Since it was winter, the crowds were gathering in the portico, among whom was Christ. 1 Jo 10, 24 The unbelievers, being refuted by the facts and having a doubtful mind, asked as if in doubt. 121Jo 10, 25 Knowing that from speaking many times He was not believed, He brings forth His works as being stronger for proof than His words; for they should have believed His words on account of their divine character and the practiced virtue of His life. But since they rejected these through an excess of ignorance, they ought at least to have accepted the testimony from His works. 122 Jo 10, 26 But these were alienated from the flock on account of their own wickedness, not having been willing to accept His divine teaching. 123 Jo 10, 27 He says that the appropriation of His own sheep has come about through obedience, just as from the opposite, alienation. 124Jo 10, 28 To those who follow through obedience He gives eternal life and He promises security for the future. 125Jo 10, 29 Since the Father has given all things into the hands of the Only-begotten, the Father also adds His own protection for the security of the sheep; for the end of the care of both is one. 126 Jo 10, 30 126 He says that He and the Father are one in essence, not in hypostasis, and that in all things He is equal to the Father; for He numbered two in hypostasis, Himself and the Father, by which He especially said "we are." 127Jo 10, 31-32 Seeing them greatly angered, reminding them of what He had done, He sought through kindness to bring them to a sense of His good deed and to stop their anger against Him. 128Jo 10, 33 By what they say, they accept the works as having been well done, but on account of the words they were indignant, thinking it blasphemy that He who raised the dead and healed the blind said He was the Son of God. 129 Jo 10, 34-36 If the Israelites were called gods, although they were not holy men, just for being Israelites, do you insult the one who shows by works that "I am God," and who does not boast in mere words alone? For even if I did not show this by works, but only said it, you ought not to be indignant, since the Law also calls men gods; but I also have the testimony of my works. Therefore those who say that I blaspheme by calling myself the Son of God are openly impious. 130 Jo 10, 37-38 Gently the Lord answers, saying, "If, while naming God as Father, I did not do works like the Father's, by which I showed that I am the Son of God, you would have," He says, "your case against us. But now, even if you do not believe me when I speak, at least be convinced by the works, that the Father is in me and I am in the Father." 131 Jo 10, 39 He shows that it was in His power to be seized; for behold, while being in their midst, He did not permit them to seize Him, although they wished to do this. 132 Jo 10, 40 For this reason He came to this place, that by means of the place He might remind the people of the words of John, which he spoke concerning Him, and by doing this He helped many. 133Jo 10, 41-42 And remembering the words of John, which he spoke concerning Him, that He was the bridegroom and the lamb who takes away the sin of the world and whatever else, they necessarily believed in Him.
