and sharp-sightedness, it is not sufficient in and of itself for the comprehension of heavenly things, but it needs one who will lead it by the hand. Let us do, then, what those who desire to see the royal courts do. What then do they do? Having sought out the one entrusted with the keys of the doors, they approach him and converse and supplicate, and often they even pay down silver, so that he might grant them the favor.

Let us, then, also approach one of those who have been entrusted with the heavenly gates, and let us converse, let us supplicate, let us show forth good will and a sincere disposition instead of silver. And if he should receive this payment, taking us by the hand, he will lead us about everywhere, showing us not the palace itself, but the king himself seated, with the armies present, and the chief captains standing by, of the myriads of

παῖδα τὰς τοῦ γάλακτος πηγὰς μὴ δύνηται ἀφθόνως παρασχεῖν αὐτῷ· ἀλλ' ὅμως καὶ ἐνδεῶς ἔχουσα τὸν μαστὸν ἐπιδίδωσιν, ὁ δὲ λαβὼν ἕλκει καὶ κατατείνει, καὶ τῷ στόματι κατεψυγμένην θερμαίνων τὴν θήλην, πλείω τῆς οὔσης ἐκκαλεῖται τὴν τροφήν· ἡ δὲ μήτηρ ἀλγεῖ μὲν κατατεινομένων αὐτῆς τῶν μαζῶν, οὐκ ἀπωθεῖται δὲ τὸ παιδίον· μήτηρ γάρ ἐστιν, καὶ πάντα ἂν ἥδοιτο παθοῦσα μᾶλλον ἢ λυπῆσαι τὸ τεχθέν. Εἰ οὖν μητέρες περὶ τὰ ἔγγονα οὕτως εἰσὶ φιλόστοργοι, πολλῷ μᾶλλον ἡμᾶς περὶ τὴν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην οὕτω διακεῖσθαι χρή. Τῶν γὰρ τῆς φύσεως θερμότεραι αἱ τοῦ Πνεύματος ὠδῖνές εἰσιν. Ὥστε εἰ καὶ πολλῆς ἡμῖν πενίας ἡ τράπεζα γέμει, οὐδὲ οὕτως αὐτὴν ἀποκρύψομεν, ἀλλὰ πάντα εἰς μέσον τὰ παρ' ἡμῶν φέροντες καταθήσομεν ὑμῖν. Εἰ δὲ μικρὰ ταῦτα καὶ εὐτελῆ, ἀλλ' ὅμως παρέχομεν. Ἐπεὶ κἀκεῖνος ὁ τὸ τάλαντον ἐμπιστευθείς, οὐχ ὅτι μὴ πέντε προσήνεγκε τάλαντα, διὰ τοῦτο ἐνεκαλεῖτο, ἀλλ' ὅτι καὶ τὸ ἓν κατέχωσεν, ὅπερ ἔλαβεν, διὰ τοῦτο δίκην ἔδωκεν. Τὸ γὰρ ζητούμενον παρὰ Θεῷ καὶ ἀνθρώποις, οὐκ ὀλίγα ἢ πολλὰ καταθεῖναι, ἀλλὰ μηδαμοῦ τῆς ὑπαρχούσης δυνάμεως ἐλάττω τὴν εἰσφορὰν ἐνεγκεῖν. Ἠκούσατε πρώην, ὅτε πρὸς τὴν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην διαλεχθῆναι κατηξιώθημεν, τὸν ψαλμὸν ἐκεῖνον ἀναγινωσκόντων, ὃς τὸν ἁμαρτωλὸν τῶν ἱερῶν περιβόλων ἐκβαλών, ἀγγέλοις καὶ ταῖς ἄνω δυνάμεσιν εὐφημεῖν παρεκελεύετο τὸν τῶν ὅλων Θεόν. Βούλεσθε οὖν καὶ σήμερον αὐτοῦ τοῦ μυστικοῦ μέλους ἀκούσωμεν, ἐγγύς που παραστάντες