A ruler shall not fail, he says, from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he comes for whom it is reserved. And when Jacob died, Joseph mourned him, and having brought him up, buried him in the cave of Abraham. Therefore 56.325 his brothers said: Lest he bear a grudge, and repay us for the evils which we showed him. and they besought him, saying: Behold, we are your servants. And Joseph wept, and said to them: Do not be afraid; for I am of God. You planned evil things, but God has repaid me with good things. I will nourish you and your households. So Joseph lived one hundred years, and saw Ephraim's children to the third generation. He says therefore to his brothers: God will surely visit you, and will bring you into the land of the promise, which he swore to our fathers to give to them. And you will carry up my bones with you. And having died at one hundred years old, he was placed in a coffin in Egypt.
Synopsis of Exodus. A king having arisen in Egypt, who did not know Joseph,
afflicted the Israelites with clay and brick-making. And he also commanded the midwives to kill the males of the Israelites; but since they did not comply, he entrusted the bold deed to the people. Then Moses is born of the tribe of Levi, and his parents put him out in an ark. And the daughter of Pharaoh, having come down, and taken up the child, gave him to be nursed. So Moses, having become great, went out to the sons of Israel. And having observed their labor, he sees an Egyptian striking a certain Hebrew. And looking this way and that, he sees no one; and having struck the Egyptian, he hid him in the sand. And going out on the second day, he sees two Hebrews quarreling, and says to one: Why do you strike your neighbor? But he said: Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? Do you want to kill me as you did the Egyptian yesterday? Moses therefore was afraid; and Pharaoh heard the matter, and sought to kill Moses. And Moses, being afraid, departed to Midian; he helped the daughters of Jethro to water their flocks. And they reported to their father what had happened, and they brought Moses to him. And he gives him his daughter as a wife; and she bore to Moses Gershom and Eliezer. And while he was shepherding, God speaks to him; when he came, he saw the miracle at the bush, that it was burning, and was not consumed. And He sends him to Egypt, saying: Say, "I am who I am." And he is commanded to gather the senate, and thus to go in to Pharaoh, and to command the people, when they depart, to ask for articles of silver and gold from their neighbors. And He gives him such signs in order to be believed: the staff, which became a serpent; the alteration of his hand, for it became like snow, and again was restored to its own color; the water of the river. For you shall pour some of it, he says, upon the dry land, and it will be blood. But Moses was refusing; then God, being angry, joined Aaron with him. Moses announced to his father-in-law Jethro that he was about to go away to Egypt. And after the king who was seeking his life had died, God says to him that, Go into Egypt. And he, having taken the children and his wife, thus went in. Wherefore also an angel appears, frightening 56.326 him. For it was not on account of the circumcision (for if it were on account of the circumcision, the angel should not have stood against him before, until the mother had also circumcised the other one), but for his not taking his wife into Egypt. For he was not sent to dwell there, but to lead out Israel; which he himself, having understood, sends his wife away. And from where is it clear that he sent her away? His father-in-law Jethro meets him with his wife after he had gone out of Egypt. Aaron comes to Moses, and both gathered the senate of Israel, and they announced to them the things from God; and they rejoiced. But when they also went in to Pharaoh, and commanded him to send the people out, not only did the king not yield, but he also afflicted the Israelites more, having commanded that straw not be given to them, but that they provide it for themselves. And when the scribes were flogged for not
