Seeking the donkeys, he came to Samuel; and Samuel spoke to Saul about the kingdom and about what he sought. Saul, having gone out, told his relative and friend the other things, but about the kingdom he did not report, showing that one must not trust friends nor relatives in great matters on account of the readiness of men to envy. This Saul, with Samuel strengthening him, reigned for twenty years; and Samuel prophesied and at the same time served as priest during his reign. And Abner, the son of Ner, was his general of the army. And when Saul offended God, Samuel again anointed as king David the son of Jesse, from the tribe of Judah. And Samuel died, preceding Saul by two years, and David reigned for seven years while Saul was still living, and for 33 after his death. During his reign Abiathar, the son of Abimelech, from the lineage of Eli, wa31s high priest, and Zadok from another family line; and David himself prophesied, as well as Gad and Nathan and Asaph and Idithum; and Joab was his general. It is necessary, therefore, to include in the total number 40 years for Saul, and 40 also for David, because, as has been said, he had reigned for seven years while Saul was still living. For the marriage of Michal, they say Saul had demanded not one hundred foreskins but six hundred heads of the foreigners and had received them from David. During his reign, Joab the commander of the army numbered the tribes of Israel, and the number which he counted was one hundred thousand and six hundred two, and the sons of Judah four hundred and seventy [thousand]; but he did not count Levi and Benjamin. And on account of this, seventy thousand of the people fell. They say that David composed innumerable odes and hymns to God with many musical instruments. But also that much gold was buried with David by Solomon; which the kings of the Hebrews from time to time, opening it during sieges, took, many talents worth of money. But no one laid hands on the coffins of the kings; for they had been engineered by Solomon so that they could not be found. Solomon, son of David, having succeeded his father, reigned for 40 years. He, having laid the foundation of the temple of God in the fourth year of his reign, and having construc32ted it in seven years, dedicated it in the eleventh year of his rule. And during his reign Zadok was priest, and Nathan prophesied, who had encouraged him to build the temple, and Ahijah the Shilonite and Shemaiah son of Salami and Iddo; and Benaiah son of Jehoiada was entrusted with the military force. To him was born from such a multitude of wives only one son, Rehoboam. He has set down many works in writing, but he also devised incantations and exorcisms against demons, which some Jews use: having a certain ring with a seal and a root from those which Solomon indicated, they place it at the nose of the sufferer, and the demon, smelling it, is drawn out, a sign being set, either a cup full of water or some other vessel, which the fleeing demon would shatter completely. During these times Homer and Hesiod were becoming known. Rehoboam son of Solomon reigned for 18 years. During his reign the entire multitude of the people was divided; and the tribe of Judah and that of Benjamin remained with him, but all the remaining ten tribes appointed Jeroboam the son of Nabat, from the tribe of Ephraim, one of Solomon's own people, as their king. So the royal house for Rehoboam was in Jerusalem, and the multitude ranked under him was called Judah and the house of David, having taken its name from the more dominant tribe. And for Jeroboam, Samaria was the 33 metropolis, and the royal house was in Tirzah, and two altars, one in Bethel (for he set up one of the heifers there), and the other in Samaria in the tribe of Dan; for there too he consecrated another heifer. And the name for the people under him was Israel on account of their number and Ephraim on account of the king's tribe. And Shemaiah the son of Salami still prophesied at that time, and the one from Judah who came to Samaria and prophesied to Jeroboam concerning the
