CHAPTER 139. By night, the demons ask to disturb the spiritual teacher by themselves. And by day, through men, they surround him with circumstances, and slanders, and dangers. 79.1197

CHAPTER 140. Do not refuse the fullers; for even if they beat you while trampling, and card you while stretching, yet through these things your perception becomes bright.

CHAPTER 141. As long as you have not renounced the passions, but your mind opposes virtue and truth, you will not find fragrant incense in your bosom.

CHAPTER 142. Do you long to pray? Having departed from things here, have your citizenship always in the heavens, not in simple, bare words, but in angelic action and in more divine knowledge.

CHAPTER 143. If you remember the Judge only when you are in trouble, as one who is fearsome and incorruptible, you have not yet learned to serve the Lord in fear, and to rejoice in him with trembling. For know that even in spiritual respites and feasts, one must rather worship him with piety and reverence.

CHAPTER 144. A discerning man, who before complete repentance does not put aside the sorrowful memory of his own sins, and of the judgment in eternal fire, the penalty for them.

CHAPTER 145. He who is caught up in sins and provocations, and shamelessly dares to reach for knowledge of more divine things, or even to embark upon immaterial prayer, let this one receive the apostolic censure, that it is not without danger for him to pray with head bare and uncovered. “For such a one,” he says, “ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels who are present,” being clothed in fitting reverence and humility.

CHAPTER 146. Just as the incomprehensible and intense sight of the sun at steady noon and in its most powerful blaze will not help one with sore eyes, so also the representation of the fearsome and supernatural prayer in spirit and in truth will in no way help the passionate and impure mind, but on the contrary, it even rouses the Divine to indignation against itself.

CHAPTER 147. If the one who lacks nothing and is incorruptible did not receive the one who came with a gift to the altar until he was reconciled with the neighbor who was grieved with him, consider how much guarding and discernment is needed, that we might offer acceptable incense to God on the spiritual altar. 79.1200

CHAPTER 148. Do not be fond of words, nor fond of glory, otherwise, the sinners will work not on your back, but on your face, and you will be a cause of rejoicing for them at the time of prayer, being drawn out and enticed by them with strange thoughts.

CHAPTER 149. Attention seeking prayer will find prayer; for prayer follows attention, and it is for this that one must strive above all else.

CHAPTER 150. Just as sight is better than all the senses, so also prayer is more divine than all the virtues.

CHAPTER 151. The praise of prayer is not simply its quantity, but its quality, and this is shown by those who went up to the temple, and by the text, “When you pray, do not babble,” and what follows.

CHAPTER 152. As long as you pay attention to the proportion of the body, and your mind attends to the pleasant things of the tent, you have not yet seen the place of prayer; but the blessed way to it is far from you.

ΡΛΘʹ.
