Of Isaiah. I consider the greatest of services, to provide a daily life that is orderly and temperate.
Socrat. the wind kindles the fire, but custom kindles love. Alexandr. Having taken captive the daughters of Darius, when
his friends advised him to have intercourse with them, since they were beautiful; "It is shameful," he said, "for men who have conquered, to be defeated by women."
The same man, having gone to the Illyrians, at the altar of Zeus saw a woman of surpassing beauty, and being astounded at her good form, he gazed at her for a long time; and when Hephaestion said that it was fitting to take her as a lover, he said, "And how is it not terrible, if we who wish to punish the lack of self-control of others, should be caught by outsiders serving our own lack of self-control?"
Of Cleitarchus. Loving what you ought not, you will not love what you ought. For desire is insatiable,
for this reason it is also without resource. Diogenes. He used to say it was a terrible thing, that while athletes and cithara players control their belly and
pleasures, the former for the sake of their voice, the latter, for their body; yet for the sake of temperance, no one will despise them.
744 Demonact. Some rule over cities, but are slaves to women. Antiphont. But whoever of shameful things, or of evil things, has neither desired, nor
touched, is not temperate; for there is nothing over which he has gained mastery, to present himself as orderly.
Of Epictetus. No one is free, who is not master of himself. Of Pythagoras. The strength of a soul free from passion, is temperance. For this is of a soul free from passion
the light. 15Ε_042 To serve the passions is harder than to serve tyrants. A free man
it is impossible to be, who serves the passions, and is mastered by the passions. Of Sophocles. To live shamefully is a shameful thing for those who are nobly born. Demosth. It is necessary for one who is of sound mind, to always reason stronger than desires
to try to make. Demetrius. Demetrius of Phalerum, said the refined among the young men, in the
houses ought to revere their parents; on the road, those they meet; and in desolate places, themselves.
Menedemus. Menedemus, when a certain young man said, "It is a great thing to obtain what
one might desire," said: "It is a much greater thing to desire none of the things one ought not." Bias. Bias of Priene, said: "Blessed is the one who is rich, and what he desires
enjoys; but the one who desires nothing, is more blessed."

συνεβούλευον αὐτῷ οἱ φίλοι, εὐειδέσιν οὔσαις αὐταῖς συγγενέσθαι· Αἰσχρόν, ἐφη, ἐστίν, ἄνδρας νικήσαντας, ὑπό γυναικῶν ἡττηθῆναι.

Κλειτάρχου. Φιλῶν ἅ μή δεῖ, οὐ φιλήσεις ἅ δεῖ. Ἀπλήρωτον γάρ ἡ ἐπιθυμία,
διά τοῦτο καί ἄπορον. ∆ιογένης. ∆εινόν ἔλεγεν, εἰ οἱ μέν ἀθληταί καί οἱ κιθαρῳδοί, γαστρός καί
ἡδονῶν κρατοῦσιν, οἱ μέν τῆς φωνῆς χάριν· οἱ δέ, τοῦ σώματος· σωφροσύνης δέ ἕνεκα, οὐδείς τούτων καταφρονήσει.
744 ∆ημώνακτ. Ἔνιοι πόλεων μέν δεσπόζουσι, γυναιξί δέ δουλεύουσι. Ἀντιφῶντ. Ὅστις δέ τῶν αἰσχρῶν, ἤ τῶν κακῶν, μήτε ἐπεθύμησε, μήτε
ἥψατο, οὐκ ἔστι σώφρων· οὐ γάρ ἔσθ᾿ ὅτου κρατήσας, αὐτός ἑαυτόν κόσμιον παρέχεται.
Ἐπικτήτου. Οὐδείς ἐλεύθερος, ἑαυτοῦ μή κρατῶν. Πυθαγόρου. Ῥώμη ψυχῆς ἀπαθοῦς, σωφροσύνη. Αὕτη γάρ ψυχῆς ἀπαθοῦς
φῶς ἐστιν. 15Ε_042 ∆ουλεύειν παθεσι χαλεπώτεερον ἤ τυράννοις. Ἐλεύθερον
ἀδύνατον εἶναι τόν πάθεσι δουλεύοντα, καί ὑπό παθῶν κρατούμενον. Σοφοκλέους. Ζῇν αἰσχρόν αἰσχρῶς τοῖς καλῶς πεφυκόσι. ∆ημοσθ. ∆εῖ τον εὖ φρονοῦντα, τόν λογισμόν ἀεί τῶν ἐπιθυμιῶν κρείττω
πειρᾶσθαι ποιεῖν. ∆ημήτριος. ∆ημήτριος ὁ Φαληρεύς, τούς ἀστείους εἶπε τῶν νέων, ἐν μέν ταῖς
οἰκίαις τούς γονεῖς δεῖνα ἰδεῖσθαι· ἐν δέ τῇ ὁδῷ, τούς ἀπαντῶντας· ἐν δέ ταῖς ἐρημίαις, ἑαυτούς.
Μενέδημος. Μενέδημος, νεανίσκου τινός εἰπόντος, Μέγα ἐστί τό τυχεῖν ὧν
ἄν τις ἐπιθυμῇ, εἶπεν· Πολλῷ μεῖζόν ἐστι τό μηδέν ἐπιθυμεῖν ὧν μή δεῖ. Βίας. Βίας ὁ Πριηνεύς, εἶπε· Μακάριός ἐστιν ὁ πλουτῶν, καί ὧν ἐπιθυμεῖ
ἀπολαύων· ὁ δέ μή ἐπιθυμῶν, μακαριώτερος.
