for himself a holy people. 14.7a The prophet therefore says: “I am the Lord your God, I have called you in righteousness and I will take hold of your hand and I will strengthen you, and I have given you for a covenant of a race, for a light to the nations, to open the eyes of the blind and to lead out from bonds those who are fettered and from the house of imprisonment those sitting in darkness.” Know therefore from where we were redeemed. 14.8 Again the prophet says: “Behold, I have set you for a light to the nations, to be for salvation to the end of the earth; thus says the Lord, the God who redeemed you.” 14.9 And again the prophet says: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for which reason he has anointed me to preach good tidings of grace to the lowly, he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim release to the captives and sight to the blind, to call the acceptable year of the Lord and the day of recompense, to comfort all who mourn.”

15.1 Furthermore, then, also concerning the Sabbath, it is written in the ten words, in which he spoke on Mount Sinai to Moses face to face: “And sanctify the Sabbath of the Lord with clean hands and a pure heart. ” 15.2 And in another place he says: “If my sons keep the Sabbath, then I will place my mercy upon them. ” 15.3 He speaks of the “Sabbath” in the beginning of creation: “And God made in six days the works of his hands, and he finished on the seventh day and rested on it and sanctified it. ” 15.4a Pay attention, children, to what “he finished in six days” means. This means that in six thousand years the Lord will finish all things; for a day with him signifies a thousand years. And he himself bears witness to me, saying: “Behold, a day of the Lord shall be as a thousand years. ” Therefore, children, “in six days,” that is, in six thousand years, all things will be finished. 15.5a “And he rested on the seventh day. ” This means: when his son comes, he will abolish the time of the lawless one and will judge the ungodly and will change the sun and the moon and the stars, then he will rest well on the seventh day. 15.6a Finally he says: “You shall sanctify it with clean hands and a pure heart. ” If, therefore, anyone now is able to sanctify the day which God sanctified, being pure in heart, we have been deceived in all things. 15.7a But if not now, then he will sanctify it at that time when he rests well, when we ourselves will be able, having been justified and having received the promise, with lawlessness no longer existing, but with all things having been made new by the Lord— then we will be able to sanctify it, having been sanctified ourselves first. 15.8a Finally he says to them: “Your new moons and sabbaths I cannot bear.” See how he says: “Not the present sabbaths are acceptable to me, but that which I have made, in which, having brought all things to an end, I will make a beginning of an eighth day, which is a beginning of another world. ” 15.9 Therefore we also celebrate the eighth day with gladness, on which Jesus also rose from the dead and, having been made manifest, ascended into heaven.

16.1 And furthermore, concerning the temple, I will tell you how the wretched ones, being deceived, hoped in the building, and not in their God who made them, as if it were the house of God. 16.2a For they consecrated him in the temple almost like the nations. But how does the Lord speak, abolishing it? Learn: “Who has measured the heaven with a span or who the earth with a handful? Was it not I, says the Lord? The heaven is my throne, and the earth is the footstool of my feet. What kind of house will you build for me, or what is the place of my rest?” You have known that their hope is vain. 16.3 Finally he says again: “Behold, those who destroyed this temple will themselves build it. ” 16.4a It is happening—for because they went to war it was destroyed by the enemies; now even the servants of the enemies themselves will rebuild it. 16.5a Again, it was revealed that the city and the temple and the people of Israel were about to be handed over. For the scripture says: “And it will be in the last days, and the Lord will hand over the sheep of the pasture and their fold and their tower to destruction. ” And it happened according to what the Lord spoke. 16.6a

