the work to be fulfilled, they met with Pharaoh, and availed nothing. Therefore they cried out against Moses; and again he is sent to the Israelites, proclaiming the good news of their exodus. But they did not listen to Moses because of their faint-heartedness. Here Moses is genealogized, and God says to him: I have made you a god to Pharaoh; and he sends him to Pharaoh, having commanded him to show a sign, if the king should ask, that of the rod turned into a serpent. And when the rod became a serpent, and he did not yield, the water of the river is turned into blood, the land is filled with frogs; then gnats came, then the dog-fly, then the death of the cattle, then the boils, then the hail and the fire, then the locust, and the darkness that could be felt. And when the death of the firstborn was about to be brought on, they are commanded to sacrifice a male sheep, without blemish, and to anoint the doorposts with the blood; for those in the house where the blood of the lamb was [l. ᾖ] would not be destroyed. Then also he lays down the law for them of the seven days of unleavened bread; and if they should enter the land of promise, he commands them to keep the service. And if your sons ask you, he says, you shall say: This Passover is a sacrifice to the Lord. And when in the middle of the night the firstborn of the Egyptians perished, they drove the Israelites out of Egypt. And they went out, having taken the silver and gold vessels, and a great mixed multitude with them, and sheep, and oxen, and cattle. Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, which they and their fathers dwelt in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, was four hundred and thirty years. And God said: Dedicate and sanctify to me every firstborn from man to beast, because he killed the firstborn of the Egyptians. But he did not lead them by way of the Philistines, lest they repent when they see war, and return to Egypt, but by way of the Red Sea. And in the fifth generation the children of Israel went up out of Egypt; and Moses took the bones of Joseph. And God led Israel by a pillar of fire by night, and by a pillar of cloud by day. And when Pharaoh, having repented, pursued them, Moses struck the sea with his rod, and it was divided; and after the Israelites had passed through, it came together against the Egyptians, and drowned them. And Moses sang the song, and Miriam also sang with the women. They came to Marah, where the water was bitter, and Moses sweetened it by means of the wood. They came where there were twelve springs and seventy palm trees; and the place was called Elim. They came from there into the wilderness between Elim and Sinai. Then 56.327 the Israelites grumbled in the wilderness, seeking meat. Then he rained manna for them. Then he brought the quail. Here, concerning the manna, about which he who gathered much had no surplus, and he who gathered little had no lack, he commanded that none be left until the morning. But they disobeyed, and what was left became full of worms. He said: Do not go out to gather on the Sabbath; but they disobeyed in this also, and going out they found none. Moses commands that some of the manna be placed in a golden jar for the generations to come. And they ate the manna for forty years. Then they grumbled because of thirst. And Moses struck the rock, and water came out. Amalek comes to make war on Israel; and Joshua the son of Nun turned him back; and as long as the hands of Moses were raised up, Israel prevailed, but when he let them down, they were defeated. And this was a type of the cross. For Aaron and Hur stood, supporting the hands of Moses. And the Lord said to Moses: Write this for a memorial in a book. Jethro the father-in-law of Moses comes with the wife to meet both Moses and the people (but Scripture improperly calls him son-in-law). Moses recounts the wonders to his father-in-law; and he was amazed. And when he saw all the people standing by Moses, and that he was not sufficient to judge them all, his father-in-law says to him: Choose able men, God-fearing, just, hating arrogance, and appoint them rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, rulers of tens. Moses did so, and went up to the mountain. And

Καὶ
