and His death and resurrection and the faith which is through Him, in which I desire to be justified through your prayer. The priests are good, but the High Priest is better, who is entrusted with the holy of holies, who alone is entrusted with the secret things of God; being Himself the door of the Father, through which enter Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and the prophets and the apostles and the Church. All these things are for the unity of God. But the Gospel has something special: the coming of the Savior, our Lord Jesus Christ, His passion and resurrection. For the beloved prophets announced Him; but the Gospel is the completion of incorruption. All things together are good, if you believe in love. Since according to your prayer and according to the compassion which you have in Christ Jesus, it has been reported to me that the church in Antioch of Syria is at peace, it is fitting for you, as a church of God, to appoint a deacon to go there as an ambassador of God, to rejoice with them when they are gathered together and to glorify the Name. Blessed in Jesus Christ is he who shall be counted worthy of such a ministry, and you will be glorified. If you are willing, it is not impossible for you to do this for the name of God, just as the neighboring churches have sent bishops, and others presbyters and deacons.Concerning Philo the deacon from Cilicia, a man of good report, who now also ministers to me in the word of God, together with Rheus Agathopus, a chosen man, who is following me from Syria, having bid farewell to this life; they also bear witness to you, and I thank God for you, that you received them, as the Lord also received you. But may those who dishonored them be redeemed by the grace of Jesus Christ.
The love of the brothers in Troas greets you, from where I also write to you by Burrhus, who was sent with me by the Ephesians and Smyrnaeans as a mark of honor. The Lord Jesus Christ will honor them, in whom they hope in flesh, soul, spirit, faith, love, concord. Farewell in Christ Jesus, our common hope.
IGNATIUS TO THE SMYRNAEANS
Ignatius, also called Theophorus, to the church of God the Father and of the beloved Jesus Christ, which has been mercifully blessed with every spiritual gift, being filled with faith and love, lacking in no spiritual gift, most worthy of God and bearer of saints, which is in Smyrna of Asia, in a blameless spirit and in the word of God, very many greetings. I glorify Jesus Christ, the God who has made you so wise; for I have understood that you are established in an immovable faith, as if nailed to the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ in both flesh and spirit, and firmly established in love by the blood of Christ, being fully persuaded concerning our Lord, that He is truly of the lineage of "David according to the flesh," the Son of God according to the will and power of God, truly born of a virgin, baptized by John, that "all righteousness might be fulfilled by Him"; truly crucified for us in the flesh under Pontius Pilate and Herod the tetrarch—from which fruit we are, from His divinely blessed passion—that He might "raise a standard" for the ages through the resurrection for His saints and faithful ones, whether among Jews or among Gentiles, in the one body of His church.
For He suffered all these things for us, that we might be saved; and He truly suffered, as He also truly raised Himself, not as some unbelievers say, that He only seemed to suffer, they themselves being only a seeming; and as they think, so shall it happen to them, being bodiless and demonic. For I know and believe that He was in the flesh even after the resurrection. And when He came to those with Peter, He said to them: "Take, handle me and see that I am not a bodiless demon." And immediately they touched Him and believed, being mingled with His flesh and with His spirit. For this reason also

ΣMΥΡNAIOIΣ IΓNATIOΣ