ἑαυτῷ λαὸν ἅγιον. 14.7a Λέγει οὖν ὁ προφήτης· «Ἐγὼ κύριος ὁ θεός σου ἐκάλεσά σε ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ κρατήσω τῆς χειρός σου καὶ ἰσχύσω σε, καὶ ἔδωκά σε εἰς διαθήκην γένους, εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν, ἀνοῖξαι ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλῶν καὶ ἐξαγαγεῖν ἐκ δεσμῶν πεπεδη μένους καὶ ἐξ οἴκου φυλακῆς καθημένους ἐν σκότει.» Γινώσκετε οὖν πόθεν ἐλυτρώθημεν. 14.8 Πάλιν ὁ προφήτης λέγει· «Ἰδού, τέθεικά σε εἰς φῶς ἐθνῶν, τοῦ εἶναι εἰς σωτη ρίαν ἕως ἐσχάτου τῆς γῆς· οὕτως λέγει κύριος ὁ λυτρωσάμενός σε θεός.» 14.9 Καὶ πάλιν ὁ προφήτης λέγει· «Πνεῦμα κυρίου ἐπ' ἐμέ, οὗ εἵνεκεν ἔχρισέν με εὐαγγελίσασθαι ταπεινοῖς χάριν, ἀπέσταλκέν με ἰάσασθαι τοὺς συντετριμμένους τὴν καρδίαν, κηρύξαι αἰχμαλώτοις ἄφεσιν καὶ τυφλοῖς ἀνάβλεψιν, καλέσαι ἐνιαυτὸν κυρίου δεκτὸν καὶ ἡμέραν ἀνταποδόσεως, παρακαλέ σαι πάντας τοὺς πενθοῦντας.»

15.1 Ἔτι οὖν καὶ περὶ τοῦ σαββάτου, γέγραπται ἐν τοῖς δέκα λόγοις, ἐν οἷς ἐλάλησεν ἐν τῷ ὄρει Σινᾶ πρὸς Μωϋσῆν κατὰ πρόσωπον· «Καὶ ἁγιάσατε τὸ σάββατον κυρίου χερσὶν καθαραῖς καὶ καρδίᾳ καθαρᾷ. » 15.2 Καὶ ἐν ἑτέρῳ λέγει· «Ἐὰν φυλάξωσιν οἱ υἱοί μου τὸ σάββατον, τότε ἐπιθήσω τὸ ἔλεός μου ἐπ' αὐτούς. » 15.3 Τὸ «σάββατον» λέγει ἐν ἀρχῇ τῆς κτίσεως· «Καὶ ἐποίησεν ὁ θεὸς ἐν ἓξ ἡμέραις τὰ ἔργα τῶν χειρῶν αὐτοῦ, καὶ συνετέλεσεν ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ καὶ κατέπαυσεν ἐν αὐτῇ καὶ ἡγίασεν αὐτήν. » 15.4a Προσέχετε, τέκνα, τί λέγει τὸ «συνετέλεσεν ἐν ἓξ ἡμέραις. » Τοῦτο λέγει, ὅτι ἐν ἑξακισχιλίοις ἔτεσιν συντελέσει κύριος τὰ σύμπαντα· ἡ γὰρ ἡμέρα παρ' αὐτῷ σημαίνει χίλια ἔτη. Αὐτὸς δέ μοι μαρτυρεῖ λέγων· «Ἰδού, ἡμέρα κυρίου ἔσται ὡς χίλια ἔτη. » Οὐκοῦν, τέκνα, «ἐν ἓξ ἡμέραις», ἐν τοῖς ἑξακισχιλίοις ἔτεσιν, συντελεσθήσεται τὰ σύμπαντα. 15.5a «Καὶ κατέ παυσεν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ. » Τοῦτο λέγει· ὅταν ἐλθὼν ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ καταργήσει τὸν καιρὸν τοῦ ἀνόμου καὶ κρινεῖ τοὺς ἀσεβεῖς καὶ ἀλλάξει τὸν ἥλιον καὶ τὴν σελήνην καὶ τοὺς ἀστέρας, τότε καλῶς καταπαύσεται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ἑβδόμῃ. 15.6a Πέρας γέ τοι λέγει· «Ἁγιάσεις αὐτὴν χερσὶν καθαραῖς καὶ καρδίᾳ καθαρᾷ. » Εἰ οὖν ἣν ὁ θεὸς ἡμέραν ἡγίασεν νῦν τις δύναται ἁγιάσαι καθαρὸς ὢν τῇ καρδίᾳ, ἐν πᾶσιν πεπλανήμεθα. 15.7a Εἰ δὲ οὐ νῦν, ἄρα τότε καλῶς κατα παυόμενος ἁγιάσει αὐτήν, ὅτε δυνησόμεθα αὐτοὶ δικαιωθέντες καὶ ἀπολαβόντες τὴν ἐπαγγελίαν, μηκέτι οὔσης τῆς ἀνομίας, καινῶν δὲ γεγονότων πάντων ὑπὸ κυρίου- τότε δυνη σόμεθα αὐτὴν ἁγιάσαι, αὐτοὶ ἁγιασθέντες πρῶτον. 15.8a Πέρας γέ τοι λέγει αὐτοῖς· «Τὰς νεομηνίας ὑμῶν καὶ τὰ σάββατα οὐκ ἀνέχομαι.» Ὁρᾶτε πῶς λέγει· «Οὐ τὰ νῦν σάββατα ἐμοὶ δεκτά, ἀλλὰ ὃ πεποίηκα, ἐν ᾧ κατα παύσας τὰ πάντα ἀρχὴν ἡμέρας ὀγδόης ποιήσω, ὅ ἐστιν ἄλλου κόσμου ἀρχήν. » 15.9 ∆ιὸ καὶ ἄγομεν τὴν ἡμέραν τὴν ὀγδόην εἰς εὐφροσύνην, ἐν ᾗ καὶ ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἀνέστη ἐκ νεκρῶν καὶ φανερωθεὶς ἀνέβη εἰς οὐρανούς.