ἐκεῖ; Ἐμοί γε δοκεῖ. Εἰ γὰρ ἄνθρωποι μιαροὶ χοροὺς ἱστάντες ἐπὶ τῆς ἀγορᾶς, ἐν σκότει βαθεῖ καὶ ἀωρίᾳ τῶν νυκτῶν πορνικὰ ᾄσματα καὶ κατακεκλασμένα ᾄδοντες μέλη, πᾶσαν ἀναπτε ροῦσι τὴν πόλιν ἡμῶν, καὶ πρὸς ἑαυτοὺς ἐπιστρέφουσιν· ἡμεῖς τῶν ἐπουρανίων δήμων, τῶν ἄνω χορῶν τὸν βασιλέα τοῦδε τοῦ παντὸς ἀνυμνούντων οὐ συνδραμούμεθα, οὐκ ἀκουσόμεθα τῆς θείας ἐκείνης καὶ μακαρίας φωνῆς; Καὶ τίς ἂν ἡμῖν γένοιτο συγγνώμη; Καὶ πῶς ἔστιν ἀκοῦσαι; φησίν. Εἰς αὐτὸν ἀνελθόντας τὸν οὐρανὸν, εἰ δυνατόν, εἰ καὶ μὴ τῷ σώματι, ἀλλὰ τῷ φρονήματι· εἰ καὶ μὴ τῇ παρουσίᾳ, ἀλλὰ τῇ διανοίᾳ. Τὸ μὲν γὰρ σῶμα, γεῶδες ὂν καὶ βαρύ, κάτω πέφυκε μένειν· ἡ δὲ ψυχὴ τῆς ἀνάγκης ταύτης ἀπήλλακται, καὶ τοῖς ὑψηλοτάτοις καὶ τοῖς πορρωτάτοις χωρίοις θρασέως ἐφίπταται. Κἂν εἰς αὐτὰς θελήσῃ τῆς οἰκουμένης τὰς ἐσχατιὰς ἐλθεῖν καὶ εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν ἀναβῆναι, τὸ κωλῦον οὐδέν· οὕτως αὐτῇ κοῦφα τὰ πτερὰ τοῦ λογισμοῦ δέδωκεν ὁ Θεός. Οὐ πτερὰ δὲ κοῦφα δέδωκε μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὀφθαλμοὺς ἐχαρίσατο πολλῷ τοῦ σώματος ὀξύτερον βλέποντας. Ἡ μὲν γὰρ τοῦ σώματος ὄψις, ἂν μὲν διὰ κενοῦ φέρηται τοῦ ἀέρος, μέχρι πολλοῦ τοῦ διαστήματος πρόεισιν· ἂν δὲ μικρῷ προσπταίσῃ σώματι, καθάπερ ῥεῦμα φερόμενον ἀναχαιτισθέν, εἰς τοὐπίσω πάλιν ἀποστρέφεται· οἱ δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς ὀφθαλμοί, κἂν τοίχους, κἂν τείχη, κἂν ὁρῶν μεγέθη, κἂν αὐτὰ τῶν οὐρανῶν εὕρωσιν αὐτοῖς ἀπαντῶντα τὰ καμαρώματα, πάντα παραδραμοῦνται ῥᾳδίως. Ἀλλ' ὅμως οὕτω καὶ ταχυτῆτος καὶ ὀξυωπίας ἔχουσα ἡ ψυχή, οὐκ ἔστιν αὐτάρκης πρὸς τὴν τῶν οὐρανίων κατανόησιν αὐτὴ καθ' ἑαυτήν, ἀλλὰ τοῦ χειραγωγήσοντος αὐτὴν δεῖται. Ποιήσωμεν οὖν ὅπερ οἱ τὰς βασιλικὰς αὐλὰς ἐπιθυμοῦντες ἰδεῖν ποιοῦσιν. Τί δαὶ ἐκεῖνοι ποιοῦσιν; Ζητήσαντες τὸν τὰ κλεῖθρα τῶν θυρῶν ἐγκεχειρισμένον, ἐκείνῳ προσέρχονται καὶ διαλέγονται καὶ ἱκετεύουσιν, πολλάκις δὲ καὶ ἀργύριον καταβάλλουσιν, ὥστε δοῦναι αὐτοῖς τὴν χάριν. Προσέλθωμεν οὖν καὶ ἡμεῖς ἑνί τινι τῶν τὰς πύλας ἐπιτετραμμένων τὰς οὐρανίους, καὶ διαλεχθῶμεν, ἱκετεύσωμεν, ἀντ' ἀργυρίου προαίρεσιν ἐπιδειξώμεθα καὶ διάθεσιν εἰλικρινῆ. Κἂν τοῦτον ἐκεῖνος λάβῃ τὸν μισθόν, τῆς χειρὸς ἡμᾶς λαβόμενος, πανταχοῦ περιηγήσεται, οὐκ αὐτὰ δεικνὺς τὰ βασίλεια, ἀλλ' αὐτὸν καθήμενον τὸν βασιλέα, τῶν στρατευμάτων παρόντων, καὶ τῶν ἀρχιστρατήγων παρεστώτων, τῶν μυριάδων τῶν
