nor do they combine their thought passionately with them, even if it is simply pleased. How then and why will he mourn, who has detested the entire world and in the disposition of his thought has distanced himself from it more than he draws near to it with his body? He who has no desire for any of the visible things, over what then (35) will he be grieved or rejoice, and how will he mourn for the kingdom of heaven, while delighting in it every day, since He said that those who mourn receive comfort? But pay attention, I beseech you, to what is being said, and you will know the knowledge and the meaning of what is said.
The faithful man, who always pays attention to the commandments of God with precision, when he has done all the things of the divine commandments and has delved with his own mind into their height, that is, into the blameless life and purity, then, examining his own measure, he will find himself weak and not strong enough to arrive at that height of the commandments, but also exceedingly poor, that is, unworthy for the reception of God and for thanksgiving and glory, as having not yet possessed any good of his own; and he who considers these things for himself in the perception of his soul will surely mourn a mourning that is truly most blessed, which also receives comfort and renders the soul meek.
For the comfort that comes from mourning is a pledge of the kingdom of heaven. For faith is the substance of things hoped for, according to the apostle, but comfort is the visitation of God that comes from the illumination of the Spirit in mourning souls, awarding them humility, which is also called a seed and a talent; for, growing and multiplying in the souls of those who struggle, thirtyfold and sixtyfold and a hundredfold, it bears for God the holy fruit of the gifts of the Spirit. For where there is true humility, there is also a depth of humility; and where (36) there is humility, there are also illuminations of the Spirit. And where there are illuminations of the Spirit, there is an outpouring of God's light and God in wisdom and knowledge of His mysteries. And where these things are, there is the kingdom of heaven and the knowledge of the kingdom and the hidden treasures of the knowledge of God, in which is also the manifestation of spiritual poverty. And where there is a sense of spiritual poverty, there is also joyful mourning, there are also the ever-flowing tears, which purify the soul that loves these things and render it perfectly most radiant.
Therefore, through these things, the soul, being renewed and recognizing its own Master, begins diligently to bear the other virtues as fruit for itself and for Christ. And reasonably so. For being ever watered and fattened by tears and completely extinguishing its own anger, it becomes entirely meek and unmoved toward wrath, and it desires and yearns, hungering and thirsting together, to learn the judgments of God. And in these things it also becomes merciful and compassionate, so that from all these things its heart is rendered pure and it comes to be in the vision of God and to see His glory clearly, as is the promise. Those, therefore, who have acquired such souls for themselves are peacemakers in truth and are named sons of the Most High, who purely both recognize their own Father and Master and love Him with their whole soul, that is, enduring every labor and every affliction for His sake, being insulted, reviled, distressed for the sake of His righteous commandment which He also enjoined (37) us to keep, and being reproached and persecuted and enduring with joy every evil word spoken falsely against them for the sake of His name, exulting that they were counted worthy to be dishonored by men for the sake of His love.
Learn well, brothers, the true impression of the seal of Christ. Recognize, O faithful, the properties of the character. One seal truly the illumination is
