enemy: Having pursued I will overtake; and again by another: I will take the whole world in my hand, as a nest, and I will take it up as abandoned eggs. And in general they attempt to boast such things, and they promise these things, so that they may deceive the God-fearing. But it is not right for us, the faithful, again to fear his phantasms, and to pay attention to his words. For he lies, and speaks nothing true at all. Assuredly, speaking such and so many things and being insolent, like a dragon he was drawn by the hook by the Savior, and like a beast he received a halter around his nostrils, and like a runaway slave he is bound by a ring in his nostrils, and his lips are pierced with a bracelet. And he is bound by the Lord like a sparrow, to be mocked by us; and he and the demons with him have been placed, like scorpions and snakes, to be trampled upon by us Christians. And a sign of this is that we now live our lives against him. For he who promised to wipe out the sea and to seize the world, behold now he is not able to hinder your ascetic practice, nor even me speaking against him. Therefore let us not pay attention to what he may say (for he lies), nor let us be afraid of his phantasms, which are also false. For the light appearing in them is not true light; but rather they bring the preludes and images of the fire prepared for them; and in those things in which they are about to be burned, in these they try to frighten men. Assuredly they appear, and straightway they disappear again; having harmed none of the faithful, but bringing 26.881 with them the likeness of the fire that is to receive them. Wherefore it is not fitting to fear them thus; for all their practices, through the grace of Christ, are for nothing. For they are crafty and ready to change and transform themselves into anything. For often they even pretend to chant with a song, without being seen, and they recall words from the Scriptures; and sometimes when we are reading, immediately like an echo they themselves often say the same things that have been read; and they wake us when we are sleeping for prayers; and they do this continually, almost not permitting us even to sleep. And sometimes, also imprinting themselves into the forms of monks, they pretend to speak as pious men, so that by a like form they may lead astray, and then drag where they wish those who have been deceived by them. But one must not pay attention to them, even if they rouse us to prayer, even if they advise us not to eat at all, even if they pretend to accuse and reproach us for those things in which they once agreed with us. For they do not do these things for piety or truth, but so that they may bring the innocent to despair, and say asceticism is useless, and make men feel loathing, as if the solitary life were oppressive and very burdensome, and to hinder those who live against them. The prophet therefore, sent from the Lord, pronounced such men wretched, saying: Woe to him who gives his neighbor a turbid ruin to drink. For such practices and thoughts are subversive of the way that leads to virtue. But the Lord Himself of Himself, although the demons spoke the truth (for they said truly: You are the Son of God), nevertheless muzzled them, and forbade them to speak, lest at some time with the truth they should also sow their own evil, and so that He might accustom us also never to pay attention to such, even if they seem to speak the truth; for it is also improper, when we have the Holy Scriptures and the freedom from the Savior, to be taught by the devil, who did not keep his own rank, but thought other things instead of others. For this reason also He forbids this one from speaking words from the Scriptures, saying: But to the
