of the Ishmaelites, now called Saracens. And Isaac begets two sons, Esau and Jacob, and at that time the race of the God-fearing was called Abramites and Isaacites. But Esau, having been assigned to Idumaea, a country situated to the south and east of Canaan, becomes the founder of Mount Seir and builds the city Edom, which is called Rokom and Petra. And sons are born to him, and they rule in Idumaea, each in succession, who were also called the rulers of Edom. from whom Job was the fifth in succession, if Abraham is removed from this number, but counting from Isaac: for Isaac begets Esau, Esau begets Reuel, Reuel begets 1.181 Zerah, Zerah begets Job, formerly called Jobab but later called Job, a little before the temptation that happened to him. And circumcision was practiced. But Jacob flees from the face of his brother Esau because of his wrath, by the counsel of his father and mother, to Mesopotamia, Paddan, beyond Mesopotamia, Suba; who takes from there four wives in number from his own kindred, and they bear him twelve sons, who were also called patriarchs. And as he was returning to the land of Canaan to his own father Isaac and mother Rebecca, a certain vision from God came to him by the outlets of the Jordan, but they call the torrent Jabbok, where he saw camps of angels. “And behold,” it says, “a man from the west and wrestled with him until dawn,” whom the scripture indicated was an angel; who by way of blessing gives to Jacob the name of honor, Israel. And rising from there, Jacob named the name of the place 'form of God.' And since the one who said to him through the blessing, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel it shall be called,” * also made the distinction, saying that “you have prevailed with God and with men you will be powerful,” from this time they are called Israelites. 2. And Israel, after the descent of Joseph into Egypt, goes down himself also with his whole house of sons and descendants, of the aforementioned women and others, seventy souls in number. And the race of Israel spends five generations in the land of the Egyptians. For Jacob begets Levi and Judah and the other ten patriarchs. Levi begets Kohath, Judah begets Perez; Kohath begets Amram, Amram begets Moses; Perez begets Hezron, Hezron begets Ram, Ram begets 1.182 Amminadab, Amminadab begets Nahshon. In the times of Moses and Nahshon, in the fifth generation according to Levi, Israel goes out from Egypt through the Red Sea with divine signs and encamps in the desert of Sinai. And when oracles were given from God to his servant Moses to number the men from twenty years up to fifty who were able to draw a sword and take up weapons of war, he found them to be six hundred twenty-eight thousand, five hundred. And at that time Inachus was known among the Greeks, whose daughter was Io, who was also called Atthis, on account of whom is present-day Attica; from whom also is the Bosphorus, of which a city, Bosphorus, is named, which is in the Euxine Sea; and the Egyptians call her Isis, whom they also worship as a goddess. And a river is also homonymous with him, being so called Inachus. From there the mysteries and rites among the Greeks had their origin, having been badly devised previously among the Egyptians and among the Phrygians and Phoenicians and Babylonians, but having been transferred to the Greeks from the land of the Egyptians by Cadmus and by Inachus himself, who was previously called Apis and built Memphis, but also having taken their beginning from Orpheus and certain others and having been organized into schools later in Epicurus and Zeno the Stoic and
