Canaanites, whom Jesus the robber drove out.» 13 Cod. 1630: And in the times of Jesus, Ogyges reigned over Attica, who perished with his country when a flood occurred, and from that time Attica remained desolate and uninhabited for 206 years, as Africanus wrote. (3) And at that time Hades reigned over the country of the Molossians, who had a daughter, a maiden, that is, a beautiful one, Persephone. And when Peirithous was in love with her, her father, knowing this, placed the dog which he had before the door of the bedchamber and called it Tricerberus because of its size; and (who?) when Peirithous came by arrangement, it killed him, and also the maiden who came out to help him. And this is what is said poetically, that Pluto seized her, according to Palaephatus. (3) And the kingdom of Sicyon, that is, of Greece, lasted 85 years. (4) In these times were known Prometheus for grammar*, Epimetheus for music, and Atlas for astronomy; for which reason they say that he holds up the heaven; and Argus the all-seeing, renowned for technical skill. (5) And the kingdom of Attica was also established in Athens, and it lasted 402 years. And Cecrops was the first to reign, who was called 'of two natures' on account of the size of his body. He made a law that women should be given to one man, whereas before they had mingled like beasts. And he did this as one who came from Egypt, not being ignorant of the legislation of Hephaestus; and he said that it was because of such wickedness of licentiousness that Attica was flooded. (6) After him reigned Cranaus, Phoroneus and their successors down to Codrus. From that time the kingdom of the Athenians changed to an aristocracy, and the first was Draco the lawgiver, then Solon, after him Thales, next Aeschylus and others. And it all lasted 82 years. (7) At that time Orpheus also was known, having become a most excellent wise man and having been taught many mysteries. There are also extant discourses of his concerning the knowledge of God, in which he said that the highest light created all things, which he named Counsel, Light, Life; he declared these three names to be one power and one might of the God who is creator of all. 14 Suidas: Orpheus. That in the time of the Judges among the Jews, when the kingdom of the Athenians had been dissolved, Orpheus was known, having become a most excellent wise man and having been taught many mysteries. For there are extant discourses of his concerning the knowledge of God, from which are the following. For he said that from the beginning the aether was revealed, having been created by God; and on this side and that of the aether was chaos, and dreadful night held all things and covered the things under the aether; signifying that night came first; having said that a certain incomprehensible and highest of all, and pre-existent, and creator of all things, the highest aether itself, exists. And he said the earth was invisible. And he said that the light, having burst through the aether, illuminated the earth and all creation; speaking of that light, the highest of all, the unapproachable, which contains all things; which he named Counsel, Light, Life. He declared these three names to be one power and one might of the God who is creator of all, who brought all things from non-being into being, both visible and invisible. And concerning the race of men he said, that it too was fashioned by the creator of all and God, and it received a rational soul, following the writings of Moses; and having said that the race of men is wretched and subject to many sufferings both of soul and of body, and receptive of both good and evil works, and miserably disposed with regard to living. 15 Codex 1630: In the same times Marsyas became a flute-player, and the events concerning Jason and the Argonauts took place, who, having landed at Cyzicus and after being hosted, through ignorance engaged in battle and killed Cyzicus the king, and having mourned, they built a temple in his memory, and departing from there to the so-called Pythian hot springs and having sacrificed they asked Apollo whose was the temple which they themselves had built. And an oracle was given to them containing the following: «An ignorant maiden will be with child; for he who proceeds from her, having taken the whole world captive, will bring it to his father
