as David also confesses this, for he says, “out of the depths I have cried to you, O Lord,” and with infinite greatness and not meagerly and cheaply, just as those 12.7 of the Arian heresy and all the external ones do. And since the law was given through Moses, the heresies that split off after it, before the incarnate coming of Christ, are eleven, and after the incarnate coming, another sixty. apart from those before the law, and of all these, five, and of the other four Hellenic heresies, which before the law are nine; and all together with their own mothers number eighty. 12.8 Of which the mothers are five, as follows: Barbarism, Scythianism, Hellenism, Judaism, Samaritanism. From these, from Hellenism, four heresies: of the Pythagoreans, Platonists, Stoics, Epi12.9cureans. and from the law, before the incarnate coming of Christ, eleven: from the Jews, seven: of the Scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, Ossaeans, Nasaraeans, Hemerobaptists, Herodians; and from the Samaritans, four: of the Gorothenes, Sebuaeans, Essenes, Dositheans; altogether eleven that have sprung from the law, from the Jews and Samaritans. 13.1 All, therefore, before the incarnate coming of Christ, beginning from Adam and up to it, are twenty. And after the incarnate coming of Christ, until the reign of Valentinian and Valens and Gratian, all the heresies that falsely claimed the name of Christ for themselves are sixty, numbered as follows: 13.2 Simonians, Menandrians, Saturnilians, Basilidians, Nicolaitans, Gnostics, who are also Stratiotici and Phibionites, by some called Secundianites, by others Socratites, by others still Zacchaeans, 13.3 and by some called Coddians, and Borborites, and Barbelians, Carpocratians, Cerinthians (who are also Merinthians), Nazoraeans, Ebionites, Valentinians, Secundians, with whom are associated Epiphanes and 13.4 Isidore, Ptolemaeans, Marcosians, Colorbasians, Heracleonites, Ophites, Cainites, Sethians, Archontics, Cerdonians, Marcionites, 13.5 Lucianists, Apellians, Severians, Tatians, Encratites, Cataphrygians (who are also Montanists and Tascodrugites), Pepuzians (who are also Priscillianists and Quintillianists), with whom are associated the Artotyrites, Tessareskaidekatites (who celebrate Passover on one day of the year), Alogi (who do not accept the Gospel and the Apocalypse of John), Adamites, Sampsaeans (who are also Elkesaites), Theodotians, Melchizedekians, Bardesianists, Noetians, Valesians, Cathars (who are also Novatians, and are also called Montenses, as they are called in Rome), Angelics, Apostolics, 13.6 (who are also Apotactites), Sabellians, Origenists (who are also the shameful doers), the Origenists of Adamantius, that of Paul of Samosata, Manichaeans (who are also Acuanites), Hieracites, Melitians (who are a schism 13.7 in Egypt), Arians (who are also Ariomanites), the schism of the Audians (but not a heresy), Photinians, Marcellians, Semi-Arians, Pneumato13.8machoi (who blaspheme the Holy Spirit of God), Aerians, Aetians (who are also Anomoeans), with whom is associated Eunomius (or rather, the lawless one), Dimoerites (who do not confess the complete incarnation of Christ, who are also Apollinarians), and those who say that the holy Mary the ever-virgin, after she had given birth to the Savior, was joined to Joseph, whom we have called Antidicomarianites, and those who offer a colluris cake in her name, who are called Collyridians, Messalians, with whom are associated the Martyrians (who are from the Hellenes) and Euphemites and Satanians. 14.1 And simply, I have grown weary and I am growing weary of bringing the names of so many heresies to the count and of recounting their lawless deeds 14.2 and still of the two