16.1 Ἔτι δὲ καὶ περὶ τοῦ ναοῦ, ἐρῶ ὑμῖν πῶς πλανώ μενοι οἱ ταλαίπωροι εἰς τὴν οἰκοδομὴν ἤλπισαν, καὶ οὐκ ἐπὶ τὸν θεὸν αὐτῶν τὸν ποιήσαντα αὐτούς, ὡς ὄντα οἶκον θεοῦ. 16.2a Σχεδὸν γὰρ ὡς τὰ ἔθνη ἀφιέρωσαν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ναῷ. Ἀλλὰ πῶς λέγει κύριος καταργῶν αὐτόν; μάθετε· «Τίς ἐμέτρησεν τὸν οὐρανὸν σπιθαμῇ ἢ τίς τὴν γῆν δρακί; οὐκ ἐγώ, λέγει κύριος; Ὁ οὐρανός μοι θρόνος, ἡ δὲ γῆ ὑποπόδιον τῶν ποδῶν μου· ποῖον οἶκον οἰκοδομήσετέ μοι, ἢ τίς τόπος τῆς καταπαύσεώς μου;» Ἐγνώκατε, ὅτι ματαία ἡ ἐλπὶς αὐτῶν. 16.3 Πέρας γέ τοι πάλιν λέγει· «Ἰδού, οἱ καθελόντες τὸν ναὸν τοῦτον αὐτοὶ αὐτὸν οἰκοδομήσουσιν. » 16.4a Γίνεται -διὰ γὰρ τὸ πολεμεῖν αὐτοὺς καθῃρέθη ὑπὸ τῶν ἐχθρῶν· νῦν καὶ αὐτοὶ οἱ τῶν ἐχθρῶν ὑπηρέται ἀνοικοδομήσουσιν αὐτόν. 16.5a Πάλιν ὡς ἔμελλεν ἡ πόλις καὶ ὁ ναὸς καὶ ὁ λαὸς Ἰσραὴλ παραδίδοσθαι, ἐφανερώθη. Λέγει γὰρ ἡ γραφή· «Καὶ ἔσται ἐπ' ἐσχάτων τῶν ἡμερῶν, καὶ παραδώσει κύριος τὰ πρόβατα τῆς νομῆς καὶ τὴν μάνδραν καὶ τὸν πύργον αὐτῶν εἰς καταφθοράν. » Καὶ ἐγένετο καθ' ἃ ἐλάλησεν κύριος. 16.6a
